How Do I Install Tow hooks?

Ive searched but came up with no answer on here or h-t.
basically i need to know how to go about installing a set of front and rear benen towhooks. I dont have any instructions. thanks an advance.

well i should say best way to do the front one, the rear is easy, just use the stock towhook.

the rear tow hook is really easy, the shim that comes with it you will put on the side of the stock tow hook and the benen tow hook itself on the otherside of the stock tow hook. then one of the bolts SHOULD go thru the stock tow hook going thru the shim and tow hook. and the other in the front of the stock tow hook.

for the front i believe you have to drill holes on the front bumper support i think.

thats what i thought, i was hoping to see some pics or something.

so everything got to you ok?

i would think the best way to do the front would be to pull the skin from the bumper support, drill a couple holes on the top or bottom(or all the way through) bolt it to the top or bottom of it and mark the inside of the bumper with a slot where to cut so that it can slide through

good luck. lets see a write up, since there are none to be found:)

yea i’ll prob make a writeup maybe this weekend or next when i got the time to do it.

yea man i got it, thanks.

if i had the instructions i wouldve scanned it and posted it on here for you but i was looking for it yesterday and i cant find it.

you got pics of it on how it looks in the front???

no i actually took it out because of the space in the garage i kept hitting the front tow hook on things on the garage

nice well thanks anyway, if u find it scan it to add to this thread.
im going to do a writeup w/ pics and shit when i get the time to install it. either saturday or next tuesday.

Here’s a link on how the install is done on the front>

If you look on page 1 in this thread you will see a pic of how the hook is installed in the rear. Good luck, post pics when done :burnout:

haha thanks, yea i saw that thread- thats how i realized how to put the rear on…
i also found another one on h-t using a civic, but im gonna make a g2 specific one.

ok well i attempted to do this lastnight-
im not sure how others have done this, or if others have done this- but the only place to mount this (92-93bumper) obviously is to have it come out the front grill opening, unless you go underneath the bumper however with a lip and drop thats definatly not possible. The problem is the location of the bumper support. Its lower then the opening so aside from using the included hardware you need additional spacers or washers to make it clear the opening. The bolts included also dont work because they are too short. Another issue is becuase you have to use spacers and have it raised off the frame of the car, the hook will not clear the a/c condensor.
I basically know what i need to do now and i will go into detail with pictures to show the steps to make a front tow hook work.

That sux that we have to use spacers and longer bolts, I’m waiting on my hooks to come in, I wonder if I will have the same issue with my 91 bumper. cant wait to see the pics.

ok well i got some extra time after work to complete the install so heres a little write up on what i did.
I apologize for the crappy night time photos- i’ll take new ones another night.
Also you will need to buy a couple of extra things in order to complete the job successfully.

This was a benen towhook installed on a 92-93 style front bumper, although im pretty sure its the same for the 90-91 and other tow hooks

TOOLS/PARTS NEEDED:

-floor jack
-drill with 1/2’’ drill bit
-2- 4 1/2’’ x 1/2’’ bolts with nuts.
-2- 5/8’’ bolts (used as spacers)
-sharpie marker
-a friend
-some blocks of wood if your car is as low as mine.

Your also going to have to make a slight bend in the a/c condenser- i doubt this will do anything to it, but i cant be sure concidering mine doesnt work anyway.

ESTIMATED TOTAL INSTALL TIME: 45min

(front tow hook install)
STEP 1: First you’re going to unbolt the front bumper. (4bolts behind coner lights,2screws on each fender) At this point your also going to want to take note of where you want to mount the towhook- I chose the passenger side.

STEP 2: this is where it helps to have a friend help you. Pull the bumper out just enough that you can feed the towhook through and mark on the bumper support where you want to mount it. It’s pretty important to be accurate because you only want to have to drill 2 holes- and you want to make sure that it doesnt hit the grill in the bumper

STEP3: Once you mark the location of the hook- fully remove the bumper and jack up the car enough to fit your drill under.

STEP4: Once you’ve drilled the two holes- your going need to use the 4- 5/8’’ nuts as spacers because the spaces provided wont allow the bumper to be properly bolted back on.Slip the 2- 4 1/2’’ bolts through the hook, and 4-5/8’’ nuts and tighten down. Your also going to have to bend the a/c condenser at this time a tad, to fit the hook underneath because it wont fit otherwise.

(THIS IS THE PIC DONE WITH THE SUPPLIED HARDWARE, NOT THE CORRECT WAY, IM JUST POSTING THIS PIC SO YOU CAN GET AN IDEA OF WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT)

STEP 5: carefully feed bumper through the towhook and bolt back on.

(rear tow hook install)
as listed above- use stock towhook- put tow hook on oneside, put the provided clamp on the otherside, feed bolts through and tighten down.

hope this helped.

and one more pic to whore out my car.
pre towhook

nice write up

Archive this for sho’. Thanks for the write up. I’m actually going to do that this weekend with a different type of tow hook.

wow it turned out pretty good even thou its on the bottom of the grill.

If you want the tow hook just for looks than that is an OK location, but if you ever need to tow your car and the tow truck driver uses that tow hook it will rip up the lower area of your radiator support. The best location for the front on would be attaching it to the actual bumper reinforcement.
