help (turbo shit going on)

so here we go. started tuning yesterday. had it going to about 10 psi steady. had everything set and then all the sudden it started running like crap. would not rev above 3k. and so we changed plugs and reset ecu. was throwing a map code. but not i got that solved. but now the bov doesnt open and i can hear the air being forced out the compressor. and when i hooked the boost controller back up to the car it is not making above 4 lbs of boost. disc and it makes just about wastegate pressure so like 5 lbs. so i have no damn clue as to whats going on. mind u this setup is a week old. and all parts for it were new. any help would be appreciated.

what brand turbo? could it possible be a bad seal in the turbo?

id start with putting all new vacuum lines. its cheap and will eliminate any chance of a vacuum leak. did you check if you have any exhaust leaks?

thanks for the advice. update::got the idling problem and shit fixed. checked all vacuum hoses, they are fine. no exhaust leaks. check the diaphram on the wastegate as well as the intercooler to possibly see if there were any leaks. found nothing. did a compression test. that came out good. but on one note when this all started happening we heard a loud pop like a charge pipe blew. but could that have been when the bov broke? idk any ideas cuz i have none. oh ya its a 42/48 garret turbo,t3 if you will.

if the bov is brand new, i’d go ahead and check the ic piping. it sounds like its the problem anyway.

i was boosting 10psi and that shit happened to me a couple times…i just overtightened the clamps and now good to go.

start with the inexpensive stuff first, then if you think you need to replace parts, then go for it.

i’ll double check all that.

okay just check and re tightened all the couplers as well as rechecked all the welds on the ic piping. everything looks okay, but still not boosting above 4 ish psi. so idk.

what are you using for tuning? chipped ecu?

at the moment im running an afc neo with a wideband.

timing belt hasnt slipped has it???

ive seen it happen and make little boost not rev hard… miss firing just a idea

i’ll check that. also could some afc settings have some effect on this. what are my in an outs supposed to be.? uhm also is it better to run a hotwire or pressure setting on the afc. i got a air fuel’s dialed in. but idk just a thought?

it would prob have more effect on ur timing… because if the timings out it may do the same thing…

look how antilag and launch ctrl it makes boost by chaniging the ignition timing and allows boost to be made and wont let it rev high

does that make sense?

yeah. because anti lag deals with more advanced timing an such,so it creates boost almost instantly. but, if too retarded it will not generate enough exhaust gas,i.e making it not create as much boost. but i mean it would have to be like seriously very retarded. but i’m going to check that in a minute and see whats going on.

timing is fine. redid a leakdown test and that came out ok. so i guess the only other thing would be the turbo???

what engine management r u running?

i dont think the turbo would be the problem unless its grinding on the housing or something, because its still making boost which means the wheels r still attached, there isnt smoke? if not then no oil seals r stuffed… ur intercooler isnt stuffed or blocked is it?

or bovs not leaking?

or ur intake manifold isnt leaking somewhere?

check the intake wheel of the turbo and see if it spins freely… its a possiblity…

just on another not

the neo afc is that all u have to modify stock ecu for a turbo setup???

im chasing a ecu mod or ecu that i can easily get tuned because good tuners in aust are hard to find…

so therefore im looking at options and other methods

yes sir that and a wideband to monitor my air/fuels. but on another note i did check the compressor housing and i looked fine. i’m going to check the exhaust housing and see if its okay. but other than that i’m getting another wastegate to check it all out. bov does seem sealed good though. but i’ll see if i can seal it better.

it shouldnt make boost at all if the exhaust wheel isnt there… best way is to see if there is any end float or movement in the shaft in the housing…

i just put my mouth to the bov and blow u shouldnt b able to get any air out if its not broken…

the wastegate wouldnt modify the engine rpm though…

do u have any pics u can send me of ur turbo setup. including ur mounting for the intercooler etc.

so i pulled off the turbo and i checked it. no too bad visually. but when u move around the cartridge and keep the blades still u can hear what sounds like ‘sand’ or like some metal shavings or something inside the cartridge

oil change??? check any fillings in there??? does it spin freely though???
