identify this transmission: 90-91 or 92-93?

Looking to buy this tranny that the guy claims is a b17 gsr. I know there is no way to tell for sure without opening it but at least I could eliminate it being a 90-91 by looking at the size of the input shaft. Can anyone tell in these pics if this is the bigger input shaft from a 92-93?

You can eliminate the chance of it being a 90-91 by reading the code on the sticker on the transmission. A YS1 would be a 92-93 transmission. Anything else and it is not. However both ls and gsr transmissions from 92-93 will be marked YS1.

Yea I know that but the sticker is no longer on the transmission. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m willing to take a chance if at least I can confirm that its a 92-93 transmission.

the splines on the shaft are different, not sure how many though.

its to bad honda never did mark these on the case like they did with the d-series

If you go to the section “Now about taking apart the trans”, the picture and labels show where there are two bolts that hold the detent balls for the shift forks. These bolts and detent balls are only on the 92-93 transmissions. The size of the shafts between 90-91 and 92-93 are almost the same, but like the previous poster said, the main difference is the teeth count. I don’t know which one has how many though.

Frozenrice is correct about the bolts for the shift forks. But the spline part is incorrect.

I’m not sure how this rumor got started but it seems to be rampant. You can count splines all you want and it’ll get you nowhere - because they have the exact same number. It is the diameter that is different, not the number of splines.

Ok thanks man. I’ll have to get him to send a pic from that angle. I wasn’t sure how much bigger the input shaft was on the 92-93 so I guess a picture wouldn’t be good enough to tell

You’re probably right. My bad for passing on bad info. I just made the assumption.

When I bought my current transmission, I measured the shaft and thought it was a match to my existing one. Was I ever wrong. At the time I didn’t have the space or time to do it myself so I hired someone to do it. When he went to swap it, the clutch didnt fit the shaft. Oops…luckily through some connections we source a 92-93 clutch on the spot and were back in business. I blame the ghetto method I used to measure the shaft LOL.

This document is a little hard to read because it has all pages listed one on top of the other but really they need to be side by side (imagine page 2 and page 3 side by side so that it’s one long table, automobile models on the left, clutch kits on the right).

90-91 has a 1" diameter shaft and 24 splines (clutch kit 08017)
92-93 has a 1 1/16" diameter shaft and 24 splines (clutch kit 08028)

If you measure the shaft you should be doing so with a set of calipers. IMO these are mandatory for the garage, I use them ALL the time.

Lol…I did use calipers, but they’re for woodworking on a lathe. Not quite as accurate as a real set of calipers haha. Hmmm i see a new tool for the tool box in the near future…

that looks like a 90-91 trans…the 92-93 has fatter splines if i remember i’m trying to find my pics…i actually posted about it in a thread on this forum before, but of course like all of g2ic if you’re not g2ic famous it gets no hits

YS1 92-93 trans

J1 B16 trans (splines are the same as a 90-91 LS transmission)

LOL! Hit that one on the head…

what about buying a 92 clutch from a local parts store take it back after to least eliminate the 90-91 trans

I have a 90-91 trans if anyone needs one also have a new clutch kit with flywheel

Wow yea it does look like a 90-91. I tried to get the guy to send me a pic of those two bolt holes but he hasn’t responded yet. I thought about that with the clutch too.

i might need one soon…depends on what happens w/ my trans that’s in the car now and some ones closer i’m looking at.

Ok he sent these two pics that look like those two bolts.

So does that look like a 92-93 transmission?
