i have heard different opinions on wrapping headers. some say it s good, some say its bad cus it keep the heat in the header making it crack easier. please shed some light on this. thx
Good Question man, I have some of this on my exh mani,dp,wg dumptube, and exhaust, so i’ll share what i know:
- it does a great job at retaining heat, even improving spoolup times in some apps! i.e. (turbo blanket)
-it can cause cracks to form from overexposure to heat (if you use a quality exh mani, no worries)
-it will jack up your hands from the fiberglass that’s in it , so use gloves!
-using silicone spray on the wrap will protect it from rotting from exposure to moisture, and water, and trapping water/moisture inside causing pre-mature rusting, etc…
-it smells like cookies when first exposed to heat(werd)
-makes more powa!
-it’s worth every penny, Do it. Dooooo it…
oh yeah, canada rules
That is all-
^^^ thank you jasper for the input, it asnswer all the question i want to know. i do have a good mani from neukin thats very well made, so i might go ahead with the wrapping.
No prob sir! happy to help

Stupid question, is a DC sport header defined as quality and just wondering what kind of silicone spray. Thanks in advance.
No such thing as a stupid question sir With the dc sports headers it’s important to know which one you have as adding wrap on one that’s already coated would be counter-productive. A ‘stainless’ one would see all the benifits described above, whereas a ‘ceramic’ one is already treated for heat, and would not be needed. I did wrap a ceramic coated dc header, and it did crack in places, but it was only the coating. Also keep in mind that dc sports will void the warranty if you wrap your header, the reason for this is simply user error. there are MANY ways to wrap a header wrong i.e. unevenly, expose it to water, moisture, etc. As for silicone spray, it is high temp, and meant for the wrap only. Its made by dei, comes in black or silver, and can be found by doing a search here- www.summitracing.com :burnout:
Almost all non-turbo headers will be okay if with wrap. NA application headers are not under the stress of holding up the weight of a turbo, hence they are not likely to crack (Unless you have some REALLY REALLY cheap headers), GIVEN that your exhaust setup allows for some flex. (Either with a flex pipe, or with spring bolts)
Turbo manifolds are more likely to crack since most of them have to hold up the weight of the turbo, This is where the quality of the manifold matters alot. If you have a cheap turbo manifold, it will be more likely to crack from the extreme heat.
i think im gonna ceremic coated instead
Really? may i ask why? just curious.
i have been reading on other forum, and seems like ceremic coating is the way to go jasper. check out www.fireballcoatings.com
also few locals with boosted car all went for the coating after trying the heat wrap. it cost a bit more but i think is worth it
Ah, cool thanks for the info I’ve used high temp coatings in the past with my turbo rotary car, as thier exh temps get stOOpid high,(1300-1700) and found that for the extra cost, it’s deff a viable option. I would also check out jet-hot coatings, as this was the company we went with for our (mazdatrix) drag car way back when.
im going with the XMC coating from fireball. read up on it jasper, just too bad its in canada.lol
I wrapped my manifold, down pipe and did a turbo shield with wrap from https://www.thermalzero.com/ I actually found it on amazon but that was the sellers site. great stuff really reduce my under the hood temps and had s/s zip ties.
other than coatings on my turbo and manifold. I only wrap the downpipe. the advantages of thermal coatings vs. wraps are night and day. coatings are advantagious. jasper there are quite a few companies that do coatings here in the U.S. one company i use(westcoast) is www.olycoatings.com . to be honest with you, there all the same or very close. usually the flat black is the highest temp coating barrier.
my turbo manifold is currently wrapped but i’m looking into getting it coated. haven’t had any problems with it cracking but then again it’s a quality piece made locally by my insane fabricator. would like to find a local place however to get it coated.
