ITR tranny internals in a LS YS1?

I’m going to be buying a ITR swap in the next 2 months and I had a few questions for those of you that know a thing or two about trannies…

If I get the whole swap, can I take the internals out of the ITR tranny and put them in my YS1 cable tranny? Money isn’t an issue, so I was going to do it that way or find a GSR YS1 and rebuild it…whichever is easier. None of this Hydro to cable conversion bullshit.

Let me know what you guys think.

-Nick

nick, yes you can put the itr internals in the ys1 case. Tri (Vtec-Da9) has this setup right now. .J. did it for him. I’m not exactly sure what it all entails, but i think it requires a little grinding to get it to fit…but from the sounds of it nothing major.

if you do end up putting the itr gears into your ls ys1 do you think i could get some of the ys1 internals from you? I would like to get a 5th gear set as well as some good synchros for at least 3rd gear.

I’m doing the same thing. I"m taking my LS YS1 case down to .J. and the ITR tranny, he’s gonna modify them to fit. Basically it requires a lot of grinding and the rest of it is just reassembling.

Thanks guys.

Colin, yeah you can have the internals from my YS1. The only thing wrong with it is… it grinds slightly into 2nd and it also pops out of 2nd. Other than that, it’s in great condition.

If any of you see a GSR YS1 with no problems and low miles, let me know and I’ll grab it ASAP.

-Nick

i have a perfectly working LS tranny, and i guess once I get the internals out you can have whatever parts you need from it, other than the 5th gear.

awesome nick! i was originally gonna swap some parts from my stock tranny onto the gsr ys1 that i have now…but by the time i tore them both apart i realized that the parts wouldn’t swap. the 89-91 and 92+ trannies are surprisingly different both internally and externally. yeah, so nick just shoot me an email or give me a call when you pull the old internals out and i’ll take 'em off your hands

art, are you gonna do any of the work on the tranny yourself? I’d definitely recommend it. I had a lot of fun taking mine apart and putting them back together, i learned a lot too. Hopefully i put it back right! lol. we’ll see in a couple days (crosses fingers)

just curios your signature says 160 hp at the wheels so u must have a pretty built ls motor , why would u spend 4000-5000 for itr swap when the itr throws down around 165-170 to the wheels the itr has alot more potential but its alot of money , and your about type r power right now just get the short geared tranny ,i had a y1 lsd b16 tranny with my ls motor it was the best mod i did for the money for the ls

me?

i don’t know if you mean me, but i had a 142whp LS, but now that engine’s gone and I have a b20b in it’s place.

the jdm itr b18c is going in my other black da

the b20b i think has 8.8 compression, which I may possibly boost in the future. but for now I just want a nice daily driver b20b that zips me around town and occasionally around cones. i’ll just build the b18c for the track.

he was talkin about nick. 92Lsr: if i remember correctly he’s got a Gude head package on a pretty much otherwise stock motor, could be a little different now. My guess is he’s going for the itr motor cause it has TONS more potential.

I’m switching the setup because of a few reasons…

#1… I want a stock idle again. Not that there is anything wrong with what I have now, it just gets too much attention in the wrong way just SITTING at a stop light.

#2… I got pulled over for “No Front Plate”, the pig popped my hood, wrote me up for my Kamikaze 4-1’s, my Vortech AFPR and fuel guage and now my car is 100% illegal ( got a free trip to the ref). If I get pulled over, the car goes in impound.

#3… Like Colin said, tons more potential in the b18c5. I have almost maxed out the LS in terms of reliabilty and power output, the only thing left to do is bulletproof the bottom end and put expensive parts where I haven’t yet. \

#4… My goal in 5 years is to have every motor that will fit in my car, sitting in my garage completely rebuilt. ZC, B16a1, B16a2, B16b, B17a1, My Gude B18a1, B18b B18c1, B18c4, B18c5, H22. I like to collect things and I like to have things others don’t. There are a few more motors that I could list, but those are the main ones I’m looking for.

Later guys.

What’s wrong with having these items?? Surely not for a fuel guage???

they probably don’t have EO numbers which make them carb legal. Here in cali they are strict about stuff. You either have to have a CARB legal sticker on there or you have to have the EO (executive order—i think thats what it is) numbers so they can look it up and see if its legal.

Update:

Got pulled over again last night! Modified exuast and excessive speed ( I know I was only going 75 or so…wrote me up for 80+) led to the hood being popped once again for our courageous law enforcement team. He immediately went to the AEM cam gears then to the fuel guage once again. Next, on to the AEM intake ( “HA! ***er, I got a sticker for that!) and then to the Kamikaze 4-1’s. He finished up at the RSR catback, complimenting that " you must not have a cat in this thing or your running REAL rich.” Both, officer. Well, lets just say that I thought my baby was gone and on its way to having the fully molded Black Widow kit torn off by some Drunk- Ass tow truck driver.

Guess what? The guy lets me walk with a 80+ mph speeding ticket, stating, " You look like a good kid, not the trouble maker type."

So, now the need for a ITR motor is even greater. Also, I think I’m gonna go back and buy me another 87 grey 4 runner. I never got pulled over in that thing. Time for the teg to sit pretty for the rest of it’s life eh?

Later guys. Be careful…especially in So Cal.

if you’re wanting a completely legit motor the itr might not be what you need nick. Getting the ref to pass you may pose quite a problem, it depends on the ref you get. Technically you have to run hydro tranny and you have to run obd2. Both conversions don’t look like fun. They may even go so far as to tell you have have to swap gas tanks!! (there is some sensor or emissions thing that is different). Like i said, it really depends on the ref. Getting the bar sticker is why i chose a b17a for my swap… since it came in G2’s the only thing i had to change was from obd0 to obd1 which hasn’t been too bad. I had originally wanted an ls/vtec, then a poorman’s itr…both would have been failed by the ref immediately.

You know what Colin, you’re absolutely right. The ONLY problem I would have with the B17a swap would be needing a motor from 1993 only. I can’t do a 92. This whole setup would eliminate MANY headaches such as the tranny problem. However, I think it would be kinda hard to find a low mileage GSR motor equivilent to that of a 99 or 00 ITR. How much did you pay for your B17 swap? And, was it complete? Also, where did you get it? The link you posted earlier showed no B17’s.

I figure I could get a B17, rebuilt the motor and the tranny for the same cost of an ITR swap. Anyone think not? Another idea I was throwing around was getting the B17, then putting the ITR head on it. The only difference is the dual intake and exhaust valves right? Remember, I have an LS. The closest I get to a Vtec motor is my buddies 99 Si… and boy is it fun. Not near as much torque, but I love hitting Vtec in that bitch.

Colin, by the way, I was wondering if I could come and check out your b17 one of these days. I wanted to check out the tranny visually so I know what’s what. Besides, I’ve never seen a B17 in person… Man, after typing this, that’s definitely what I’m gonna do. Besides, not too many people have them right?

nick, you can get any 92-93 gsr motor, just tell them its from a 93. They won’t check the block number, and i really doubt they actually have the resources to trace it back. The electronics are the same so they won’t know the difference.

well, i first purchased a b17a w/ 125k on it (longblock and ecu) for $1200. Later on i lucked out and found a totalled 92 gsr for $700…in the end for towing costs and what not it was more like $900. I really lucked out and its really the only reason i’m able to do my swap.

Well, the motor isn’t running yet, it won’t start, i’m not getting any spark, and i need the car running for school tomorrow! Any chance you wanna drive up to temecula and let me test mey dist on your car? hehe, i’m sorta joking but seriously if you’re not doing anything today it’d save me some confusion and maybe some $$.

b17a and itr heads are the same except:
-itr has slight port/polish
-itr has beefier cams and valvetrain

To me you seem like the type of guy who’ll be forking out for headwork and some serious cams in the future anyway. Because of that i’d keep the b17a stock and just upgrade it later with stuff thats better than the itr components. It’ll be cheaper in the long run…but it depends on what you have planned.

let me know if you have any questions, i’m becoming fairly familiar w/ b17 stuff, so just let me know. Give me a call (909 764 6742) and whenever i get it running you can come by and check it out. Oh, and i’ll be living in SD soon, so we should meet up.

Sick. Umm… about me coming up there today, I’ll most likely be at work until at least 6 or 7 tonight although we’re so busy that I’m on the computer this much. So, you might be out of luck for today.

What distributor are you using? I was under the impression that Vtec distributors don’t work on LS motors and vice versa. Then again, my last string of info came from a friend with a b16 that has never turned over. I could be wrong.

Whether it’s running or not, I’d still like to see it. The only one I have ever seen is Loc’s. I rode in his GSR as well and that was the first time I felt an Integra go through gears that quick. I dunno, I guess I’m weird like that.

I have an off topic question for you… I’m an Installer at Tweeter in Encinitas, and I was wondering if you have been in our Temecula store. I was going to work on getting a transfer up there IF they have a car Install department. No one here can seem to answer that for me. There’s a lot of kids around there that get cash from the casinos and they are more than willing to use it to impress their friends.

The only free days I have are thursday and friday, other than that I’m in the bay for 12 hrs a day. Let me know when you’re moving and we’ll figure something out. Late.
