Finally Getting My Turbo Set Up Going

Sooo Thursday night I was going to put the downpipe on, but got interrupted right when I started. A friend was driving by and stopped to ask if I was crazy or just plain stupid. I couldn’t really understand why he asked me that and he goes “Man, you’re nuts for being out here. Go inside. There is a tornado warning in our county”. I didn’t really believe him cause I live in central Texas, tornados aren’t unheard of here, but they’re a rare occurrence. I decided to go in and check the news and sure enough he was right. There were actually 3 tornado warnings within 30 miles of my city. At that point I pretty much said fuck working on the car and closed the garage. Storm came, lots of thunder, wind, lightening, hail, typical storm stuff and there was an F2 tornado that was filmed about 15-20 miles from me. Nothing every came close to my house though so all was good. Freaked me out though cause the last tornado we had was an F5 back in 1996.

So tonight now that the skies were nice and clear I was able to go out and work on the car =] I didn’t have enough wrap left for it so I painted it with that vht stuff. It came out like shit though cause I didn’t do any prep work. It’s just a temporary donwpipe though so it’s whatever.

And another front end shot for the hell of it

My hopes of firing it up tomorrow are gone though =[ My friend still hasn’t gotten me that vacuum manifold. I could fire it up without that stuff hooked up, but I want it to be done. I want my boost gauge working anyway so I can monitor how much vacuum there is to check for leaks. I swear i’ll fire it up sometime this century lol

Lol Thanks. Yeeeah it’s been a long thread, long project. Had that head gasket thing that set it back quite a bit, but I’m glad that happened cause I was able to improve things so much because of it. Good luck with your build, hopefully yours wont take quite as long as mine is taking. Make a thread, post some photos. I wanna see it

ya im trying to get mine done my the end of the summer, was thinking about making a build thread but i plan on getting all the parts i need and doing it all over a week, since i don’t have another vehicle ATM. i do have plenty of photos as it is right now though. on another note, your car is so close man i envy you.lol

Make a build thread man. We need for turbo ones on here. I couldn’t imagine trying to do everything in just one week. Good luck with that. So many little things need to be custom made or changed and tweaked to fit right. With any setup it’s like that, nothing is ever just a simple bolt on process. Make a thread though man, that way if you’ve got any questions me and others can help out.

I finally got the vacuum block today. This is the only shot I could get of it in the dark. I’ll get a better shot when I can. I got the bov, map sensor (still on the oem for right now) and boost gauge hooked up to it. Just need to get some more hose tomorrow and hook up the wastegate and hook it to the manifold.

Once those hoses are put on and it’s all hooked up tomorrow, I just have to put the temporary start up tune I made onto the chip and go get some e85 for it >=] Planned start up is for Saturday. Fingers crossed it’ll happen and that everything will be ok…

I got the rest of the vacuum lines hooked up today so now everything is hooked up and ready to go.

Also went and got some cologne…I mean fuel. Forgot how good e85 smells =]

Came home, poured the fuel into the car, turned the key and primed the system. No fuel leaks and no cel =] I put the basemap I made onto the chip and so now everything is officially ready to go for tomorrow. I could of fired it up today, but my friend didn’t have the other cameras we’re going to use to film it.

After 8 months it comes down to waiting one more day. I’m nervous and yet really excited. Everything has been checked and I know it’s all ready to go, but its been a long time since its ran so the nerves are there no matter what. I’ll post the video on Sunday as long as everything goes smooth tomorrow…if not, you wont here from me for a while lol

So just an fyi…the car did fire up today =] I had to adjust the cranking and post start up trim quite a bit to get it to fire and stay running, but I got it. It ran long enough to come out to operating temp and there were no leaks, weird noises or any issues besides the tune. I’ve gotta work on that baaaad. I just wanna be able to drive it up and down the street so I’ll work on that this week. All in all after 8 months of work I’m relieved and happy >=] I snapped this photo for now, but the video will be up tomorrow

Nice man.

Been following your FB updates also.

Try to give some insight on “break in” and dude flips out lol. I don’t get people anymore.

Quality work though man… and that picture is pretty kickass!

WTF there is a Valero refinery not 20 miles from my house and there isn’t an E85 pump for over 60 miles! Memphis sucks.

Congrats on the fire-up car bet it feels great!

Thanks man. lol yeah people will say anything on facebook. They don’t realize the motor wasn’t rebuilt. The head was taken apart, but the rings and everything are old so no break in is needed. I’ll tune it so I can drive it around the block and make sure everything is good, then take it to get a real tune when I have everything else ready

Lol really? I’ve got 2 of them within 10 miles that sell it. I refuse to go to one of them though cause they used an old diesel tank and people have had issues with black sludge coming out of it.

Here is the video of me firing it up for the first time with the turbo setup >=]

Sweet editing and videography… And the NIN music was nice to hear also

Thanks, I wanted to make it better but it was so hot and humid I lost interest and just wanted to get the car going. I had quite a scare during it though. I was sitting in the car monitoring the gauges and my friend yells out “Your turbo stopped spinning!”. I thought he was just messing around or trying to freak me out, but he was being serious. When I realized he was being serious he said my face turn super pale and honestly I felt like I was going to throw up. I thought for sure something went wrong, the oil line broke or got clogged and I just ruined my brand new turbo. I immediately shut the car off and checked everything, pulled the oil line and made sure there was oil down at the turbo (which there was). Everything checked out fine, turbo still spun by hand, no shaft play, I couldn’t figure it out so I called my friend aka my turbo guru. He told me to calm down and that everything was fine. He said that’s not uncommon for brand new journal bearing turbos to stop spinning at low idle speeds when they’re first being used. Apparently the bearings inside of them have to be broken in and until they’ve been ran for awhile or have a small amount of mileage on them, they will stop occasionally. He also said if it stops just hit the gas a little and bring the rpms up to get it going again, which I did and it worked. Scared the hell out of me, but apparently it’s normal. Wish someone would of told me that though before hand lol. I just gotta get some run time on it and it’ll be good to go.

So little update. I’ve been messing with the tune just trying to dial the afr’s in at idle and part throttle so I can drive it around. Got it pretty good after adjusting the ect idle compensation and adjustinf the battery offsets.

Got a clip of it idling. Not bad for little tuning knowledge and no 02 sensor to help out.

And listen to this. You can hear the turbo winding down >=] I love it! lol (I was not getting into boost. Vacuum only went as high as -5hg)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXWLrC7DYIQ

Sounds like a diesel lol

I also got the front bumper back on today and it just clears the intercooler. I’m glad I didn’t have to cut the grille out cause I like that complete sleeper look. Which it is…until I start the car. That open downpipe kinda kills the sleeper effect lol I also gave it one hell of a bath and detail job

Gonna take it out to the meet tomorrow night =] Gonna take the laptop and burner with me just in case I need to fix something on the tune. I’ve gotten it up to 45 mph in 5th and everything seems ok, but never know. Also gonna have my friend cruise behind me just in case as well. So excited the time has finally come. So much work and so much time is paying off and putting a smile on my face every time I fire it up >=] Just wanna say again thanks to everyone on here who has given me advice, or helped out in any way. :hugs:

Next step is to get a real downpipe made, a dump tube and get hondata…oh and a map sensor. I did get a red top optima battery the other day. Forgot to mention that. No more having to charge my battery up to get it working

You’re right… if it was for trans cooling there would be 2 ports. this radiator is meant to be used for water cooled turbos like yours. i think it’s a smart choice but also you will prob have to modify the lower mounting bracket on your car so the rad doesn’t sit too high and interfere with the hood

disregard my last post! my computer wasn’t loading the rest of the thread and i thought that was the last post lol

Lol ok. Most of the photos in this thread don’t work anymore for some reason. No idea why, but it sucks

Took the car out to the meet for the first time last weekend and all went well. Car ran great, still no leaks or issues (knock on wood). It did use quite a bit of fuel, but that’s my fault on the tune. On the highway it was running low 13’s while cruising. I can fix that.

I had quite a few people gathering around my car at the meet, which was cool, more than I expected honestly and for the most part everyone was cool and kept their hands to themselves, but I found out there are still some people who haven’t learned to look…but do not touch.

This guy came up with his friend and as I was talking to him about it, he just puts his hands on my fender and leans into my engine bay. I don’t about you guys, but in my book that’s a BIG NO NO. I will never open someone elses hood or lean on someones car. That to me is very disrespectful. I had to yell at the guy for that and people were looking at me like I was an asshole, but I don’t like when people do that. That wasn’t even the worse thing though. This little girl, i’d say she was maybe 4 or 5. She was standing there holding her dad’s hand as I was talking to him and she decided to help herself to pulling the dipstick out. :thud: I really felt bad for yelling at a little girl…but I felt it was necessary. Funny thing, her dad just looks at her…didn’t even tell her no or hey don’t do that. He didn’t say a damn thing to her about it. Apparently people don’t teach their kids these days that cars are to be looked at, and not touched unless you’ve got permission. Maybe I’m weird for thinking that, but that’s how I came up around cars. If it’s not yours, don’t touch.

I got a kick out of this though. I had a mustang guy tell me, and I quote “That manifold is gonna crack, you should of gotten a cast iron one”. I had to take a second and think to myself…did this guy really just say that? lol. I looked at him and said “Umm, this isn’t a cheap ebay manifold. It’s schedule 10 piping and was professionally welded”. He goes “Yeah it’s gonna crack. Those manifolds always crack. Cast iron is the way to go. Will never crack”. I laughed out loud right there on the spot. I couldn’t help myself. I replied to that “I’m pretty sure cast iron is more prone to cracking than a schedule 10 tubular manifold. Seems to me most people choose the tubular design for that reason”. He goes “Psh, whatever”, and walks off. I just laughed like, um ok man whatever. We were all standing there laughing at that.

Two phone shots I got at my friends house before the meet

Got this awesomely blurry cell phone shot of it at the meet =]

And a picture of my kitty Tab chillin’ on my Integra shop manual lol

Hopefully this weekend (probably not though) I wanna go out and find a good spot and take some real photos of the car. I haven’t done a photo shoot of it in a long time. Looking forward to it though =]

Yeah bro… Shoulda went with a cast manifold… I see em all over eBay. They must be good

Glad the build is working out for you! Now, hit the rollers and make some powuh!!

Thanks man. I wanna go dyno it yesterday lol Itching so bad to get on it. I did decide to see if boost fuel cut worked yesterday and I learned it does not =[ I had it set to cut if it saw 1 psi and I hit 3 and it never cut. I then decided to see what 5 psi was like (in 5th on the highway just to see) and it was really slow lol afr was in the low 10’s so it was just bogging down with fuel and pulling timing. I thought I broke something doing it though. I was watching the afr gauge and saw 5 psi and then the car felt like it hit a wall. My face about hit the steering wheel. Scared the shit out of me. Turns out it was the 4k rpm rev limit that I hit, not the boost fuel cut. So the rev limit fuel cut works but not the one for boost for some reason, crome problems I guess. Whatever though, it’s all good and it saw boost for the first time =] I need to adjust the bov cause all I heard when it cut was compressor surge. I don’t plan to try to hit boost again though, I could since I know it’s getting plenty of fuel and pulling timing but idk it makes me nervous. I do wanna see how the bov sounds though…

Anyway. My friend got me a flexfuel badge for my car =] I’ve wanted one for awhile just never went and got one.

Can’t you just leave the WG open so it doesn’t build boost? Manual boost cut, of sorts?

I’m a noob with turbos though…

LOL at the FlexFuel badge. Nice

I guess technically you could, I wouldn’t. I also don’t have a dumptube for it so it would be putting hot exhaust gasses straight onto the radiator which wouldn’t be good.

I’ve heard of people doing that, just to get to the dyno. But yeah, seems sketchy.

Nice, got the same flex fuel badge on my car. Soon to be true flex fuel when I convert to my ProEFI set up. Nice build.
