GSR Sounds like a WRX....help?

i just recently put a MSD Digital SCI+ box on my 93 GSR. mainly for the 2step launch control and the nitrous step retard… anyways. i also put the MSD power cap and rotor on, along with the MSD blaster ss ex-coil and MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor wires. Once i did all of this, starts right up, but doesnt sound like a Honda at all. i rechecked everything. all the wires are connected correctly, the firing order is correct (1-3-4-2), all cylinders are gettin plenty of spark. the box is set on 4cyl, and yet it still sounds like a WRX… please help. i would try to call MSD but they are closed on the weekends.

thanks.

and then just recently added the above^

:wrong:

The only time my car sounded like a suby was:
1: spark plug wire had a disconnection SOMEHWERE. once was the wire had broken inside the boot that connects to the distributor cap. So make sure all your wires are conducting 100% from end to end.

2: I blew a cylinder and was basically running on 3 cylinders.

could it be possible for brand new wires to be “bad”? or could it possibly be that the wire that goes to the coil wasnt constructed right?

^If the spark plug wires got bent, then yea they would be bad. The wires inside the casing are very fragile

why? he got his car to sound like a WRX!! that’s amazing and definitely belongs in the aftermarket engine performance forum. :stuck_out_tongue:

i dont know about you guys, but i love how a WRX or STi sounds.

what about the plugs. Check the gap and make sure that there is a gap. I have many times dropped a plug and closed the gap completely and that cause the spark to arc to the cylinder wall or come back through the wire. Also check and make sure there is no crack on the cap. Testing the spark at the speed that the starter spins is one thing but 750 rpms at idle is alot faster and more margin for error if there is a crack or something. What plugs are you running and what heat range are they?

i did check all the plugs for a gap. they havent closed and are all where they were orignally gapped… they are NGK Iridiums…not sure bout the heat range. and im not sayin a WRX sounds bad, just not for my GSR

You might just want to run some regular ngk 6’s or maybe 5’s. I run $1.77 ngk’s in all of my honda’s(3 built turbo, and 2 all motor) and never had any issues. What do the plugs look like. Are they white, black…etc. Plug identification is an easy way to tell what you engine is doing and if you have hooked everything up right reading your plugs will help. Iridiums,IMHO, tend to run hotter even with the right heat range and can cause lean situations and burn up the plugs really quick(within minutes). Just my two cents. Good luck and I hope I am helping you out in anyway.

well i was runnin the $1.77 ngk’s in it before i got it dynoed. Phantasm Motorsports where i got it done at put those plugs in there b/c is was breakin up really bad. some of the plugs are black… some of them are white… they arent all the same… and not to mention… i lost alot of power… i mean i had to put it in 3rd gear just to climb up a mountain on interstate 40. i can usually race up the hill in 5th… so i lost alot… and yea… anything at this point is helping. thanks man.

Sounds like a dead cylinder. Compression test will tell all

but it was runnin strong before i did this and i have only had it on there a two days… i am just really strugglin with this… i am probably gonna take the SCI off… i dont know… thanks for all the help… still lookin for more suggestions… and i am currently tryin all the ones already given to me… thanks again.

Its probably not a cylinder, but a compression test takes a second and will rule it out.

I would do a compression test and report back because that will tell you alot more. Are the cylinders wet, are the plugs wet(the black ones). I bought a car from those guys at phantasm and they know there stuff so I might go back to them for advice. let us know what you find out. I am interested.

i made that post before it was moved  it was in General Discussion.

see if for some reason your map sensor has become disconnected.

map sensor is a good suggestion, check your connections at the ecu. i had a real bad bogging caused by that.

another suggestion would be, and this also has happened to me. moisture in the spark plug chutes or the cap.

it also happened once when the sleve on one of the spark plug wires split open and it was grounding its self out on the engine.

Goodluck

I agree with him…could just be something so small that it is hard to detect with the naked eye…before you start slingin parts at it. Just seems like ignition problem to me. Any cel’s…? Go ahead and jump the connection and see just to make sure.
