Finally Getting My Turbo Set Up Going

Did we just become best friends?

Awesome updates. I think you are ready for the dyno :hyper:

Thanks. Yeah mine isn’t “flexfuel” but I’ve never seen just an e85 badge. How much is it for that set up on our cars? My friend was looking into it for his 2013 sti, but the ethanol sensor and setup was $700. Not worth it in my book

Wo…had to go find my cat to make sure you didn’t steal her lol Does yours have white on it’s tail and paws? I’ve never seen a Siamese cat with white fur before

Getting there. Omni 3 bar map sensor is on it’s way. I wanted the 2.5 bar, but all I could get was the 3 which is fine. After that it’s just a downpipe, dump tube, and hondata

Decided to go take some new shots of the car now that it’s back on the road. I was on E and wasn’t willing to run out of gas (e85 stations are both 10 miles from my house) so I just went to a spot in my neighborhood for some quick shots

This one ended up being my favorite for some reason

Nice pictures. Car is looking good

Yep, tips of paws and tail.

Awesome photos by the way. What do you use for camera/editing software?

I missed that picture, I have one of those guys too. No white, if anything his whole body is tan now. Chocolate point apple head.

D’awwww, kitties.

Car is looking great as always, man.

Seeing so many red/maroon DAs these days. Making me think my distaste for red is gone lol.

Soooooo cleeeeeean!

Thanks

Thanks. I shot those with a Canon T1i, Canon 24-105f4 L, and used adobe cs6 for the editing

Siamese cats are the coolest. Mine just had to get a big spot on her back shaved off cause the fur was getting matted and started to look like dreds lol

lol kitties! Thanks. I wasn’t a big fan of red when I bought it, but it’s grown on me. I wouldn’t paint it this color though if and when I do re paint it

I’ve put 200 miles on my car since finishing it so I decided to raise it up and do a once over on everything to make sure it’s all still good. Found no leaks, everything is still tight, compressor and turbine wheel are both oil free, turbo doesn’t have any shaft play and spins freely, haven’t lost/burnt any oil, and no coolant loss either. Can’t ask for anything better then that. I’m happy =]

Bearings are broken in on the turbo as well. No more stopping at idle =]

Still waiting on my map sensor, no big deal on how long it takes to get to me since it wont go on until I’m ready to dyno. Still don’t have money to get a downpipe or dumptube made…or get hondata =[

Being trying to decide what to do for the downpipe though. I’ve been concerned with the 2.25 diameter of the rsr exmag that I’ve got on the car. I don’t want to get rid of that exhaust, it sounds too nice and is too hard to come by to get rid of it. I feel it’s going to be a major restriction though at higher rpms. So I’ve been debating on whether or not to have a cutout put on the downpipe somewhere. Either electronic or boost actuated, which ever I can afford. I think that would be the best option. I can keep the quiet rsr for driving around and then when I want to run or really get on it, just open the cutout and be restriction free. Just an idea, idk for sure yet. Like I said I can’t afford to make the downpipe yet so I’ve got time to think

Even if you decide it’s too small a setup to run on boost, I’d really try to talk you into keeping it.

I hate the idea of an RS*R going to someone who may not appreciate it… Though it may be a good chunk of change, I’d hang mine on the garage wall before selling it lol

LOL! Got one better, hang it on my Christmas tree every year as an ordainment. I could (if I choose to take it off) have it extended and put it on my db1. That car is just too big of a beater for that. Plus it costs more than the damn car did lol

I would definitely put a boost-actuated cutout in the downpipe if you want to keep the RSR. 2.25" is way too small for the high-rpm fire-breathing monster that is a turbo B-VTEC. I’m at 3" turbo-back and am considering going to 3.5" eventually due to an exhaust size calculation I ran across on the interwebz.

I looked into those last night…sooo expensive =[ And the ones I saw opened up at 11 psi. I’m only gonna run 13 so that’s a bit late to be opening. Those are meant for high boost setups. The electronic ones seem to be the right choice for my setup, and they’re cheaper. $150 ish compared to over $300. Where is this exhaust size calculator you used? Might be helpful for me to use that as well.

Did a little throwback Thursday photo. On the left is when I got it in April 2010 and on the right is how it sits now in July 2014

This is the cutout I was thinking of:
http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=tp&Product_Code=ATP-ACS-010&Category_Code=BCS

Unfortunately they are out of stock indefinitely though. It might be worthwhile to ask them when they think they’ll have more in stock.

I basically used these two links for the exhaust sizing info:
http://www.exhaustvideos.com/faq/how-to-calculate-muffler-size-pipe-diameter/
http://www.mk5cortinaestate.co.uk/calculator5.php

^That link to the one on atp, idk about that one. That 90 degree angle doesn’t seem like it would be all that efficient. I don’t know though, I never took physics. Anyway my friend has a slightly used DMH one that he’ll give me for $50. It’s electric not boost activated, but shit $50 for a good one, I can’t beat that.
That exhaust calculator btw says for the hp I’m looking for at least a 3in pipe. I wouldn’t go any bigger than that right now though. Not for the power I’m aiming for.

So I took my car over to a friend who knows quite a bit about tuning and he helped work on my cruising afr and we got it dialed in. He also looked at my timing and said it was good and safe so I upped the boost to 6 psi >=] I still wont take it above 5k though. I just want to hit it occasionally, not beat on it. Trying to get up steep hills with the 3 psi fuel cut I had set before sucked lol

Ran into a small problem though when I got back home and started checking things. As I was looking at the turbo checking for any leaks on the feed and return I noticed at the bottom of my block, right along the corner of the oil pan gasket there was some oil there. I then checked under the car and sure enough there was a drip of oil hanging on the bottom of the pan and a small (quarter size) puddle on the ground under it >=[

Turns out there was a bit of oil all the way around the pan along the gasket. I can’t say I’m not surprised. Out of all the new gaskets and stuff I replaced while the car was down I reused the old oil pan gasket cause it was fairly new. It was just a Felpro gasket not an oem one like the other gaskets I had used. I’m fairly certain I severely over tightened it as well now that I looked in the book and saw it only needs 9ftlbs. So again can’t say i’m surprised. Just bummed cause everything was nice and leak free.

So now, as soon as I can I’ll get an oem gasket and go ahead and replace it. I’ll also torque it to the correct spec this time as well and hopefully it wont leak anymore.

I feel your pain there man. It took me a few tries to get mine perfectly leak free. The pan gasket gave me an issue or two as well. You’ll get it though!

Yeah It’s minor. I just get paranoid about things and even though it’s small, if it’s not right it’s huge in my head lol

I was doing some research yesterday and found a site called myhondahabit.com. I had never heard of it, but apparently they make laser cut solid composite gasket and stud kit for it that supposedly is damn near leak proof. It’s not cheap though. It’s $80+15 shipping. I think a standard oem gasket will do fine if put on properly and torqued correctly. If that fails again though, then I’ll consider going that route

Made a quick video of me getting on it. I wanted to hear what it sounded like from outside the car. I gotta admit, even though I don’t really like open downpipes…I like the way it sounds. I think the lady at the end with the stroller wasn’t very happy though…

^yeah she was not impressed, lol.

I figured out the solution to your cutout dilemma.

E-cutout + hobbs switch = winning.
