At random times my key gets stuck after I turn off the ignition. So far, it happens only in the Winter. I have a 1993 Integra GS and it is an automatic. I understand the ignition tumbler might be bad or the position indicator switch isn’t “telling” the lock to let go. At first guess I would try WD40 or graphite, but the key comes out normally with out drag when not stuck. I’d welcome any insight.
you know you have to push the key in to turn it all the way off right?? if so, then i was just checkin!
with automatic’s they have a cold weather issue – they don’t want to go into reverse or park right away.
Sometimes you need to nail the gas/brake or just wait for it to engage in park before you can take the key out.
i have the same fun with my 93 auto in the “winter time”
in georgia, this wouldn’t happen until it dropped below 40, now here in miami it dropped below 60 and my car started hanging onto the key.
i let the car sit in park for a few more seconds and then the key comes out no problem.
I have to wait for the ‘P’ to light up before I can take it out.
I also have to wait for the ‘P’ to light up before I can take the key out, which leads me to believe that lubricating the tumbler will do no good. Usually I only have to wait 20 or 30 seconds for the key to finally release, but sometimes it can be much longer than that. I think it gets worse not only when it is cold out, but when it is cold and moist, i.e. really humid.
Acura told me that it’s a faulty sensor or something of that sort in the shifter mechanism…
If the sensor is faulty, is it a design defect, or does it simply need to be repaced. I don’t see the logic in getting it replaced if it is a design defect, unless Acura has fixed this specific defect in their new replacement part/sensor.

91 LS :auto: I really hate it. I will be getting out and the damn thing wont let go. I sit there and beat the hell out of it with my fist. Everytime it does it, I want a new car even more.
be nicer to your car man
blades13432: and you think beating the hell out of it will HELP the problem? Anger management, bro!
Its a switch in the shifter mechanism that hangs onto the key. You need to replace the gear selector to fix it. I had the dealer do it for me, and it was $250. If you are a do-it-yourself’er-type, then be my guest!
Late…

It was one morning that I did that. I was at Starbucks and I was already late, and pissed off. I am not putting more money in to that piece of crap. I am going to get rid of it soon. BMW 323ic or BMW MINI Cooper Type S
Thanks for the following info, atleast now I know what I am up against!

yea i have the same problem. it gets really annoying when you’re tryiin to hurry up and get into the house cuz its so cold outside.
Most of you guys can fix your problem your self for CHEAP… There’s a sensor right under the interior plastic bit that covers the shift knob… remove the two plastic kick plates above the driver/pasenger feet… then remove the center console. Under there, below the shift stick, on the passenger side is a plastic sensor piece… it’s like a white plastic piece… about 7 inches long with solder points on the edge of it… you cant miss it… unplug 2 lil plugs, undo two screws, and take it to the dealership… you’ll pay like 30-50 bux… (canadian… eh…) and they’ll mumble something about how you should install it with your auto shifter in NEUTRAL… i suggest doing that…lol… after that… your frozen sensor-P light wont come on-car wont let the key out until the p comes on-problems will dissapeer… helped a friend do it… and he hasn’t had any problems since…
i forgot the name of the part… but my description is pretty good… (well… at least I think it is… heh) if someone has the helms auto tranny chapter, i could point it out… took a whole 20-30 mins to do…
peace
part 4
