Do it with two people. We did not use a heat gun, I have no idea how this would work. Remove all the screws, the black gills, the rubber gaskets, etc. Do the oven thing, put 'em in for 10 mins, take a couple of flathead screwdrivers with a towel or something over them so they don’t damage the warm soft plastic, and pry the bastards apart, focus on the areas with those little tabs that are holding them together, I just broke 'em all it doesn’t matter. After a few minutes of pulling them apart they will have cooled down and so you’ll have to stick 'em back in the oven again for five minutes or so.
Waats: did you put them in at 200 Celsius or something??? How the hell did that happen?!?
when putting them back together can you just stick both pieces in the oven again and then put them back together?
also- what temperature did you turn the oven on- just to be safe-
and is it possible to push down on the tabe enough for it to pop out- or is it necessary to break them- also why does it not matter whether or not they break?
Yep, you can stick both pieces back in the oven to re-heat the glue in order to put them back together. We did that, plus added a thin bead of silicone to ensure a air tight seal.
Oven Temp=between 210 F to 250 F MAX!! (I assume Watts was using Celcius)
You should be able to pop out the tabs without breaking them, but again, it’s not a big deal if they do break, the glue holds the lenses in, not the tabs.
When prying, also start on the end that is closest to the reverse light, it’s easier to begin up there (most of the glue is in that area, because that is where the deepest part of the lense is)’
hey guys, quick tip…ya don’t need a heat gun; and you sure as hell don’t need to put them in the oven…good lord:think: .
here is how you do it.
1)find your girlfriend
2)if you don’t have one, get one(use your own method)
3)gank her hair dryer
4)using the hole created in the rear of the light housing after you’ve removed it from the car, just point that hairdryer on high into the hole, oh, about 6 inches away. It will heat evenly from the inside…so no need to worry about trying to do laps with a heatgun; possibly cracking the housing.
5)walk away
6)come back in a few minutes and it WILL come apart easily.
7)pray your girlfriend doesn’t see you doing this, if so, plan on this project costing you about 40-50 bucks as you will have to apease her with dinner and a movie.
there is no need to risk melting your gear in an oven guys:shrug:
well this method is what I’ve heard from numerous people on honda, supra, and other forums- so its not stoopid to do it this way- but if hair dryer works then that sounds like a better way
If you have a heatgun handy use that … a hair dryer would take ALL DAY to do. I’ll admit it, I’ve messed up 2 tails doing it in the oven, but its because of certain things that have happened that I’ve learned from. I’d go Heatgun - Oven - Hair Dryer.
but you can use the hair dryer method with the heat gun too right? i know people say do laps around the edges, but that uniform hair dryer method sounds good, possibly even better with a heat gun.
Be carefull with a heat gun, I used a heat gun(the type that heats up monokote for r/c planes) and it got hot enough to melt the plastic on the stock fogs.
91integgs its a little late but all i did was take everything out of the lights all the little plastic things and chrome taped everything in the housing. they are prolly twice as bright as the stock tails with stock bulbs in them so they kinda have a function to.
I have a 90 Integra. The tail lights are clear on the top. I put a clear bulb in them so they blink white. The bottom of my tail lights are red on the outside. there’s no way to yank anything out. I took them off the car and looked inside - THEY’RE CLEAR INSIDE! The outside of my lights a the red plastic! My frind has a 91 teg and hers is the same way. You guys are sanding the outside of your lights??!?!?!??!
