HELP ASAP removing axel

right now i am in the process of replacing my alternator. im a bit confused. WHAT IS THE BIG SPINDLE NUT??? i read on helms i needed a 36 mm socket to remove it so i bought one for 10 bucks but i have no clue what the big spinddle nut is. and im having a hard time removing the axel from the lower control arm. i removed the castle nut already, having trouble seperating the lower arm from the axel. HELP ASAP PLEASE IM STUCK HERE LOOKING AT MY CAR ON JACKSTANDS

The axle nut is that huge nut that holds the axle on, that big nut that sits in the middle of the whole assembly. It also sits in the middle of the rotor. To seperate the balljoint, you either have to get a ball joint seperator, or do what the rest of us do, hit the side of the control arm untl it seperates.

Ok. I’m pretty sure the big spindle nut your talking about is the nut that holds the axle in. Its in the middle of the rotor! Pop that off first!

Then you need to get the rotor part of your suspension off the control arm. Nowremove your lower ball joint bolt. Then remove your tie rod end bolt. Pop both them off with a puller. Then you should be able to grab the rotor and pop the outside end of the axle out!

Then get a pry bar and carefully pry the inside of the axle out of your tranny, or the other part connected to the tranny. Should come out with alittle jimmying!

Just take your time. Not a hard project. Hope i’ve been clear! Good luck!

Ryan

what size is that big spinddle nut? on helms it said 36 mm but i just bought one and its too big. and where can i get a seperator? the lower arm is stuck on the knuckle.

Should be a 32mm I think 36 is for Accords. Be careful when pulling the axle so you don’t seperate it from the CV.

yes, its 32mm, not 36mm. Hopefully you have a powerful impact wrench, or at least a huge cheater bar. (I’ve broken 3 or 4 1/2" Craftsman breaker bars w/ 3-4’ cheater bars on them trying to break loose axle nuts).

You might have to soak it in PB Blaster to break some of the rust off.

man… been trying to take off that stupid nut all nite… giving me a hard time… i didnt even get to the alternator… and its been at least 5 hours trying to disembly the axel and other parts to get access to it… man im prob call it quits…mind wreaking… thanx everyone for there help though… even though it was still confusing… people giving different names for different things and different instruction on how to do it.

is it ok to use wd 40 on it?

Well you might get lucky and not have to pull the whole axle. You can try to loosen the bolts that hold the intermidiate shaft and swing the axle downward. It might give you enough room to getthe alternator out.

ahhhh angered… busted my ass for 7 hours and no luck… so i have to leave it to tommrow to attempt again… is it bad to leave the car on the jacks? i left the driver side on the jack stand only. will that do any harm to the car at all?

nah dude its fine like that. as long as its a stand and not a jack you’re straight.

if you’re only trying to remove the alternator, try this…

if you can’t get the axle nut off (and thus be able to remove the axle)…
-take apart the lower ball joint to allow you to pull the axle from the intermediate shaft

OR

-unbolt the upper control arm to chassis mount bolts (where your camber kit would bolt to the body) and pull the whole knuckle assembly out so that you can hopefully pull the axle out of the int. shaft.

once the axle is out of the int. shaft you should be able to pull out the alternator.

Ok, so far, i got out the axel bolt ( thanx to some help of a impact gun ) after breaking 2 socket wrenches. and i seperated the lower tie rod from the knuckle. so all that is left is to pry out the driveshaft from the intermediate shaft. THIS IS A BIATCH! i cant pry it out. i tried almost everything screwdrviers. flat pliers. crowbars. Does anyone have any clue how to pry out this out? the only thing that is blocking my way to the altenator.

A crowbar didnt work?

That’s odd, all I needed to use, was a large thick screwdriver, like the kind you buy at autozone.

Make sure your prying at the right spot, and you DID remove the axle from the knuckle/hub already, correct?

A brass punch, Hammer, and some grease will come in handy later.

yea i already removed the axel from the knuckle. i am prying it at the spot where the intermediate shaft and the silver thing right after the CV boot is. It is coming out a bit but i cant pull it out. ITs like stuck or sumthing. ill try using something else. anyone else used something else?

im using a large screwdriver right now. it got loose but wont come out all the way…i got it bout 1/8 inch out but its not budging anymore. i really need some help.

Well, if you can’t get it out, just take out the intermediate shaft aou also…

FCUK i had enough… this is a pain in the A hole. one problem after another. cant stand it… stupid bolts are always on too tight…nuts are stripped…cant get the driveshaft from the intermediate shaft…i dunno. really desperate…sorry had to vent…i wanna just torch the whole axel and alternator on fire…damn should have just let the mechanic install it… woulda been much easier on my sanity… word of advice to future people that attempt to do this junk. DONT!

It’s not that hard if you’ve done it before. Try this, pull the axle with intermediate shaft out as one piece. It should be very easy to pull from the tranny. You have to remove I believe the three bolts that hold the intermediate shaft in place. After that, you should have easy access to the alternator.

i read up on how to take out hte intermediate shaft, you gotta drain the tranyn fluid then take the 3 bolts out and then still gotta somehow get the intermediate shaft from the tranny. Which i think will be stuck on tight too…i dont want to mess around with anything that dont need to be touched, dont wanna dig myself a bigger ditch. man… even the alternator bolts are on really tight to. anyone from the 909 Riverside area down to help me? i would really appreciate it.
