i have a 92 automatic trans. LS with 126,000 miles on it. my problem occurs when i come to a stop (like at a traffic light). my idle will drop down to like 200 rpm. and my teg will shake/vibrate real bad like its gonna stall out untill i throw it in neutral. its been doing it for a while. it use to only happen every once in a while, but now its just about all the time. has this happened to anyone? what do i do to fix it?![]()
you read my mind
You read my mind. I’m driving a 1991 LS with 111000 miles. I have the same problems at traffic lights and whatnot. I’ve heard it helps to reset the ECU. However I havent’ tried it yet. Any advice anyone?

from my knowledge it is your alternator. i should be able to be 100% sure of if that is correct or not. If you give me a couple of days and wait for my major change over on my car, i’ll et you know.
I’m getting 99 ls head on my 91 ls and MSD sci ignition, AEM pulleys and ZEX kit. zex kit in a week or two. rest i’m getting done tomorrow i think =)
keep me informed on what you guys find out and i will do the same for you. this sh*ts gettin real annoying. LODOSS - what leads you to believe its the alternator? I did hear something about it might being the ecu though. keep in touch guys.
Japanimated,
Do you have any aftermarket mods (intake, exhaust)? I have an intake and I’m wondering if that could have something to do with it. I’ve heard to pull a fuse in your ecu will help, but my fuse puller was gone when i bought my car.
Keep in touch, how about some of you teg mechanics help us out on this one!!!

yeah i’ve got some mods…
- iceman comp. intake
- arospeed oil beather
- aem truetime adj. cam gears
- nakayama exhaust
if anyone knows what might be the prob or knows someone who does, post here or e-mail me.

But it seems like there should be an idle adjustment screw on the throttle body. Have you looked for that?
Other possible causes:
-old spark plug wires
-valves out of adjustment
-bad motor mounts
-could something in the transmission be out of balance?
-old distributor cap and rotor
-O2 sensor
-???
no screw that adjusts idle. the iac should be opening up but it doesn’t seem to be. try cleaning iac passages or motor itself. if not do tegs have a lockup tq converter if so see if you can disconnect it w/out affecting any other circuits?
IAC??? ----TRANSLATE…IAC = … where is it located?
there is an idle screw!
it is located on the passenger side of the intake manifold. it is easily adjusted, just scratch off the paint, and you’re good to go.
my idle has a different problem, it is bouncing from like 800/1500, it is very annoying.
i have the service manual, and it said the #1 problem is hoses/connections. I’ve checked all the vacuum hoses, actually replaced one of them, but this didn’t fix the problem.
tomorrow i will check to see what the #2 thing to check is, but it’s not the alternator.
could bad plugs actually result in a crappy idle?
its not an idle screw its a throttle stop screw , its so the butterfly doesn’t bind in the throttle body. if you turn that to much you can through some things out of whack. and the iac is IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR it is a little motor that drives a pintle in and out of your idle passage it backs out if it senses a load (turning the wheels at a stop or a/c or fan kicking on) it also closes the passage way if you have to much air coming in(vac leak or stuck tb) the screw will just leave your throttle blade open a slight bit more letting air in that way. but won’t fix the prob. it will fix the cause of the prob. after you shut your car off you get hot soak, all the vapors in your intake burn and settle in little passages and rough surfaces after 126k i’m sure it has to be somewhat crusty. i’ve cleaned tons of them and got them working again. did it to mine as soon as i got it and it idled at 2300 rpm after cleaning it b/c some shadetree turned the screw when all it was , was carbon in my idle circuit passages , so i put the screw were it was supposed to be and i’ve never had a prob. since. alternator output could be low to though. my system weakened mine and at an idle my rpms were hunting. from 200 to 800 so i got a higher amp output alternator and a power cap. for system. two totally different times though/ same prob. GOOD LUCK BUD.
so what should i clean to fix my idle problem?
my idle bounces, would cleaning ‘whatever’ possibly fix my problem?
thanks
thanks bro, but where is the IAC located? do i clean the IAC(how?) or do i clean the throttle body? ---- also what i’ve noticed is excessive heat comming from under the car and on a day when the problem happens alot, my fan will stay on for a couple of minutes after i shut off my car. WTF!!! oh…because i have an oil breather and ended up capping off the valve from the intake that connects the line to your valve cover(for the oil), could that be a cause? i don’t know, maybe it’s not getting enough air to cool it. what do you think?
japanimated, you prob have a leak in your radiator bro… could be the hoses or it could be the actural radiator… get it fix soon
like i said, alternator could be the problem. =)
actually… i do have a leak comming from my tranny coolant line which comes off of the bottom of the radiator. i’m thinking that might be my heat problem, but no where near a good excuse for my idle prob… right?
not too sure about idle, i still think it’s the alternator give me couple of more days to test out more stuff, after i get my car back. But yet, your car being overheated and fan stays on after you turn your engine off is cause of radiator leak bro.
i have idel problems too but by tomorrow i’ll have all new belts pulleys engine head, etc etc. If my car still idle’s rough, i’ll play around with the idle screw and IAC. if that does’nt work then i’m almost 100% it’/s the alternator.
na bro---- its not over heating, i’m saying that when my idle drops low, i feel alot of heat comming out from underneath the car. there’s no scent, so its not exhaust fumes.
jap, that’s normal bro
