lots of white smoke, what to do?

ok… i have a t3 turbo setup… pushing 9 psi… on a jdm b18b… i wanted to keep it a sleeper so all my piping is kept inside as well as the intercooler… i went with a mitsu. gsx intercooler and it is placed wher my battery was at. i would share some pics but i dont know how to post them on here… so i am trying to do my best here. i went to the shop wher they hooked it all up for me and they said its probably the engine not getting enough cool air because of my intercooler being inside instead of outside. thus causing the gas to boil inside my fuel rail and that is why its smoking lots of white smoke like the bat mobile or the nightrider… take your pick. i personally thought it was the tune. im using a super afc 2 and it seemed great for a while… but now he says… that they could put a bigger intercooler infront and that would help it out alot… and also that they could check my turbo because they think its shot… but its boosting great… so i dont know whats up… and or what to do… i need some opinions on what to do. either pay them again… to put the intercooler infront and rebuild my turbo ( if it needs it) or keep searching to see what the hell it really is…

anyhelp would be greatly appreciated… thank you…

white smoke is most likely a head gasket issue…take off your radiator cap and see if your coolant has oil in it.

hth…

+1.

I can come up with no logical reason why not having a robust enough intercooler would cause white smoke in your exhaust. Lack of cooling of the intake charge would likely lead to detonation and various other related problems.

If you’ve got excessive white smoke in your exhaust, I’m going to agree with ‘thelate1’ in guessing that the head gasket is damaged. Check your coolant for oil, and also drain your oil and check for any milky grey/white coloration in the oil.

Unfortunately, if your head gasket has let go, which I find the most likely, you will ideally need to rebuild the motor, as coolant in the oil can cause damage to bearings, scoring, etc etc etc.

head gasket +1

ok… i have searched that… and i even told the mechanic that it might be a headgasket… but he said no because its not leaking oil… so i didnt mention that earlier… but i have not tried the oil in my coolent thing… god… i hope not… that would suck major ass…:stare: i’ll see whats up once i get home from work… now im all scared…thanks for the help… i’ll tell you guys tommarow to see how it went…thanks again…

just do the headgasket. it is about $60 and ond can be done in a day easily.

i read up on how to change a head gasket. i even looked up some forums on here. from what i read it is fairly hard and if you mess up a small thing its game over :danger: . the best thing i could do i guess is take it to a mechanic… charge me up the ass for it… and see if that fixes it… but i have to make sure it is first of all… im probably looking at 700 bucks for it also and thats just labor…geez…so… i’ll see whats up thanks…

Not sure what mechanic would charge you $700 for labor to change a head gasket, but I find that to be excessive.

You don’t have to take the car to a shop to diagnose yet anyway. Check for oil in the coolant, and check for coolant in the oil. From there, perform a compression test and a leakdown test. After you’ve done all that, you’ll have a much better idea of where to address your attention.

Don’t freak out yet, just work the problem methodically. The reason we’re all leaning toward head gasket is that your symptom(s) often accompany a failing/failed head gasket. We could be wrong, or maybe we’re right but the problem isn’t severe yet. In that case, a simple replacement of the gasket could put you back in business.

Just work the problem, and take things one step at a time.

quick question… lets say it has oil in the radiator fluid. wouldnt this cause my car to overheat? just wondering… cuz it hasnt… but i im still worried that my engine is jacked…:bawl: … but maybe i might of have a lil luck in my pocket and could still be safe… which i really…really… hope so… and bout the head gasket price… i do understand that it is really expensive… but i live in spokane… and they dont do much competition on mechanic shops ther for they price up the ying yang and we end up fearing that our motors collapse or find somthing wrong with it…ha ha… if indeed it is the gasket… i will try and do that on saturday with a freind and a helms book… but i still have to check my oil and my fluid… thanks alot for your help guys…i really do appreciate it…:hugs:

Let us know how things go with your troubleshooting.

A compression test and/or leakdown test can reveal good information too, so I would recommend doing those too.

Anyway, let us know what happens.

Good luck

u should check ur turbo… open up ur charge pipes and see if u have any oil in them… im thinking its the turbo unless u bought rebuilt or new… u cant trust old parts

thats what i also thought… my mechanic said it was probably the bearings… or its just leaking to much oil… and its burning the crap out of it… but today is saturday and i am going to check my oil. i did open up the radiator cap and its… well… green like it should be… ha ha… and i also checkd my dip stick to see if their was like a watery or grayish substence on it ( radiator fluid mixed with oil) but it seems fine. but it is alot of white smoke… could it be a combination of things… damn that would suck… ha ha. i also forgot to mention. that when i do run my car and run it for a while. assuming i am driving granny style… if i turn it off, then try and turn it back on… it wont start till my engine is cooled. maybe around…7 to 10 minutes of waiting… then it will start like nothing happend… but it struggles to stay on cuz it idles so god dang low… and this is why my mechanic said its not getting enough air because my fuel is boiling thus causing all this crap… but this doesnt explain the smoke… oh man… i just wanna run my car… right now im driving a 96 chevy corsica… and im a structural engineer. how do u think i feel when i pull up in a big time suite but drive my girls corsica?.. ha ha… pretty crapy… i get nothing but looks in my da… but now its for the wrong reasons… (smoke)… ha ha… thanks for the help guys. i’ll keep you guys informed…

boostred: i will check the charge pipes and see how that goes… and the turbo was opened, checked and cleaned by the mechanics. they said it was good… but then again… it wasnt new… and it wasnt rebuilt… so… the mechanic also told me that it will cost me 200 bucks for a rebuild plus installation… but it will cost less getting another turbo… but he said the turbo i got is really good. its a t3 trim .48 turbo. you got me where they got it from… ha ha…(think its off a merkur, oh well) thanks again for the help

Since none of us can see exactly what is going on and only speculate I will add one more possibility. I had a problem of the FPR not opening and the pressure would build up and the car would not just run rich I would have vapor coming out of the exhaust. It looked like a blown hg but it was running stupid rich and there was gas in my oil. It really sounds like some other problem but just my 2 cents worth to give you another perspective. Smell the smoke. If it smells like gas this could be the possibility. Also check the injectors because they could be stuck open. Just another option.

well if thers blue in the white smoke that prob means oil. but if its all white most of the time mean coolent so u might have a bad head gasket. just my 2 cents

What does the exhaust smoke smell like? Oil or coolant?
Are you loosing coolant? Coolant can stilll leak into the combustion chamber without being contaminated with oil.

still haven’t decided to just do the timing belt yourself? i bet a quarter that its the head gasket.

WELP… I NOTICED ITS PURE WHITE… AND I AM NOT LOSING COOLENT… NORE HAVE COOLENT IN MY OIL… I DROVE WITH MY HOOD OFF TO SEE IF IT WAS THE "NOT GETTING ENOUGH COOL AIR DEAL… YOU WOULD KNOW IF YOU WERE PAYING ATTENTION. ( THANKS FOR THE ONES WHO WERE)… AND IT DIDNT DO A DAMN THING… EXCEPT TO NOTICE THAT THEIR IS WHITE SMOKE COMING FROM THE TURBO… DONT KNOW WHER OR FROM WHAT… BUT I THINK THAT IS THE COLPRETE… JUST LIKE MY MECHANIC SAID… SO… NEXT MONDAY IM TAKING IT IN… IT WILL SPEND A WEEK IN THE SHOP… THEN I WILL TELL YOU GUYS WHATS GOING ON WITH IT… SO THE MECHANIC IS GOING TO PUT THE INTERCOOLER IN THE FRONT… THEN REBUILD MY TURBO… AND NOTCH DOWN THE RICHNESS OF THE CAR… AND I THINK THIS WILL SOLVE LOTS OF MY PROBLEMS… AT LEAST I HOPE SO… HA HA… KEEP YOU GUYS INFORMED… THANKS AGAIN…:blah:

all caps. U got coolant lines on ur turbo right? If so remove them because they are not needed.

Next thing. If u turbo isnt blown and burning(black smoke) or leaking oil (Oil in charge piping) then there is no reason to rebuild it. First of all, dont be afraid to do some shit urself. The first kit i built i really had a peice of shit setup. Working on my 5th, this one is for me, it will be pretty nice. Dont pay a fucking mechanic for it. Unless it is a turbo shop is rebuild will last for practically no time at all, and u will be back where u started.

By the way. The air has nothing to do with it, it just doesnt give u as much power. It is ricers like u that ruin this site. After it is out of the shop it will still smoke, have fun.

lacking knoledge doesnt make me a ricer… thats why lots of people come here for help. i do thank you for your help, knoledge and expertese. oh and i do think its the turbo, and i did mention that i might take it in so they can rebuild it. not correcting nor questioning you, and yes it is burning lots of oil, and no its not black smoke, its white as posted. thanks again for your impute…

for thos still wondering what i was talking about… its a lil somthing like this…
