Coating stock pistons

Hi all…So I’ve got enough money and a reasonable amount of job security at least through the summer so I’m going to rebuild my setup. I’m going to start with a new motor since the one I’m on now is just about cooked. I’m going to build the spare engine I have with stock parts. I have two concerns, however. One is cracking a sleeve. I’m going to keep it under 300hp, 250hp sounds like a nice round number, so as long as I keep the tunning safe I should be good with the sleeves. I’m also concerned about the pistons getting cooked. Has anyone tried using a coating like HP Coating on the stock pistons? I’m also considering using their coating on the new Inline Pro manifold I’m going to get. Anywho…comments and suggestions are welcome.

Planned upgrades include:
Rebuilt turbo
New Engine
P&P head with SS valves
HP coated Inline Pro manifold
Full Race crossmember
Moroso oil Pan
Rebuilt SS intercooler piping
TurboEdit (still have a PR4 laying about Chris?)

Got a few of them actually

I’ve never heard or read any convincing data that says coating the pistons strenghtens them or keeps them from failing anymore than an uncoated set.

I have seen some things about coating the rings though and having that help.

Are you going to at least shot peen some stock rods?

You should be good up to 250hp as long as you keep the timing conservative.

I woudl jsut stick with stock oil pan and use the money fro coating the pistosns to just get new pistons. Prolly come out to same price.

Ya I’m sick to death of dealing with leaking stock oil pans. No matter what I do it doesn’t want to stop leaking around where it’s tapped. So screw it, I’ll pay for the one with the welded in bungs for oil and oil temp.

Was thinking about shot peening the rods. I’ve got a couple sets of stock rods, think they’ll be ok to reuse?
