Hard to shift gears after clutch install

I seem to have problems getting into gear sometimes. I was considering the linkage could have bent a little and causing this. Sometimes it shifts fine and other times I have to wait for it to let me shift. I just got a comp 4 clutch. there is about 2.25 qts of fluid so I don’t think that’s the problem.

I adjusted the cable because it seemed like the clutch doesn't dis-engage until I have it pressed pretty low to the floor. I saw a spec somewhere, but not sure how far to tighten it. It seems to be too tight already, so I'm not confident tightening it a lot more. Any info is appreciated.

Whens it hardest to get into geaR? When its warmed up or doesnt matter? See if it shifts fine with the car off.

i had the same problem with the same style clutch. i realised that you need to adjust the clutch freeplay 2-3 times during break in. the freeplay becomes to big and the clutch doesnt disengage fully.

i know this sounds dumb but some clutch faces are identical no matter which side is against the flywheel . check with the manual to see which side needs to be out or which side needs to face the flywheel . it may be on there backwards

It can only go on one way. if it was backwards that’d be a first in my book,

no not all clutches go on one way . some have identical clutch faces . so check with the manufacturer to see which side needs to be out .

One side of the disc is flat, the other sticks out like an inch or so. How you gonna put that on a flat flywheel? Show me one clutch like your talking about.

one clutch

that clutch disk isn’t for a b series trans. furthermore, take an unsprung disk in your hands and look at it. you’ll understand that it only goes on one way.

Exactly!:werd:

thx for the responses guys. weird thing happened, i adjusted the freeplay several times and the first time was real ruff, had to use vice grips. Then one day while i was driving it let loose a lot of slack, now all the sudden it shifts like butter? Was a first for me but I’m loving it now, grabs like hell. First time driving with a really good clutch. Night and day difference. Even makes a huge difference with just my built ls. Hope I don’t have this same problem when I change the cable, but I think I will be ok.

so i’m a little confused, when you have a new clutch during break in you should you tighten the adjustment nut so it “pulls” the arm more or loosen it?

cause i can’t downshift into 2nd unless i really give it a good throttle blip during the double clutch. Its like the syncros dont work. I cant just downshift without double clutching.

there should always be the required freeplay. which is about 1"at the pedal and 4-5 mm at the release arm on the trans. sounds to me like your 2nd gear synchro is finished.

that is unfortunate…i guess i’ll have to use 3rd gear from now on when downshifting at a turn.

why didnt i get the clutch changed earlier… :frowning:
