keep the turbo during winter ?

i live in Quebec city and i really wanted to put the turbo kit on my car. Im still struggling wheter i wait for summer or not…

does anybody know anything that can go wrong for an aftermarket turbo setup during winter (temperature sometimes go below 25 celcius or -13 fahrenheit)
its a T3 and with 28inch FMIC

<—curious too.

probably the only thing would be that with air that cold you could run lean. i guess just have a really conservative tune ready, thicker oil and you’ll be fine. just my .02

talking about the oil, on very cold start, oil may have some difficulty to get to the turbo ??

try to find a 0w-40 synthetic or 0w30, that way you have AWESOME cold start up weight and you still have a nice thick protection for tubo and engine parts when the engine warms up

I dont know too much about aftermarket turbo kits on the b18 b16 engines, but Ive been shopping for a Talon TSI AWD, my buddies all have them with 16g 18g and 20g turbos, they run them all winter. None of them have had a problem. they just have to use the SAFC and dataloger to tune the fuel system so it runs right in subzero temps. Just make sure you are running a good oil, and dont do any hard pulls untill the car is warmed up. Might want to set the turbo timer to 1min + aswell.

for cold starts just have a switch set-up on the fuel pump, crank the car untill the oil light goes out then turn the pump on and start it up. 10w-30 is the thickest I’d go when the temp drops below freezing.

i would be worried about the temp diffenece. like the very cold air coming in contact with the hot metal of the turbo, that can cause cracking

I would think it would be just fine as long as you use a thinner oil then you do during the summer, there are all kinds of cars and trucks that come stock with a turbo and you dont see them parking it during the winter, I think as long as you use a thinner oil like 5w30 and you let it properly warm up before boosting (which you should do all year round) it will be just fine

Thinner oil, protect your FMIC from road debris and make sure your air filter cant get saturated from rain/snow.

back to life,

some people say thinner oil some say thicker…

whats better?

its getting to be that time of the season…

0w-40 or 5w-30 in the winter

10w-30 to 15w-40 in the summer.

xenocron you are a good guy , you finally answerd my question

the colder oil is, the thicker. therefore, for cold weather use thinner oil and for warm weather use thicker oil.

I would stay 10w-30. thats what honda says to put in it. They never steered me wrong.

Honda recommended that for an NA motor, not a turbo one.

^ indeed

I run 5w-30 in the winter, 10w-30 in the summer.

The suggestion about putting in a fuel cut is a good idea, but I do have a question about that, is it bad to let the injectors dry fire during that time the fuel is off and the engine is turning over that long?

^^what do you think your injectors do when your on decelaration…
