help with the "3500rpm rattle"

i have this problem at 2400rpms and often at just above idle when i start the engine cold (idle at about 1500) noise happens just above idle when i feather the accelator, sometimes at about 1800 rpms or so. how is this problem fixed, i’ve searched the forums on the board, everyone talked about it but i didn’t see anything on how to FIX IT.

thanks alot

something is call WARM UP. let it warm up man. all cars have weird noise when is not at their operational temperature…

If your car rattle after warmed up at 3k rpm, then i think that’s the heatshield, cos i have that sound too. Happen right at 2900-3100 rpm when i release the paddle, so annoying. I think i am gonna look into it when its not that cold.

i have the same type of rattle at the SAME rpm level you’re mentioning…however, i removed my entire heatshield and the rattle is still there sometimes. i’ve been trying to determine where the rattle has been coming from for months now…its so annoying when you let off the throttle and hear that…

If is not heatshield, is the heatshield on the cat, if i am not mistaking, it can rattle against the shifter…(?)

Besides, that’s the only 2 think that can rattle… unless the header is cracked or something.

what kinda sound is it?? do you have a short shifter? cause i have a short shifter and when im at certain RPMS it rattles against the muffler!!

the sound is hard to describe…like a metallic rattling, when you let off the gas right around 3k rpms. yeah i have a short shifter…and i removed the ENTIRE heatshield, not just a section. when i was installing the ES Shift Bushings a couple days ago, i looked again, and nothing it hitting or touching the shifter or anything…weird

it makes the noise at idle when its cold but after i let it warm up for like 10-15 minutes, the noise happens at about 2400rpms. sorry i didn’t clarify, after it warms up, the noise at 1500 goes away but it almost always stays at 2400rpms.

it is like a metal on metal rattle that gets on my last nerve every time i let off the throttle and sometimes even when i get on the throttle. sounds like something coming from behind the instrument panel though, cuz its really loud and i’m sure its not trickin my ears. i haven’t installed a short-shifter… yet. i have an APC short throw getting ready to be installed, along with some coilovers and stuff, (Damn i LOVE CHRISTMAS MONEY) this is a little off topic but i purchased a spoon performance chip for my car. a good friend of mine is putting it in for me hopefully tomorrow.

Happens here too. Except mine happens at higher rpms right when u shift. It almost sounds like the shaft it rattling when you push in the clutch. It could be a bigger problem but it sounds more like exhaust rattles or the shifter linkage bar.

Do you still have the stock resinator on? Mine rattled too when I got my car so I got rid of it by putting a RS*R Ex-Mag catback exhuast on.

But yeah, it’s probably your resinator that has worn out inside.

where is this resinator?

Underneath the car, right after the cat. I believe it’s the “B pipe” of the exhaust system. I had the same type of rattle explained in this thread and I looked over the pipe after I put my RS*R on and sure enough it was the noise that bothered the hell out of me. I had my dad cut it open at work and it turns out that the fiberglass or whatever is used inside the resinator burned out, which caused the inner pipe to rattle against the outer one.

Bump… sorry to bring up something from so long ago, but I am POSITIVE I have the SAME thing going on but it comes from the front end. It sounds like what everyone else describes, like the metal on metal clank type rattle. My car is compleatly stock. It drives me nuts and at times, causes me to speed in hopes that no one will hear it…(ie makin me look :ghetto: ) haha… any who… any other ideas? I really want to eliminate it before we get into drag season! Ahh! please help!
Thnx- Kelli

Is the rattling only when the throttle is open…or does it do it when the throttle is open as well…mine does that as well but only when the throttle is closed…

Closed throttle…

While in Neutral, I’ll push it to 4g… let off… noise at 3500 then again at about 2000… so i guess thats considered closed… it is driving me crazy!
Thnx again, Kelli

So where the fuck does this gay rattle come from? I am guess is from the heatshield…

It not the headt shield it could be you exhaust pipe some rusting inside perhaps. I had the same thing when i changed my header and my exhaust piping it all went away. It wasnt’ the heat shield i took that off before and it didn’t solve the problem.

i had this same problem and i took it to a mechanic i know who deals with tegs all the time.

He told me it was the cat rattling against the heat shield. he fixed it in 30 seconds.

try this.

bend the flange on the cat down on the drivers side on the rear corner. then drive around and see it that works.

I would totally try that… if I knew WHAT THE FLANGE WAS… I hope to have you explain a little more deeply… thanks dude!

ps… codenamezero- i don’t think this rattle has anything to do with homosexual tendencies… j/k

haha thats what www.dictionary.com is for.

if you look at your cat… it has a lip around the middle of it where the metal was folded over.

that is the flange. just bend the rear drivers side corner down a bit and see if that fixes it.
