i have a freshly rebuilt b17 with bout 240 miles since rebuild …only have clutch, intake and exhaust(no cat)its pretty much stock …but i want to go boost with 7-8 psi im willing to piece a turbo kit together .but my question is is it dangerous to run boost with stock internals? im pretty much on a budget…i also plan oon getting it tunned so yeah lmk ppl…any other info ytou need lmk so this thread can work well for both i and all of you…maybe it may help other wondering the same thing
no, but it’s all in the tuning. do leakdown, and compression tests.
good luck, and the blinking SEARCH button is your friend. also, check out the turbo guide at the top of this forum.
Running boost on stock internals is not necessarily a bad thing but it can be if you dont have your car tuned right or if you are trying to run more boost than your engine can handle. Just use common sense and DO YOUR REASEARCH. There are lots and lots of people that run turbo/nitrous on a regular basis with no problems on stock internals. Its all just in how you go about tune’n it. Just be reasonable with it.
An example would be…lets say that you know for a fact that you car on stock internals even with tune’n cant handle more than 8psi if that is your limit then dont try and go over…Yes you may be able to run higher boost but it wont last…maybe for a little bit but over time your engine will eventually give out. Good luck.
kool thnx for the help guys…i was kinda hoping it was just going to depend on the tune …bump for more ppl and their .02 cents
bump hoping to boost real soon
i was boosting 14 psi on 57 trim t3/t4 turbo for 10 months no probs! all in the tuning… sold the car still running just upgrade the rod bolts
A built motor is just as weak as a stock motor with a bad tune
kool bump…
Your going to continue to get the same answers.
Check up on how the motor is.
compression check, leak down etc…
ARP rod bolts is a must.
And Tuning is 100% everything.
it looks like everyone is saying to beef up the rod bolts. If so doesn’t that mean new bearings. Doesn’t new bearings mean taking apart the bottom end. this is why i didn’t change the rod bolts in my ls/vtec. its a basic setup so i figured it wouldn’t hurt anything with a rev limiter set at 7.5k
Could you low boost a completly stock bottom end? Not on my car but a ls motor?
very much so…most people say a good stopping point for COMPLETELY stock internals is 8psi if u can tune. Anyone who has gone boost has either been taught or learned the hard way that your whole setup depends on the tune.
I run 8psi daily and I’m going to run 10psi at the track on sundays starting today. Bone stock internals b18a1 minus the JG303 cams. It’s all in the tune, and that I can do well
if you are going to boost your b18, it would be wise to freshen up the motor…hate to see boost finish off your motor becuase it had an exhisting problem before you installed the turbo…
Myteggy, You tune? What programs?
Could you help a fellow G2IC who also lives in
TN? (Not right now, but once im boosted)
i booseted my da9 with 250,xxx kms didnt change a thing on the motor (again its all about tuning)
she made 235 whp at 10psi on a 57 trim t3/t4
just boost your car! if you dont have the money for another motor / tranny if you fuck urs up then you shouldnt be thinking about boosting until u save up a bit more
well stock clutch prolly wont hold the power but i guess you could pull off a low boost with it
b17 has higher compression so u wont be boosting as much as the b18 guys are. with a good tune detonation shouldn’t be a problem. is all in the tune and the setup.
theres no way a stock clutch will hold cuz a stock clutch wouldnt hold my 50 shot of nitrous. IF your just looking for something to hold the power but just need something for the time i would get an XTD stage 3 clutch off ebay. Its just like the ACT clutch just not as much meat on it. But it grabs like theres no tomorrow.
ur stock clutch didnt handle a 50 shot?? thats wierd my stock clutch handled 10 psi for 3months (when i took it out it still had the stamp that it came with) until disaster stroke…23psi spike from hell!!! yea it was fun for the 5hrs that it lasted. I was spiking alll night…then on my way home i pushed it leaned out at 23psi then the car shut off…i cracked the sleeve. the motor had 220K i blew it cuz of SICK boost creep that motor was a champ…and yea the next day i went and got another motor. If you go boost always keep a safety block JUST in case
Hey all. Hope I’m not intruding. just a couple of thoughts.
I’ve found that many of the clutches that are available out there go by the amount of torque and not just power. If you’ve driven the clutch to its end with simply a 50 shot, it is time to upgrade that before looking at the rod bolts. if rod bolts are a concern, its best to just get the aftermarket rods themselves.
you can just the rods shot peened for $60…
