On my way to work tonight, I come across a power-tripping police officer. Just as I was about to cross the state lines, he pulls me over. Having a feeling I was being targeted from the start, I kept my rev’s low intentionally to keep the exhaust from getting too loud. I have stock headers, catalytic converter, and Tanabe Hyper Medallion exhaust. I’ve had my Integra LS for about a year now. Back in June, I got a repair order for my exhaust (all because I took it 5k 1st and 2nd off a light). This time I get pulled over, he writes me a TICKET… seriously… $60 for excessive exhaust noise. Then police officer comments, “I could be a dick and write you a repair order, but I’m just going to give you a $60 fine.” He must really be tripping, I’m thinking of putting a silencer on and db testing it, then show up in court.
I don’t speed nor condone racing, and I abide by the rules. My justification for my exhaust noise is just that of motorcyclists, you want to be heard on the street. Which is safer? Hearing a loud “Rice Cooker” or a silent Hybrid Prius about to hit you??
Thats just how it goes in some cities… I myself have had this happen to me as well.
In fact, it is ILLEGAL to have any exhaust modification that is not stock in Salt Lake City. So even though I dont live IN the city, I have to drive through it every day, so everyday I chance being pulled over due to an Exhaust Infraction. Its just another way for the city/state to make money off of people. Sadly enough, there’s not a whole lot you can do about it.
show-off…consider yourself lucky. in California, you would of gotten a fixing ticket($10-$15). therefore…you would have to get a state ref.(an annoying ass smog check-$35-$45). also, the hassle of putting everything back to stock(time=money) in order to pass the state ref. then after passing the state ref., having to go back to another police officer and getting the ticket signed-off stating that you corrected the modification(s). i didn’t i mention, this is considered getting off easy!!! some people gets their car towed/impounded($200-$300+). in some cases, vehicle can’t leave impound lot unless modified part is removed(they charge you for this too at the tow yard, price $50-$400+). pretty much a “mechanic” pulls off all the illegal items and throws it in your back trunk. now at this point, most likely you can’t drive your car home anymore because u’re either missing an intake/header/exhaust…so you would have to get your car towed home, ($80-$150). oh yeah, at the end of it all, you would STILL have to get it state ref.(proceed back to the top of my reply), that’s another $45-$70 added to the bill.
adding all that up:
getting off easy: $45-$70
getting jacked: $375-$920+
don’t think im just throwing these numbers out there…i speak from experience.
Yah man consider yourself lucky. Cops are allowed to profile, and they DO profile imports. It’s just part of the game, and it’s not just Hondas. You see Hondas targetted more than domestics but anything fast gets hit with these eventually.
yea the cali ref is ridiculous i speak from experience as well. loud exhaust in an alley way and sent to a ref an having to swap out motors and buy tons of parts it came out to like 1000 dollars. and they wouldnt reumberse me, i was 17 then.

Your exhaust is loud, did you expect not to be targeted?
You may want to be heard with your exhaust, doesn’t mean everyone else wants to hear you.
I also got pulled over w/a exhaust, the cop made me pop my hood and I had an illegal no brand intake, that is $400 just for that, plus taking it to the ref was an extra $50. I had the silencer put back on and oem intake and barely passed.
I hate these asinine laws that are obviously enacted solely for revenue-generation. I wish they’d get more Harleys for this crap because I hate having to suffer ear damage every time they pass by and I have my window down. For the record, I don’t like loud exhaust on ANY vehicle. I find it pointless and I find Harley drivers’ “safety” reasoning for their loud exhausts entirely bogus.
Revenue generating laws are pretty bogus but if you know they exist don’t get pissed if you break them and get caught. A perfect example of this is a law my town has on the books. No parking on the street between 2am-6am. If you do and get caught its a $35 fine. Other night I helped a cop make his quota. I invited a nice young lady over for an evening of fine food and drink. We both parked on the street instead in my designated lot spaces. We ate and drank and decided to “watch a movie”. Well the alarm went off at 602am and walked outside to 2 parking tickets, one on her car and one on mine. Being a nice guy I decided to pay them both off. The tickets were issued on a thursday and usually you have 7 days to pay them off. The officer was kind enough to make the pay by or appear in count date the following monday. He didn’t enter the tickets into the “system” so I couldnt pay them online, so my only choice was to pay them in person before monday. The violations bureau is only open from 9am-3pm mon-fri and there is no parking anywhere near the police station. I lost nearly 2 hours of pay as I had to leave work to pay the tickets. I had to park at a meter and pay the fee. After all was taken into account 2 $35 tickets cost me around $200 (loss of pay, lots fees, “court costs”). I should have just hired a hooker.
a hyper medallion makes no noise. that cop was just a prick. however it is aftermarket. here in quebec it’s the same thing. exhaust has to be stock no exception. cops even pull over stock sti’s and srt4’s for their stock exhaust because they really have no clue.
dude, thease fix it tickets are always bull shit because the cops always mark them as moving violations which can go on youre record. of course im in washington state so im speaking from my knowledge. but YES! if you drive a lowered honda you will be harassed all the time by cops. ive gotten to know all the federal way cops by name. especially one that always patrols my area that i live in. hes written me tickets for car being too low (conflicting with an rcw of headlights cant be lower than 24 inches) took that to court and won on technicality becuase my car was under load on an un eaven surface. and iv had tickets for illegaly modified headlights and ive won those because i show them the autozone recipt and wraper. my last ticket i got was for a deffective exuast. my parents payed to have my exuast re-done 3 weeks prior to this ticket in case this would have happened. lol funny cause it did. i got the muffler replaced with a magniflow. also had my system checked for leaks. however the state of washington does not do decible checks anymore so its all up to some rouge officer to make the decision. i took that to court and showed him my recipt and i was dismissed. cops that have nothing better to do piss me off. its funny how they never harass people in hot rods. its always the imports.
oh yea, my “deffective exhaust” ticket was for 150 bucks. thank god i got that thrown out

its funny the profiling, ive been pulled over on my zx750r with full Muzzy H/E and it was just a little louder than the stock exhaust not even coming close to a harley got pulled over and ticketed went to state ref got DB test passed and was good to go, and i know its profiling on any import vehicle cause i can roll around in my 66 el comino w/ 3in turn downs all day and cops give me compliments. i can drive my 78 power wagon pickup with flow master 40s and turn downs befor the bed and not get pulled over but when i drive my DA from the house to work get hassled all the time its funny
i was on my way to the raceway with my uncle, him in front of me in his 56 chev truck tubbed runnin open headers couldnt even here my DA running, stop at the light my uncle is reving up just show boatin havin a good time light turns green and we start rolling well at the gas station the across the intersection was a shereiff soon as we pass he turns his lights on and comes out after my uncle so i thought, i pull off to the side of the road to let the cop past and my uncle pulls over a few car lengths down the road expecting the ticket… the cop pulls behind me and says “do you know why i pulled you over for son” i said no respectively “your exhaust is to loud i could hear you across the intersection and it shook my windows when you drove by” i was like are you serious i didnt even rev my engine at all. we argued for a few i still got a exsesive noise tickets but my uncle paid it… that is profiling for you right there my uncle even argued with him and was threatened to get back in his truck
Wow, you got pulled over with a Hyper Medallion? I have this exhaust and it’s very quiet. I put on HKS tips on and it got even quieter though. I never get looked at with my exhaust and I’m in California. That’s crazy a cop got you for that. I’m sure its for the Big ASS tip the Hyper Medallion has though. I would recommend getting stock looking tips on it and I’m sure you won’t have problems.
gotta love the big MD i was told by a mechanic in baltimore who inspects cars and checks vehicle rules and regulations regularly with a maryland state policeman and the policeman said as long as there are no leaks in the exhaust and hangers are intact and you have proper emissions equipment your exhaust is fine basically you can have just a pipe coming out the back not necessarily needing a muffler because they don’t have the equipment at the state police barracks or the inspection centers to read the DBs. As long as its safe.This is all pertaing to being pulled over because the exhaust is to loud BS repair orders.
