Infinity 605cs Component Speakers

I bought the Infinity 605cs speakers off of ebay after doing some research on them. They retail around $269 CAD at most places, so that’s why I went to ebay first. A company in Ontario (Net Liquidation) sells many sets of these speakers (as well as the Infinity 652). They’re used, but this set had been tested to make sure they worked, and there was no visible damage to them. I knew they didn’t have any wires with them, and some pieces might be missing (but they did say that all the speakers and the x-overs were included and that’s all I cared about). I ended up winning the auction at around $70 USD shipped (around $100 CAD).

The only things missing besides the wires and screws were the flush mount kits for the tweeters, but the other mounting adapters were included (angled).

I took my door panels off as well as my knee bolsters and center console so that I could see where the best places to route things were (I should mention that I’m also running an Alpine deck with dual pre-outs and an Alpine 4x50 RMS amp under my driver’s seat). I found a perfect spot for the x-overs. When the center console is out, you can mount them directly in front of the shifter and the console clears it. Right in between the amp and the deck in my case!

The 45 degree mounting kits for the tweeters work great on the triangle pieces where the side mirrors mount. Easy to install because you just have to pop the triangle out and start drilling

The 6.5" mid-bass speakers are quite a bit beefier than the OEM speakers, so they don’t fit in the plastic surround that comes with the stock speakers. However, I knew I needed a spacer for the window to clear the speaker anyway, so I kept the surrounds and cut the back out of them, so they were essentially just a spacer. Then I just drilled holes in that for the speaker to mount to. It worked great – it doesn’t stick out anymore than the stock speakers, so the grill just pops right back on over top of them and it looks stock!

I used the old speaker wiring for the mid-bass speaker as suggested in previous threads about installing components. Then I just put a new wire from the x-overs to the tweeters.

I soon found out that one of my tweeters wasn’t working – a loose connection inside it that I can’t get to. So I contacted the company that I bought them from (since they said they had been tested and worked) to see about getting another tweeter. It’s a Sunday though so I haven’t heard back from them.

Once installed, I adjusted my deck (set the treble and bass center frequencies to suit the speakers, as well as the levels) and tried out a variety of CD’s. I was astonished. Even with one tweeter, it sounds 10x better than my old Sony Xplodes, and they were hooked up to the same amp I’m using now! Once I get both tweeters running, if I found the treble to be over-powering, I can simply move the positive wires for the tweeters to the next connection on the x-overs and it will put less power to the tweeters. A great feature included by Infinity.

I should also mention that I’m running Ultimate Titanium 6.5’s in the rear off the same Alpine deck as well that provide quite a lot of bass for their size and price.

Even though I don’t have everything tweaked perfectly and I’m only running one tweeter, I looove these speakers and I’m giving them a 9/10! great value! (especially for $100 CAD!)

IMHO non-OEM Infinity speakers have always produced excellent highs. I loved my RS’s and Kappas before switching to another vendor. Good deal

Infinity

I just picked up a pair of 6002i Reference speakers for the rear deck and they dropped in perfectly without any real modifications and no cutting. They sound great running off the stock head unit, which is soon to be replaced. Any suggestions? Looking for something that plays MP3 under $300 w/out all that LCD bs.

I’m looking to drop some component speakers in the doors now - taking a look at the 605s you mention as well as the REF6000CS which match the pair in my rear deck a little better. Thanks for mentioning the placement of the tweeters - I was thinking about that spot & wanted to know if it would be suitable.

Anywhere out there to get a sub enclosure for a 10" that’s made for the G2 without taking up a ton of room in the back. Need the space for golf bags, skis, and other crap & can’t be filling the trunk with a big box. Any recos on a well designed sub for the Integra would be much appreciated.

I just got the Infinity Reference 6000CS components at Circuit City for only 115 b/c a stocker doesn’t know how to read and put them with the 605’s that were on sale  o and unhookt how are those rear speakers? I need some new rear speakers and was looking to find something to match my front infinites and by the way I have a 10" in my trunk and bought the box from a local store and it only takes up about a third of the rear part of the trunk (were the trunk becomes narrower towards the seats) and it doesn’t stick out past where it is narrow. I can fit my lacrosse bag (about the size of a golf bag) in my trunk still with plenty of room so just check some local shops is what I would suggest.

What sub do you have? I’m looking into getting a 10" sub, and I’m not sure which one to get. I’ll be powering if off a 100 watt Alpine amp.

i got tons of audio equipment for sale in my thread. check it out. and infinitys are probably the best for a cheap price.

i also have pics at imagestation, link is on the page.

Hey I’ve got a 10" Alpine Type R run by a Alpine 300w mono D series amp. W/ Just a 100 watt amp I dunno if that can push it to it’s potential cause Type R’s need power (like I don’t think my 300w does enough for it) but it’s a great sub it hits w/ the best of them but isn’t overdone.

Does anyone have any experience with the Alpine Type S or Type E subs?

infinity makes a good product, I used to have some infinity reference components. I mainly just don’t like their tweeters. They are too much for my ears, WAY too harsh for me. I recently got a set of cdt classic components. They retail for $300 or so, but were on sale for $150 shipped. They are amazing. The tweets are silk dome and perfect for my tastes. The mid drivers are huge and have the sound to back them up. At the sale price…probably the best comp set out there in that price range.

I’ve also heard great things about the JL comps, although they are closer to $200 I believe.

John: I’d definitely shy away from that Alpine type R if you plan on sticking w/ your amp. From what I hear they are VERY power hungry and that the specs given for them are a bit low, more of a minimum acceptable level and that they’ll take a lot more. Are you looking for sound quality? or more overall volume? check out www.caraudioforum.com Its a great place to learn more about audio. I recently got an image dynamics 10, I’ve only had it for a few days, but so far I love it. It’d need more power than you have though. Really 100rms isn’t much for a decent sub.

How much bass do you think I can get from a pair of 6 x 9’s in boxes, with 40 watts per speaker?

My current setup is Pioneer DEH 5500, Alpine SPS 170A up front off the amp, Infinity 6002i in the rear off the head unit, and some old Pioneer 6 x 9’s in the rear, off the amp. I think it sounds decent, but I wouldn’t mind a little more bass at lower levels. If I turn up the bass boost on the 6 x 9’s they don’t sound any better. I have it set on 6 out of 12.

My amp is an Alpine MRP-F240, 40 watts by 4, or 100 watts by 2. I just bought this 2 weeks ago, so I still another 2 weeks if I want to return it. I’m trying to decide if I’m better off buying an ok 10" inch sub, probably a JL Wo, some decent 6 x 9’s, buying some components, or returning the amp for a more powerful one, and getting a nice sub. I really can only afford to put around $200 in the system right now, and I really only want to have 1 amp.

I’m looking for a very clean sound with decent bass, but I don’t need it to be that loud. I never even turn up my radio more than 40 out of 62.

Hope this is clear on what I’m trying to get advice on.

thanks,

John

jmw416: i just got rid of an alpine type e 12, it was pretty fucking loud for 1 sub and the right power to back it up with a “600w” peak power, though you can never believe these ratings. at lower levels, the sub is great, when it comes to pounding, it will pound low and loud, but did have trouble in the real low bass. but for a 60 buck sub, its not bad.

hey, i was thinking of getting those cdt cl-61a at thezeb.com , are they really good? compare to infinity kappas 60.5cs or the infinity 6000cs?? i narrowed my search to these

i love highs from the tweeter, but i never listened to those infinity so i dont know how harsh they are… and i dont know if it is worth to pay a bit more for the kappas 60.5cs instead of the 6000cs

can you tell me how the cdt fit in the door? do we need to cut the speaker basket?

i really love good highs from the tweeter, clear and bright and loud at the same time, so do you recommend the cdt?? btw i’m going to mount the tweeter right next to the door mirror

I really don’t have enough experience with the newer infinity’s to give you much input about them. Audio is so subjective that its very hard for me to help you out. Personally the cdt’s are plenty loud as far as the highs go. But I know there are other people out there who would pass them up because they want a different sound. So, its really hard for me to tell if you’d be happy with them or not. My old (5yr old) reference comps (silk dome tweets) really hurt my ears at higher volumes. I couldn’t listen to it loud for very long before I had to turn it down because of the tweets, of course it does depend on the type of music, and you can always compensate somewhat by tuning the treble on the head unit. Now, with my cdt’s they can play loud and for long periods of time and my ears don’t get fatigued at all. There are still times when due to volume, a certain song…or whatever that the tweets will be a bit much, but its rare. And I have the tweets set on the even setting, they can even be attentuated a bit (not sure if thats the right term).

How do they fit? They’re big… You cannot use the stock basket, they just plain old don’t fit. Plus the stock basket is piece of crap anyway. I took some 5/8" or 3/4" (don’t remember which) mdf and made some mdf rings to mount the speakers to. They were needed to give me the clearance needed as well as have a hole big enough for the speaker to be able to sit in. Its a close fit, but they do fit…no clearance issues w/ the door glass or the door panel or speaker grill.

so you had to built your own mdf ring to make the speaker fit?

can we just cut a hole into the stock basket and put the speaker into it?

yes, i had to make my own mdf ring…but its super easy. All you need is a jigsaw.

No, you can’t just cut a hole in the bottom of the basket. Like I said…the stock basket just plain old doesn’t work. The hole is not larger enough for the speaker to sit down into. The basket on the speaker is just too big. these are very large mid drivers, excellent low end from them. I can’t say for sure…but from all the infinity sets i’ve heard, the lows/mids on the cdt’s are much better.

do you have a pic of how your speaker are mounted, so i can have an idea on how it would fit…

no, no pics. but its really straightforward. Use the cardboard pieces in the box for your speakers for templates. When the speaker is boxed it sits down in a hole, use this hole to trace the inner diameter of the mdf ring. Then for the outside it just needs to be large enough so
-the speaker has room to screw down to it
-you can screw the ring into the door
-its strong enough to not fall apart

So now you have yourself an mdf ring about 1" or so wide. You may need to put little “ears” on it so that the mdf goes out far enough to reach the spots where it gets screwed to the door.

Overall its really simple, its just an mdf ring, not too complicated. When you get the speakers and are you there trying to install them and make the ring just use some common sense and logic and you’ll be fine.

thanks for your help…
i will probably get the cdt cl-61a, too many good reviews on them, so i will try them out…

i found a site that show how to do the mdf with pics, it is for an mr2 and looks pretty easy…

http://www.mr2.nl/tips/speakersindeuren/deurspeakers.htm

where did you get your mdf piece? at home depot??
another question, did you put anything on the back of the speaker? any dynamat stuff or paper foam??

yup, thats an mdf ring, pretty basic.

yes, you can get the mdf at home depot. only problem is you’ll probably have to buy a 4x8 sheet of mdf, which will probably be $15-$20 depending… You may be able to find some scrap or a smaller piece like a 4x4, but maybe not. You’ll have to look around. Another option would be to have an audio shop make them…but i’m sure that’d be more than $20.

What do you mean by putting foam or dynamat on the back of the speaker? why would you put something like that on the speaker? i’m a bit confused as to what you mean? I did put a foam gasket type thing on the back of the mdf ring…although this was probably useless.

i mean, does your door vibrate with those speaker, they look pretty poweful… so i thought you have to put something on your door, like a foam or something similar like those noise dampering such as dynamat to reduce the vibrating from the door
