i kinda like the thought of a vtec head where the washer/dryer is supposed to be nice build weāll have to hook up since your close haha maybe iāll come out when the swap is going on
Yea lol I moved up to a workshop lol and definitly dude anytime you wanna meet up let me know my emails steveandbeth6804@yahoo.com
Iāll keep you guys posted!!!
hey guys quick question will i have to break in the motor because of a light honing/new piston rings? thanks
please?
yes any time you disassemble you shousld break it in especially with new rings they have to seat to the cylinderwalls
Yeah you have to break it in broā¦walls looks okay but good work so farā¦Iām curious how it turns out. Keep us updated!
i know im alittle ify on the walls lol.so i would just run regular oil for a couple hundered miles than go with any oil i like ive seen different scenerios but most are for hard core rebuilds
iām not sure on the oil, but its more about the driving, everyone has different opinions on how to properly break in a motor some say take it easy on them for the first 500 miles just driving it smooth and steady, others say ābeat itā and take it through the gears but not quite as hard as you would if you were racing. honestly iād check with your local machine shop see what they say.
the way i broke in my motor was driving regularly with the odd pull to 5k and then let off the gas. kinda like down shifting without the actual shifting. letting the engine rev down from a high rpm creates vacuum which sucks the rings out to the cylinder walls, cleaning them up and seating the rings.
the cylinders look really rough. did the machine shop measure the cylinders for you? thereās a good chance that cylinders 2 and 3 are out of round. i recommend sending it back to bore it out .5mm and hone it.
i understand you want to cut costs but IMO machine work is not somewhere you want to cut costs. the life and operation of your engine depends on it.
dude how can you tell that cylinders 2 3 might be out of round and i thought that deglazing and honing are two different things isnt the final product supposed to be a cross hatch pattern?
you canāt tell by looking at it. it has to be measured by the machine shop. i saw my machinist measure mine and the tool he used was something i had never seen before it was a micrometer similar to this one.

with this tool we found out that cylās 2 and 3 were out of round by 4 thou of an inch. it may not sound like much but thatās enough to cause blow by, compression loss and oil burning. i ended up having to bore 20 thou over and got new pistons and rings.
i had never heard of deglazing cyinders. but ya the cylinders should have a cross hatch pattern after honing.
they should look like this when itās done.
ok do i have to bore it or is there a way to fix the walls?wouldnt boring cause the need for new pistons bigger rings and such?
o and im with hondattic how can you tell that cylinders 2/3 arent round?
Bring it to a machine shop and they can check it. Usually you can just hone, but yes if you have to rebore you will need to go a size up in pistons. But yeah looking at your block again dude I donāt think itās gonna fly. Youāll be kicking yourself later for not doing it right when the rings donāt seat etc.
you have to have a machine shop measure it.
if they are our of round, you have to bore it out. youāll need new pistons and rings
if a machine shop wonāt just measure it for you iām pretty sure i got all the measuring equipment anyone would ever need pretty sure i have a cylinder mic so let me know maybe i can come out some time this week, iām no engine builder tho lol i can just measure it and tell you if its good or not
yea ive decided to bring it to the machine shop in providence ri (simplex). i hope i can just have them re hone it and while its there its gonna get cleaned up
LoWnSlOwDa9:i dont have any measuring tools for a motor so ill let you know if i need help if you dont mind.
i donāt think a hone will fix it.
imo spend the money, get new pistons and rings and bore it out .5mm
you can get RS Machine pr3 pistons with rings for something like $200. not sure what the machine shop will charge for the bore and hone.
again i understand that youāre trying to keep it on a low budget but you gotta spend it where itās needed.
put it this way:
Cheap. fast. reliable. pick 2.
my build took about 3 years to complete. i took my time, spent the money where it needed it and when i could afford it. it obviously wasnāt my top priority. i went the extra step to ensure it was going to be reliable because i didnāt want to be doing it all again within a few thousand miles or do all that work for an engine that iām not happy with. sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and fork out the dough.
you may want to rethink your build before diving in to it. if you need any help or advice, feel free to ask. I and many others here on the board can help. iāve built a motor and many others on here have too.
as for right now, weāll wait and see what the machine shop says.
i know but i took it to simplex today and they measured the cylinders today and said it wasnt to bad there gonna fix it without the bore. but your right to be in perfect condition you should bore atleast a little. there a respectable machine shop so ill trust them.
