CTR Cams in GSR head or ITR Head?

Ok, so i recently got back my car, rebuilt B17 with P30 pistons, and new gaskets, pumps etc. I planned on going with some CTR camshafts, and a new valve train to complete the engine being “built” I was thinkin of how much its going to cost, and i noticed that it would be cheaper to buy a 15k mile complete cylinder head from a Type R “with cams” in running condition then it would be to… replace the valves, replace the valve train, switch to the CTR cams, etc on the stock B17 head. Just wondering what kindof difference this would be, As far as i know, the CTR cams are similar to the Type R except for “one” CTR cam being a little more agressive then the ITR cam, and the other cams are identical. Just wanted to know what people thought, if the extra money for 1 cam slightly better then the ITR cam, is worth all the extra money, when the Type R Head is complete, with everything needed and allready upgraded. Anyone? Thanks in Advance

You can run CTR cams on your stock valvetrain if you don’t exceed the OEM rev limit.

Well I’m sure you know the GSR’s rev to 8k, i remember you saying that you have this setup. Did you use your stock valve train? How long did you use it? I just seen some posts saying if you use the stock valve train (especially in a head with 160K on it) it will be a disaster. Shouldn’t u use a dual valve spring setup with those cams? For insurance purposes mainly>

P.S. I have about 450miles on the rebuild, it sounds like tapping from the palce where the IM meets the head. I’m pretty sure it’s not the valve clearance, cause it sounds different, a little louder, and not sa high pitched noise as valve clearance issues. But it’s not knocking, this i know for a fact, its more ticking. Got any ideas?

I don’t run the stock valvetrain on my car. I have the full Supertech kit in the head with bronze guides.

Long Live Project “1.5”

who do you know that runs the stock valve train? How much did you pay for the supertech kit, and the cams?

I have a stock dual spring top end in my b17

I know lots of people running stock valvetrain. As for the other thing, it was lots and lots of money. More than I wish to remember.

but then again, i’m out of power at a couple clicks over 7K… :hmm:

yeah that was a very jaw dropping breakdown you told me the other day!

schu you ever pick up on of the blocks that were for sale on HT.

I can not get anyone nailed down! if you can beleive it, at least three have come across HT, of course the one was new and out of the price range I was willing to pay, but the other seems to get scare awaywhen I start to ask questions. Maybe for the better, I don;t want someone elses problem block
Schu

PS… any quality built head is going to set you back over 2k at the min.

$2K… yeah :frowning:

no man… it’s 2K

thats 2/3 of what i payed for my car

I thought the B17 was NOT a stock dual valve spring setup? Therefore, people buy the ITR valvetrain…? Or are you saying its a dual valve springs from another car (stock)?

Have you ever pulled you valve cover? pull it and look

i did that and a whole bunch of gerbils ran out! now my car won’t start. :giggle:

 you better hope you can find all of them dude!

yeah i pulled my valve cover off plenty of times. But i never really looked in closely at the valve springs, i just took the head to a machine shop to have a valve job done. Why do people with B17 heads upgrade to the ITR valve train if the stock valve springs are dual anyway?

Well… they want BOTH intake and Exhaust valve springs that don’t bind at higher lift levels perhaps… also 5 years and 100k-150k milage is not really friendly to performance oriented engines
