Cody's 1990 GS Hatch (Progress thread I guess?)

Hey everyone! New to the whole 2nd gen experience. Just bought this car a few days ago, alternator crapped out on the way home and now it sits for a little while. But anyway on to the car.

So some information! As the title states, 1990 GS Hatch, with leather 3 point steering wheel(which I’m told is rare?), OEM lip(Which I’m told is also rare?), B16 transmission, Progress CS II coilovers, 180,000kms, new front seats, some kind of short throw shifter and a few other things. I got it with three bins FULL of spare parts. Interior pieces, mud guards, flaps, control arms, distributors, fuel pump etc… The owner also gave me JDM one piece headlights, spare tails you get the idea.

Passed inspection with flying colors, minus the tires but the car has been sitting a while. About a year actually. Really well upkept and maintained.

QUESTION: Coilovers are brand new, the fronts, and rear right sit PERFECTLY! But the rear left sits way too high! I adjusted the ring to where its the exact same height as the other side but it still sits high! Then I lower the crap out of it and the spring then went into negative preload. So I backed it up until the spring sat on the ring again… STILL TOO HIGH. What could be causing this? They’re brand new!

Modifications:

Progress CS II Coilovers
Short throw shifter with energy suspension bushings (I’ll get the brand later)
NEUSPEED front strut brace
B16 transmission

Looks like a clean platform to start man. Im jealous of the oem optional lip.

So after a fairly expensive bill later, car is fixed. Now I just have to replace a transmission mount and get some new tires.

Then I went along and picked up a paint marker from a hobby shop. Can you see what I did?

And an engine bay shot.

And a few edited shots from when I first got the car.

How much did he charge you to replace the alternator? You have a G2 again, time to get some tools and start fixing things yourself. I do all my own work. I prefer to buy the manuals, tools and proper parts so that I know the work was done properly and to spec.

Welcome to the site! G2 aren’t hard to work on. I suggest what he said ΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔ. You’ll learn a lot about your car just by doing ,maintenance and repair! Good luck!

I do most of my own work or as much as I can at least. Its my daily and I need it for work. It would have taken me a day or two to replace the alternator and with the amount of work and hassle involved I didn’t want to mess around with it. I’m aware of the tedious process. Remove wheel and fender liner, drop lower control arm, remove axle, and the strut fork too I believe. Thats a nope for me. They charged me $300 for the work and rebuild.

Sometimes it just “pays to pay”. Looks clean!

i totally feel you man. I do most things that i can handle myself but if the payout isn’t too crazy i rather pay to get it done by a professional. Because with no garage and this Florida weather it’s a real PITA.

Yes, those summer afternoon 10 minute hurricanes do get annoying. After that comes the 105 degree 99.9 % humidity that makes you sweat soak your cloths. Very glad I have a garage. Tomorrow I will be chopping up a CRX that I bought for parts. My first time actually cutting up a car. The integra that I parted out got the chassis drug onto a flatbed tow truck.

Any ideas for the car at the moment besides work?

Well I need to get some tires, I want to get the wheels painted and I wouldnt mind having a dual exhaust tip. A transmission mount needs replacing first as well as something else I can’t remember. My vents are stuck on the defrost they wont do anything when I click on them. Id also love a paintjob too.

I tried to cover up some bondo and primer on the side of the car. Didn’t turn out so well.

Parking lot cellphone shot.

Alright now check out this ugly mess.

Time to mask that shit.

Alright yeah now time to paint that shit with an empty splotchy can of paint. (Didn’t know about this until I started.)

Pictures don’t do justice. It looks pretty crap.

Not appreciating the lack of paint this can of color matched paint had.

Its Canada day and everythings closed. I head to the basement to search for another black can of paint. This is where we start on the spoiler

WELP. The dupli color can looked HORRILE in its own way. Splotches everywhere and so much freaking orange peel. THEN THE HANDLE BREAKS.

NEVER buy one of these cans. I’ve always tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and they have always failed me one way or another.

Had to make due, wet sanded with 330grit sand paper. Looks bad sure but its a lot less worse than the amount of orange peel.

Done and clear coated. This is just until I can eventually get the car painted.

Will post pics of the car eventually my phone is dead.

Do you know what direction you want to go with your motor and trans

I would of left it alone.

Yeah well I figured it l would have came out a BIT better than that. shrugs

As for the engine and transmission. Already got a B16 transmission and Im quite happy with the engine. Maybe an OBD1 conversion down the line.

little advise when it comes to body work…

go overkill with supplies. nothing worse than not hving what you need or running out of it.

always good to have 300-3000 sandpaper on hand

also, never wet sand with anything under 1500 grit

I wanted to wetsand with a higher grit but it was all I had on hand due to everything being closed. Ran into a guy at the grocery store today I worked with him in the past. Said he’d spray my car for me with a gun and I wrote down his number. No reply yet, hope I wrote down the right one.

Update! Some things have happened. :’(

First, new wheels! DC US Integra wheels.

Then after the large amount of rainfall we’ve had I found out that I had a leak in my trunk due to a bad tail light gasket. :’( Hard to see but there’s water in the housing. So I took it out and threw on another stock tail light I had.

So I got a few days off and went on a 450km drive to my GFs place. On the way, I blew two coilover struts and got a large screw lodged in my tire. I was just driving down the highway and BANG. I pulled over PRAYING to god that maybe I destroyed my rim or blew out the side wall on my tire but nope. I damaged the coilover.

Coilovers now scare me. It was only a small bump on the highway but it blew out two of my coilover struts. Now I’m out another $350 though it’ll take some time for me to save up that much. Looks like I’ll be driving around with blown struts for a while. Progress(Company) won’t cover the damage. They’re brand new with not even 1000kms on them but they were put on the car and the car sat for a year so no warranty for me. :’(

Gas station pic, take note of the mismatched tail lights. Theres a method I read up on apparently you take out the tail light, dump bleach inside the housing and slush it around a bit and it turns out like the right tail light. (White) I’ll be doing that when I order in a new set of gaskets.

I took my old camera that I sold to my GF and took some shots, she took a few as well namely the ones that aren’t watermarked.

Notice how crooked the front end is? The car is a rebuild title. Frame was never straightened.

When I washed the car I had a bunch of water come in from the driver side rear window. LOVELY. At least its as easy as bringing it to a glass shop and getting them to reseal it. Also my gasket job I did with half a tube of silicone failed horribly. I made a small swimming pool in my trunk, so I went out and bought a full tube and went to town on the tail light. Hopefully it holds up until I can afford to order tail light gaskets.

Had some rain today, trunk was COVERED in water again. AGGH. How can I seal this damn tail light?!

Get a car cover as a temporary fix
Also try clear silicon sealant and put it in the inside and out side
