Installed YS1 tranny, Centerforce DF clutch and Clutchmasters 7.5 lb. flywheel

Nice work Jason and Dan! Glad you like the flywheel Jason. I can’t wait to get my tranny back and put in my Clutchmasters Flywheel and Stage 3 Clutch Kit!

Peace.

My GS-R YS1 on my LS is 4,500rpms at 80mph.

Hey guys, I should clarify that I am running the JDM YS1, and yes, it is a little different than the USDM YS1. The first gear is geared shorter and the fifth gear is geared longer than the USDM YS1. Other than that they are identical.
Oh, and what Dan said is very true. He wouldnt let me in his house for right around a minute. He just stood there and stared at my manchops, hehehe. Its all good though, he is trying to grow something on his face too, I think it was in the shape of a pigeon, hehehe

cspeed - Yeah, I have to give it a little gas as the rpm’s drop back to idle or it will drop so fast that it will die. I am just been using the gears to decelerate lately. Oh, and the ITR flywheel is 13 lbs.

AMERIKAN - Thanks, but I think I will pass up on the dinner, hehehe
If you get the time I wouldnt mind you writing up whatever it was you wrote before. Hell, I had to write this whole topic over again…

DAY U IZ - This tranny has been sitting in Dan’s garage for a while now. Jeff already has another JDM YS1 in his teg, and he is already grinding 3rd again…

Shea & Ive - You guys can test it out as soon as I get it all broken in. I want to see my car in motion anyway, especially with Shea behind the wheel. I want to see how far you can push my car (without rolling it of course ;))

G2Guru - Thanks Dan, and thanks for getting the pics up. I wasnt able to get on last night to check them out due to the birthday bar run

redlineintegra - Hey Steve, that is just one of 3 acura manuals we had there…
The tranny is actually a lot easier to work on than it looks. I have been thinking about it for the past few days and realized that it is pretty simplistic inside. I would be confident at rebuilding one myself now. You just gotta get in there and tear away at it once and you will know what I am talking about.

DP24 - I cant remember what it is at 80, but it is 4000 rpm’s at 75 mph. My fifth gear is longer than DAY U IZ’s because I have the JDM YS1, not the USDM YS1…

93B18 - Your right Leo, I like it a lot, but I think the tranny and clutch have a lot to do with that too
I saw your tranny at Dan’s while I was down there, think you got enough packing material in that box?? hehehe.
I hope you dont mind, but I had to take some parts off of it to finish my rebuild… j/k

Alright, that should do it for all of your guys’ answers for now. Keep them coming…

Later,
BR

Nice job - x it up!

I’m too impressed, Jas - well done!

So is driving Dan’s car as exquisite as it looks?

Make sure you let us know how the flywheel does when you 'cross this weekend.

Brah, I’m even more stoked to check out your car. The 'chops are fat, btw.

Peace,

dluck

Damn Jason… Those Chops are getting wild! hehe… are you saving those up for WCM2002? I understand why the cop pulled you over now about the headphones…sooo classic!! hehe… Nice job with the install and photo’s guys…

Dan, I’m sure with all those pics you can already publish a book much better than the helms :stuck_out_tongue:

dumbluck - Thanks… And yes, driving Dan’s teg is actually a lot better than it looks. There is something about having a shift point of 9400 rpm’s that makes you go hmmm… Oh, and it is still pulling hard at that rpm too.
I will let you know how it goes on sunday too, I just need to get these break-in miles done and over with first…
So, are you going to be at the meet on the 26th?? If so, you can check it out there.

Eric - Thanks Eric, and I dont know if I will have the chops for the meet. I grow my hair out every fall/winter and then shave my head and go clean shaven for spring/summer. I have been growing them out since early fall, and no I havent trimmed them

I just went to test it out and I am just under 4250 rpm at 80 mph. Like I said, fifth gear is longer than the USDM YS1…

Damn. Thats 250rpms less than mine. What is your 1st and 5th gear ratio? Is the final drive still 4.400?

Dan & BR, what repair manual has detailed assembly schematics and instructions for the tranny?

I’ve heard from some that breaking in a clutch properly is to drive it like you would normally.I’m not saying if this is right- i’ve just heard it and know people who drove it normally and the clutch was fine.

anyways- i think that 5th gerar ls swap would be more useful on a y1 tranny, where in my case 85mph is 4900rpm. the ys1 tranny i wouldn’t touch- it’s the best cable clutch tranny made for b series engines hands down- have fun at the track man

wow very nice, btw guys how light is my stock 90 LS Flywheel?

btw… new tranny going in on tuesday… couldnt take the gear grinding any longer
Ryan:shock:

Anyone have any experience with 13lb flywheels?? I’m looking for one of those?

I’ve been looking at CM and Exedy, and leaning more towards the Exedy. Maybe I’ll change my mind now…

Dan you are no dought The G2GURU every time I turn around you have just worked on another member’s car. You really help make this club worth wild. I just wish I lived near you.I have my money together to build my motor. If shipping wouldn’t kill me I would get with you and see how much you would charge for a B17A rebuild anyway on behalf of everyone here I just want to thank you for being here and helping so many people out. I enjoy the photo’s you post after you work on someones car.

Teg92: I use the Helms (Factory Service Manual). It has a very detailed breakdown of all of the transmission internals as well as clearances, replacement parts…etc. You can pick it up if you don’t already have one at http://www.helminc.com . They run $60 for the repair manual.

Gen2LS/VTEC: That is not the way to properly break in a clutch. You need to keep too much pressure off of the clutch. That means no dropping the clutch, and no high rpm shifts. Centerforce and many other after market companies recommend 500 “stop and go” miles. Highway miles don’t count because you aren’t using your clutch. Avoid riding the clutch…although this is bad even when the clutch is broken in. And about the Y1, it actually has longer gearing that the GSR YS1, JDM YS1, and the JDM S1. It’s shorter than the USDM LS transmissions though.

Ryan: The stock LS flywheel weighs in at 18lbs. OUCH. The ITR flywheel weighs in at 14lbs. And my stock lightened & balanced flywheel weighs in at 13lbs. A 13lb. flywheel makes a pretty big difference…although sometimes I wish I would have gotten the Toda 9lb. flywheel. YUMMY!!!

NC-B17A: Thanks for the kind words. I enjoy working on cars and helping people out. Meeting cool people is just an added bonus. And if you ever need help, obviously don’t hesitate to ask. If I don’t know the answer chances are I know someone that does. Thanks again.

dan- the ys1 and y1 have diff gearing and overall the ys1 is closer but the 5th on the y1 is closer thqan the 5th on the y1

Hey Jason & Dan

This is a great thread. ARCHIVETHIS. I look forward to reading the product review in the future and driving your car.

I have a quick question. I frequently miss 2nd gear and squeeze out a mean grind. A time or two or three a week when I’m getting after it I miss this shift. This is just me being impatient and popping the clutch before I actually get it in gear. I know, I know, duh, I’m lame. Since I’m grinding while shifting into 2nd does that mean my 2nd gear is likely excessively worn and therefore it would be wise to replace in a rebuild?

My stock clutch has 102K miles on it and I’m thinking in the near future I’d like to do this exact mod less the Ysi tranny (I’d keep and rebuild my LS). So I’d like to slap on a lighter flywheel, high performance clutch, & possibly a tranny rebuild while I’m at it. Let me know if either of you guys would be interested in helping me out w/ this in the spring/summer.

Peace out and thanks fellows!

Leif

Leif, I’m always up for another project. But be sure to let me know a month or two in advance. My summer gets pretty busy with car work.

Leif - It is probably fine, just work on getting it into gear faster from now on. Those parts arent cheap, even with my discount…
I would be down for helping you out when you do the upgrade. I would suggest a trip down to Dan’s to do it though. He doesnt even need a manual, he just starts ripping into the engine bay and everything comes out just fine… He is too good at working on these things… Either way though, we could either do it in my garage or I could go down to his place with you and help out down there… It is up to you.
Let me tell you though, that is a LONG job. We spent a total of around 12 hours on mine… Although, I think that is a new record for that swap, rebuilding a tranny, and torqueing everything down to spec

Dan, if you want a real challenging project I got one for you. Try to find some dirt in Leif’s super clean Teg there.
