disabled intake resonator

I wanted the deep growl that goes along with the removal of the intake resonator on my 91 integra but I am to lazy to go through all that work. So I took out the air box and taped up the resonator hole. I put it all back together with the paper filter that has 10,000 miles on it.

When I took off down the street I was surprised not to here the growl under wide open throttle but even more surprised that there was no additional noise at 5000 revs and above.

The cool part is there is a definite low to midrange power increase and I think a throttle response increase as well. I just did it today so I have to drive it a little more to make sure the throttle response isn’t just in my head.

I did this mod on a sohc non vtec civic and it sounded like a dohc above 5000 rpms but there was no power increase at all. I installed a short ram and got big gains but now it sounds like a weed whacker at high revs.

power increase is in your head. just because you hear more noise doesn’t mean your making more power. loud does not equal faster.

change your air filter with a new one, you’ll feel a smoother running car.

yeah the power increase could be in my noggin. What I said though, was that I was surprised disabling the resonator didn’t make more noise. The filter looked new so I didn’t replace it. I only mentioned the filter so someone wouldn’t ask if I felt the power increase due to changing out a dirty filter.

Wait wait wait, you didnt wanna go through the trouble of removing the intake resonator, but you did all of that?

I don’t think it was all that much work. I was already under the hood doing something. I just pulled out the three bolts holding the box in and sealed up the hole with black electrical tape and some plastic.

I probably would have run into some trouble with the bumper bolts/screws (whatever they are) due to the 13 years of road salt from these lovely New England winters. I also have some Catz driving lights I would have had to mess with.

Pulling down the fender housing panel isn’t much fun in the winter either. So I still maintain I did it the laziest way possible.

Today being the third day since my ghetto mod I did hear a difference in the intake tone but it was at wide-open-throttle at red-line. I don’t push the old teg that hard too often.

The reason it didn’t get very loud was because you still have the bottom half of your airbox attached still, correct?

So wait…you taped the hole on the bottom, the front, or both?

Yeah, just the bottom (the resonator hole).

Thats what I figured. It’s still pulling air in through that little cold air duct in front of the box. I read the Teg Tip about the bottom half removal but instead I’m gonna chop the bottom half of the air box in half so that I can still get a good seal with the clips.

You should just cut the resonator out and remove the bolts. If you don’t care about preserving the part, it’s really easy to remove. I kinda sorta broke mine when I took it out, it was a bitch, but would have been alot easier had I just tore it apart… and not turned the bolts the wrong way :tsk:

I think you cant hear the growl because you taped up the hole. I took out the whole resonator, and left both holes in the airbox open, so it still sucks air through the bottom of the box (where the resonator used to be) and the front of the box. The growl is definately noticeable and loud. Take out the resonator and dont tape up any of the holes.

A lot of the sound has to do with the open filter and the metal piping. When I switched from a 3"SRI to a 2.75"CAI, the car sounded way deeper at WOT.

Yeah, why would you bother with taping over the hole. It doensn’t increase airflow or anything. I removed the resonator, and also cut the bottom of the airbox hole larger. So it still bolts down, but just has a larger hole in the bottom to get more air. Also put in a K&N drop in. Better airflow, and stock appearance.

in a teg, the resonator is screwed in a way that is almost impossible to unscrew, unless you take off the bumper or something. when I was removing my entire intake to put in an AEM, i had to burn the plastic piece where the screw was. . i almost set my engine on fire. i had to put it out with my Fanta :uhoh:

I took my resonator off with no problem at all. Jack up the front right side of your teg (where the airbox is) and take off the plastic guard that goes inside the wheel well. Then there are 3 bolts to undo from the bottom I believe. Two of them are pretty easy to get to and the third takes a little work, but I just used a extension on the wrench and got it off pretty easily. Once these 3 bolts are out, just pull the resonator out through the bottom. I did this in about 10 min and it didn’t involve taking the bumper of at all.

well we were also working with a small amount of tools and the Spare tire jack.

we got it done, which is important

U set your car on fire?! What the hell… :tsk:

Wtf seriously guy it takes like 15 minutes to remove the bumper…

It was winter, and I’m lazy.

I wish I knew that before.
Anyway I finally got around to chopping the lower box in half. I clipped it back to the upper half and dropped it back in place. It sounds bad as hell, better than the CAI on my 92
