How to install a Hydraulic Transmission

Okay, this is pretty straightforward. Unfortunately I don’t have photos at this time. I just got back recently (as many of you know) from being deployed, and coupling that with an ORI (graded wargames) here at Offutt, I’m honestly pretty damned busy. However, here’s the prelimiary write-up, and when I get some more time I will do a more extensive (hopefully step-by-step provided the guy follows through with his plan) pictorial write-up. But this covers the important steps.

First things first!! I HIGHLY recommend doing this with the engine out of the bay. That’s how I did mine, and should you come to me with questions and you’re trying to do it with the engine in the bay, be prepared for me to go into asshole mode. I can’t answer questions if you’re doing it differently than me, because i hate discussing theory and then people getting pissed when it doesn’t work. I will relate MY experiences and my experiences only.

You’ll need to start out, obviously, with the transmission of your choice from a 94-up integra. LS/GS, GSR, B16 and ITR will all install the same. You’ll also need to go to either a boneyard or your local O’Reilly’s and source the following parts:

–Clutch Pedal assembly from any 94-up integra
–Clutch Master Cylinder from any 94-up integra
–All hardlines from a 94-up integra OR appropriate braided hose and fittings. Personally, i used the hardlines out of a wrecked car so I am not familiar with the correct size and length of various hose and fittings necessary. Perhaps one day i will upgrade, but what i have works just fine for me for now, and the lines, MC, and pedal assembly were 50 bucks from a local boneyard. 99 gsr, got rearended.

Finally, you’ll need to contact Place Racing at 626-334-3345 and tell them you’re putting a b-series hydro tranny into a 90-93 integra and you need the mount. As of today when I talked to them, it costs $157 and they have several in stock. mention g2ic and who knows you might get a deal.

The install is so straightforward once you get in that engine bay there’s really nothing left to say to be honest. Remove your stock clutch cable and pedal assembly as per the instructions in the Helms. If you don’t have the Helms, don’t email or IM me asking for instructions. BUY A HELMS. I have the .pdf scan on my computer for previewing a job, and when i’m actually working i have the printed version that i purchased with me. I suggest you do the same.

You’ll need to do a little bit of firewall drilling to attach the master cylinder in the engine bay; as soon as you get the stock pedal out and mock up the assembly you’ll see exactly what needs to be drilled. 10 minute job right there; very simple.

Attach and run the clutch lines along the firewall (if you use braided lines, you don’t have to follow the firewall, just make sure you have enough slack to work around anything resembling an engine that may later be there). With the Place Racing mount in place, put your engine and tranny in the car. attach the lines to the slave cylinder, fill the master, and bleed it all. You’re set to go!!

Any questions feel free to contact me via email or AIM: AirForceTeg

sweet man. to you.

I do what I can. zoomintegra <3 G2IC. :stuck_out_tongue:

good stuff…

how do you like it man?
was it worth it?

you know that feeling you get when you lean back in a chair, and for a split second you lean back too far, but just before you fall, you catch yourself?

it feels kinda like that.

I love it.

You didn’t mention how you “MADE” room for the the MC between the firewall and the shock tower. Thats all I need to know!

-Josh

i figured any self-respecting tuner has the most important tool laying around.

BFH foo!!!

seriously tho josh called me on an important aspect…you probably will need some lovin for the shock tower. it’s nothing too severe and it won’t interfere with the suspension at all. if you’re really that nervous about using a hammer on your shock tower (which i totally understand; chris is. he’s the guy i’m doing this for later on that i’ll hopefully be able to photodocument as we go) you can contact both wilwood and tilton. I believe they may have something for you (chris is taking care of this so I don’t personally know for sure) that will fit but is shorter to not interfere with the shock tower. www.wilwood.com for more info on them.

Good writeup. Does place racing make only the top mount or front x-member mount as well?

i’m working on getting a catalog from them (see the OT forum)…from what i understand they make mounts for just about ANYTHING you could want to do. which includes replacement mounts for the gen 2 integra. i was told on the phone today that they carry replacement mounts for almost every honda/acura car from 88 and up, along with hundreds of swap combinations.

just make sure you have enough slack to work around anything resembling an engine that may later be there

nice write up. thanks a lot.

Can’t you just buy the mount from Place Racing and run the Hasport adapter plate for the shift fork?

this swap is for those who want to COMPLETELY CONVERT to a FULLY HYDRAULIC clutch system.

obviously using an adaptor plate and keeping your clutch cable wouldn’t be an actual conversion now would it? that would be what we call half-assing the install.

What’s the benefit of converting it completely to hydro versus using the Hasport adapter? Isn’t it sometimes better to keep these simple in order lessen the chance of failure?

It’s cool that you did the conversion though, just a little hard tracking down all those parts. I would do it too if I was able to source all those parts.

You have any pics of how everything looks?

  1. First off, the adapter is huge and ugly. Second, have you ever driven a hydraulic transmission with a hefty clutch versus a cable tranny with a hefty clutch? I have. The difference is night and day. Pedal pressure is SO much lighter on the hydro than on the cable transmission. By using the adapter, as far as pedal action and pressure goes it’s still essentially a cable tranny. Hopefully this does not require further explanation.

  2. That’s why you go to a you-pull-it boneyard, preferably one that either specializes in imports or at least has a good stock. www.car-part.com is also a great place to go.

  3. Answered before it was asked. Go back and read the write-up again.

Around here, boneyards don’t really carry anything hydro, plus if they do, everything is already picked bone dry. Guess gotta start internet shopping and see what can be found.

I’ve driven alot of hydro tranny Tegs that run upgraded clutches, and they are pretty soft compared to what I’m used to. Guess it all depends on the person.

what to do about the speed sensor?

whenever you get a chance, post some pics so i can picture what to do.

cmon, its billet and billet is pretty!! And all the hydro trannies Ive driven have no clutch feel (ive driven quite a few). clutch feel is good. I’ll take my half assed hydraulic-cable tranny, thank you.

Also, you must be running only 3 mounts. Is the place racing one poly? be careful, with out the front mount there will be a lot of extra stresses on the stock rubber mounts.

your stock one bolts in.
