My friend has a tsi on which the turbo was switched with an evo turbo (not sure on the turbo names), and my question is, is the turbo off his car a good idea for my stock b18a1? It’s got 130,000 miles, burns a little oil though, but has perfect compression… I’ve been thinking about chipping my ecu, getting the car tuned properly with crome or turboedit, and starting to piece together the kit for use with this turbo. I could probably get the turbo from him for about $100, it’s in great condition and has NO shaft play and doesn’t leak oil, etc. I’ve heard of people running stock boosted ls’s, but any precautions I should take?
don’t run high boost like keep it around 6-8
thats my 2 cents
Thanks for the advice, I was planning on running about 6psi, somethin puny, nothing to destructive. What kind of gas should I use? Are “oil sandwiches” a good idea for oil sourcing? How bad will it be if I don’t use a IC?
i got a sandwhich, i get a good 32 psi on my turbo, which is perfect
vouch for the sandwich get the golden eagle thats the one i have and its really nice. and it has a couple of ports on it so you can run LS/VTEC and an oil pressure gauge along with your turbo
arround how much is the eagle sandwich?
i paid $80 for it forgot where i bought it from though, google it you should find some thing
You can run up to around 12psi on a stock LS with a good tune. I’ve seen even 14psi (on track days) but that engine lasted like a year. I run 10psi on a t304 daily.
The Gas you run is more about the tune (timing) than anything else.
You can prolly run 5-6psi without an intercooler, again the timing will prolly not be as agressive.
You will need injectors. I doubt you can do even 5-6psi with stock injectors. DSM 390’s or 450’s will work just fine and be found for cheap.
IMO the car wont be that fast With a Talon turbo, on 5psi, no intercooler and small injectors. I would save you $$ for at least Injectors, and an intercooler. I would also put a little $$ in the motor, basic prevent maint stuff.
i have the golden eagle plate, it was like 85 bucks.
the turbo will be good, you will have very good midrange and be fun on the street. 6-8 psi should be enough to enjoy it, but you can run up to 10 or so on it(wouldnt recommend more due to map sensor limitations)
Think about going the tapped block route- Like where the oil press sensor goes, tap it and t it off at the firewall- It’ll be cheaper than the sandwich
if its the old talons…its a mitsubishi 14b turbo…if its the newer talons it will have the garret t25 turbo…i would boost 6-8 psi only…anything higher would probably cause you engine to crap out.
Why will the motor crap out at more than 6-8 psi if it’s tuned? I’ve been running 11psi on a 14b for 7 months, and 2 other friends have been doing the same for 3 and 4 years, respectably.
well if your cars tuned and built…you can boost up…im saying if the motor is stock…you can’t expect to run any higher…your motor will crap out…i’ve worked on motors in the past with too much boost for a stock engine…blown rods, pistion rings, etc…ever seen a mistubishi 3000gt vr4 boost 22psi…hahaha…poor kid had to purchase a new engine for 5 grand…
He said compression #'s are good. Go for it!
That turbo will see full spool before 3500 rpms, which should mean great daily driving fun. Just keep it mild like these guys are saying, don’t get greedy with a stock motor.
