IMO, the heater vent is the most practical spot. i think having them in the console is a bit too low. they should be visible at a glance. and let’s face it, how often do we use the front vents? unless you have AC.
[QUOTE=Ominous G2;2134477]I’m in again.

this does look sick though. i like how you’re capable of fitting 5 gauges in there:angel:
I use my vents all the time during the summer so vent mounts are a no no. No one used dash mounting cups before? I’ve seen some on ebay and kinda tempted to buy them… don’t know how they will turn out though…
free bump let see some more
I came across the thread figured I would post up. I know people don’t like mounting on the center vent, but I still have the feet and defrost so whatever.
Looks like a gawdamn time-machine!!
In all seriousness, I dig it the ingenuity and the outcome… good work, sir.
Being that I’m only planning to run a single gauge (oil pressure), I’m debating the single a-pillar pod… or, more than likely, mock up a mount that slides into the ashtray opening. I figure if it is angled correctly, it won’t be a total PITA to look down… nor will it be an ‘eye sore’.
Not that I use the vents all that much, but I’ve never liked the idea of mounting gauges there… if it were a track-only car, sure… but I’m trying to keep the interior as oem-looking as possible.

Yeah, same here. Even with my track day car I still like having the vents. Other than the fake CF and lack of vents the above mounting looks really good, very clean. I especially like the consistency of light coloring and that he used the same CF for the gauge cluster, sorta ties it all together. Although the smoked lens looking one does stand out from the others.
I thought I’d posted in this thread before. Maybe it was somewhere else. But here’s mine.

It’s not perfect, but it works, and that’s what counts for now. Eventually I’d like to redo it, and probably add another gauge as well (oil temp). I’d like them to be higher up so they’re easier to see at a glance. Putting where the dash vents is is perfect for height and angle. My liking of the dash vents may just have to suffer. Putting 'em where the radio used to be is a little better for height compared to where they are now, but the angle is worse, plus, once I install my FLP that may block the view as well. And I’ve never liked the pillar pods or mounting them on top of the dash - mainly because they attract too much attention. Hmm, decisions decisions. Oh well, it’s so minor that it’s not even on my to do list at the moment.

I also thought you posted that picture in here already… Either way, I do recall seeing it heh.
Im in complete agreement with gauges mounted on top of the dash… I REFUSE to drill anything into the dash. And the a-pillar would not be my first choice either. As you said, both attract too much attention.
I dislike the angle of putting it in the ashtray… but being that I wont install it where the vents go, or on the dash itself, it may have to suffice.
Decisions, DECISIONS!!!
Haha, I feel like all my car decisions are like that, pros and cons to everything and I’m stuck compromising. That’s getting better now though that I pretty much only use the car for the track. I have to admit though, I still miss the little tray where my gauges used to be. I didn’t realize how much I used that space to put stuff (even if for only a moment) until it was blocked
colin,
is that a double din dvd player? I was thinking about getting one for my car. Is it easy to put in? Also does it tilt up? What kind of dvd player is it? Did you have to do any mods or did it fit just right?
Thanks

Look closer brotha… the radio has been deleted.
hmmm. just occurred to me. sun visors. you could easily hide the wire in the headliner and A pillar. plus you could flip them up to conceal. may be a little high though. but they could be angled for best vision. i dunno. never saw that done before. could be nice if done proper
mine are all over the place. that’s what happens when you buy two, then one, and then another two. this summer i want to relocate all five of them to the radio area like Ominous G2 has his setup.
Thanks guys. I agree Colin, the cheesy fake CF wrap kind of ruins it, I may paint it in the future I don’t know. And that smoked lense looks horrible, along with the silver bezel. I plan on painting the bezel and getting a nicer gauge when i can afford it, just a cheap temp gauge for now. I do love your setup and that steering wheel.
Unified if having the guage in your line of sight is no issue I thought about mounting one on the ‘plate’ that is below the ashtray. SInce they are removable and easily replaceable if you don;t like it you can always get another at a junkyard. Good luck either way.
This is my custom setup. Not into gauge pods much so fab’d this little beauty. First gen, gonna do over again tho

WTF Y WONT MY PIC LOAD!!!
There are some really good i deas on this thread keep them coming people . . .
My current setup in my build car. Not perfect as for clean but best spot visually hands down from the drivers seat.
I’m honestly not a fan of gauge pods so I just did this
Day 134 by AlwaysInVtec, on Flickr
I had a piece of carbon fiber I cut off an old hood to put in there, but I cut it too small so it didn’t work
My dad did it a long time ago idk where he got it from and it been painted to match the dash too. They are really dim at night because they have bulbs from 1987 in there so next time i buy some interior bulbs I’m going to get some nice led ones! Also his pic was taken for the gauges. I can take better ones this weekend when i work on the car!
