Engine starting delay

Well as the title says, I’m having starting delays. On occasions, I’ll have a 4 to 5 second delay. That means no sound of the engine cranking for at least 4 seconds when key is all the way to the start position. Thats only when the car starts cold. On normal driving days the car starts up fast.

I need an integra guru to help me diognose this problem. I’ve searched and I’m thinking its my starter. Things that I replaced are:

  1. battery (optima brand)
  2. (grounds) engine to chassy & battery ground
  3. distributer and ignitor

My car runs very smooth when started. Tell me what your opinions are. Thanks.

Is your engine cranking for the 4-5 seconds? If it is and just not starting it could be your fuel pump building up pressure, this is a early sign for the fuel pump failing. The reason it would start right up again when warm is because the lines are still pressurized. If it is just not responding for the first five seconds or so I have no clue what that could be. Most likely electrical but I hvae never seen that before.

Good luck, hope it works out for you!

PS before you start ripping your fuel pump rent a fuel pressure tester which you can hook up to the top of the fuel filter and test the pressure I beleive 92-93 tegs are supposed to run at about 42 PSI. But check a manual for exact pressure. Cheers

No. theres no sound for that period of time. It doesn’t have a hard time starting once it turns over. Runs well. I would hold the key to the start position until it starts.

I would tighten/replace the ground to the starter. I have heard of this preventing startup. Scape up the contacts real good and tighten them down well. Hopefully this helps.

Yeah I’ll try that. Thats one ground i haven’t checked. Is there a way I can see the ground wire in clear view or do I have to remove the air induct tube out to see it?

It’s a bitch to get to i would remove the intake tube and you should be able to get to it.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your input. Is there anyone else out here who has this problem? Just like to get more feedback.

I would check the ignition switch the black/white wire is what powers the starter relay by way of the clutch interlock switch (M/tranny) by way of the neutral safety switch (A/Tranny).

i have the same problem every once in a while, (especially on hot days, its not my MFR). On mine it was (or still is) the grounding wire on the starter, sometimes it either falls out of place or just needs a good cleaning. It would be a good place to start.

i had the same problem and it was a loose connection from my battery in the trunk to the engine bay. do you have any charging issues?
i thought my starter was going, but noticed one day when it was happening that my lights were dimmer than normal, so i tightened everything up and proble solved.

make sure your battery, connections, and alternator are all good to go.

If it is the small wire on the starter that you are having trouble with. That is starter solenoid wire. I do not remember any ground wirers on the starter. The starter relay is behind center of dash right of heater assembly

Rx3- So there are no ground wires attached to the starter?

There are two wires going to the starter so I imagine one is a ground. Most domestic starters are common ground to the engine but i guess ours isn’t for some reason.

Cheers!

What are the two wires? Positive wire from battery and whats the next wire? The ground wire?

Yeah the other is power

Guys- thanks for your input. I’ll try the ground thing. And if that doesn’t work, Imma coming back to you. =)

I had the same exact problem and I ended up replacing the ignitor , the coil and cleaning the ground on the starter (all at the same time) and never had the problem again.

The ignitor and the coil were replaced only b/c one was bad and the car wouldnt start, it just so happens that I decided to clean the starter ground and the hesitation never came back.

Is the car an automatic or manual?

There are no grounds on the starter.
