Da9 Failed Smog

Okay so today i took my teggy to get smog so i can register it. And suck is that I failed! They told me that the motor is not burning all the gas out, motor is way too hot etc. So what could be the issue with this? um the car does have issue staying alive when first start, so i have to give it gas til it like warm up a bit then it idles normal. I have already clean the FITV, and iacv and swap to a different throttle body. Quick question does the FITV suppose to be screw in all the way, the internal stuff. If so then mine is not and i was not able to screw it in anymore, I attempted one and the plastic white part broke. So i attempt a second one and just screw it to where i can screw it anymore and i left it at that. Now as for the motor is way too hot, um I do have coolant in there, which i just put in today. The thing is the radiator hose, the top is warm/hot where you can grab still but the bottom hose is just like normal, not warm or anything and when you press it its like really firm. I have already bleed out the air already as well. Now i dont know why previous owner did this but they have like 2 fan switch wired to it, cause on 91 integra the fan switch is on the block, but then there is also one on the thermostat housing. So should i unconnect the one from the thermostat and change the original fan switch behind the block so it can maybe get correct readings? if someone can help me out here that be great and thanks in advance!! oh also the timing is off, it suppose to be at 16 but its reading 22, could this be a reason why its not burning up all the gas?

seem you have a few problems you should take a pic an post it of the smog read out. I would set the timing at 16 an your car is a 91? if so then it sounds like you have a 92/93 thermostat housing with the sensor on it

i sure will do that in a bit. yes the car is a 91, but previous owner have another fan switch re-wired to the thermostat housing, while the one on the block is still connect so like i stated there are two fan switch on it. So since my car is a 91 originally should i remove the one on the thermostat, i mean like no have wires to it etc. As for timing i know it suppose to be at 16, but thing is im not familiar and dont really know how to use the timing light gun, or like what to look for etc. SORRY newbie at timing

we all start some were I would first find out if both switches work (maybe one is broke an that why there are two because he wired another one up instead of fixing the problem…do you know any one that has or can show you how to use a timming light?

yeah i am gonna try that! I am gonna get a new fan switch and swap out the one that is originally suppose to go which is on the block. Now as for timing um no not really I don’t know anyone, i do kind of get the visual of how to do it but just not believing in myself on that. Hmm also for the overheating, you think it may be a bad water pump?

trust your self timming is not hard to do …over heating what does the temp gauge say?

Yeah I’ma try it out um on the gun turn knob to 16? And point gun from driver side down right? Um temp gauge does read normal tho like near middle but the smog guy said um it was overheating when he ran it on the thing with heat on too and two fans!

If your engine is running hot, lowering your ignition timing to 16 degrees or even to 14 degrees will help with that.

Ok sound good I’ll do so once this rain goes away. Lol

Definately set the timing and make sure the fan switch is working and the fan comes on. It is also possible the thermostat is sticking. Do you notice if you get heat in the car right away or not at all? For the idle at start up you can actually adjust the base idle when cold by turning that plastic piece in the FITV. Move it about half a turn at a time until it is close to what you want. Just make sure to keep the car cold because the idle will decrease as it warms up, and bleed the coolant any time you disconnect the coolant lines. You also said that you just put coolant in it. How low was the coolant? Post your smog results too.

here is the result of it, sorry not the best pic

what i see it says the timing is of is set at 16 if you cant get it at 16 your timing belt is off a tooth

your timing is way too advanced. 22btdc. that’s probably what they are talking about saying it’s running hot. the more you advance ignition timing, the higher the cylinder pressures will be. temperature rises concurrent to pressure. so you’ll be running high cylinder temps. this is where you get the high levels of NOx. retarding the timing will also bring down those HC levels.
set it at 16
btdc
i’m actually curious as to why it’s set so advanced in the first place. i have a sneaking suspicion that it’s going to be tough to keep it running at 16*. engine may be tired. though i’m probably reading too far into this. just set the timing to 16* and see what happens. if it doesn’t wanna stay running, try 18*

Okay so you guys say set the timing to the correct 16 first then it should be better result? Reason y it was set on 22 is not to set it on purpose. Actually bought the car non running and fixed it and we jus line up the marking on the cam n pulley, we haven’t use the timing light

yes. set it at 16*. even at 22, you’re not all that much past the max allowable. you should be good at 16. there’s gotta be at least 5 tutorials on this site alone on setting timing, so you should be golden there. make sure you drive the car for a good half hour before you hit the station. the longer the better. highway, if you can.
i’m just really surprised the engine wasn’t knocking all over the place with timing that far advanced. one of the reasons i figured the engine may be tired.
out of curiosity, what was wrong with it when you bought it?

Alrighty well do! Gotta go get a timing gun since kragen don’t rent them out n not sure about pepboys or autozone, haven’t check. Well the car timing was hella off like when it was set at tdc um the arrows on the cam gears were pointing down instead of up! I thought it was the fuel pump since didn’t hear it prime! So I did the fuel pump twice and yet nothing! Even got another fuel pump off some guy on criagslist, a universal one and installed it and nothing! I was getting spark n I can smell am getting fuel so I was like okay I got spark and fuel so that should be good! I didnt check timing at all cuz previous owner said they jus did timing and everything is correct so I took their words for it! Change all I could think of, plugs, wired, etc and yet nothing! So finally I checked timing, me being a newbie on timing I didn’t really know what to look for or how to check, so I did research online and look up forums on how to and all. That’s when I set it at TDc and saw that timing was not correct, fixed that and cranked it up and nothing either! This point I kinda thought motor was no good now but did more testing n tested the fuel, which turn out the newer fuel pump I put in was not pumping out much gas, so I swap back in the old one and from there that’s when the car came back alive!

quick question, when doing timing do i have to short it out first from that connector from the blower motor?

yes. should set base timing

Alrighty will do that tomorrow, just got a timing gun  the connector should be on passenger side behind kick panel?

yup. 90-91 is above kick panel
