hey guys,
i havent posted much but i’ve been mostly doing research. -k- here’s the question. I just got a garret t3 turbo with an internal waste gate. I’ve been lookin for a downpipe flange for it. The T3 is a 5 bolt pattern but the internal waste gate has a exhaust with 3 bolts on it, which sits on top of the 5 bolt pattern. You guys still with me? Now where do i find a 3 bolt flange for the exhaust? Or will it be better/easier just to get rid of the internal wastegate?
Bolt to bolt the measurement is approx. ~3 inches apart and the diameter of the hole is ~2 inches.
Thanks for any input.
Your picture is too small.
IMHO shit-can the internal wastegate. other than that, ford mustang svo’s have that style DP flange since they use that tubo and the internal wastegate.
i run 11 psi on my IW, i gotta be close to 250 whp. They are more reiable than the External wastegates.
No other difference. The only reason people run EW’s are because their turbos dont have the IW.
EW’s look cool, but if that looks is worth the 200 for the wastegate and the 60 for the EW mod on the mani than go for it.
Just get a Boost Controller if you want to change boost
–that is the 3 bolt IV volvo/saab internal wastegate flange. U can pick them up on ebay for like 30$
thanks for the replies.
actully there is a large difference in running internal wastegates vs Externals…
first is the heat escape through the internal over time cracks the turbine housing
wastegate flapper often overheat carbon up and crack
external actuator failure isnt that uncommon which causes iradic boosting and could potentially damage car/turbo or cause u to go slow… hahaha
the biggest of many is the turbulence created by the exhaust gases leaving the turbine housing and the wastgate flapper bore at the same time decrease speed in which exhaust gasses escape the DP and causes a considerable amount of backpressure in turn decreasing performance…
this is not bullshit do not argue read up
IMO go with an external if your mani is made for one.
Can’t you just weld to it? like the pipe right onto that housing, cuz that housing comes off the turbo.
The only reason people run an external gate is because they don’t have an internal? That’s the greatest thing I’ve heard so far. :bang: :stfu:

thats probaly not to bad of an idea since it comes apart from the turbo that part would just act as your flange. also they make flanges that you can buy yourself if you really want to keep that style gate. i had the same turbo from a saab and personally i went with the external because of how old the turbo was (84) i diddnt want it to fail on me.
two things…shit can the internal gate because of everything R6e6i6d said, also your going to need to do something about the flange on your turbine section, where it mounts to the manifold…it wont sit right and will leak out of 2 half circle openings once its mounted…take it off and bring it to a machine shop and have them “plane” it level, only then will you be able to properly mount the turbo.
