is an LS Vtec , turbo a reliable setup ? ive got a b16 head ready to be put on my b18a block, but ive got enough to turbo the car as well.
Id prefer to turbo the b18a rather then do LS vtec if its a bad setup to go with.
from what i heard turbo makes more power then ls vtec is that right ?
just looking for comments on the reliability and whether i should go lsvtec or turbo.
Turbo LS would probably be more reliable unless you do the necessary precautions to prevent issues with the ls vtec. Ls Vtec Turbo is a very powerful combination, but done wrong won’t last. I’ve got a buddy who just got his lsvtec turboed and his is a near stock lsvtec setup, which is kind of risky unless he can keep himself from turning the boost up, but the car already hauls ass at only 7lbs.
I’m in the process of doing lsvtec turbo myself, I’ve gotten arp head studs, itr oil pump, gsr girlde, block guard, pistons and rods, and itr valve sorings to help prevent a short term motor life. I think if you keep it down to 8lbs or less, and under 8k rpms, you could do the lsvtec turbo with stock internals and you should be fine.
If I didnt have a gsr, I probably would just do turbo ls because the ls motor has been proven time and time again to be a great turbo motor that produces good power lasts quite a while. I personally think G2 gsr’s are too rare to be robbed of their vtec.
So, I guess it all boils down to two things (which I think every setup boils down to)…
LOL, I love it!!! When you see these^ powerful words from theJunkman, you know something was terribly wrong with the statement he is referring to. The fact that he didnt even explain himself means he probably feels its not even worth his keystrokes, lol.
K let me explain. I dont know alot about engines ect so if your going to be a fucking moron when im asking a question dont post on my threads, forums are for help / questions whether your an engine guru or not i dont care, either answer the question or fuck right off thanks.
I think the reason they posted that is becuase, why would you turn off the VTEC. There is no reason to turn it off. VTEC does nothing fo harm to the turbo if anything, it allows more air to pushed through the motor.
I ran an LS/VTEC with a T3/T4 and loved it. When I hit 5500 RPM I would be at full boost and VTEC kicked in, it screamed like a bat outta hell.
There is no logical reason to turn off the VTEC if you are running a turbo. It would also be a waste of money. Why would you get a VTEC motor, not to run VTEC.
Its not me turning the vtec off, I said it was my buddy … for tuning reasons he was just going to turn it off until his buddy was able to tune the vtec with the turbo. and i asked…Why would someone do that ? because it confused me as well, people dont read the posts properly and then post stupid replies.
Matty…calm down. the only reason im going to be patient with you is b/c earlier in the thread you said you did not know much about motors.
Here it goes. How much money do you have??
If you have a decent amount, research machine shops in your area, find one that specializes in import engines. Then buy these parts:
ARP Rod, and head bolts
Golden Eagle VTEC Conversion, complete kit
Golden Eagle Block Guard
Bring these parts along with your block and VTEC cylinder head to the machine shop and tell them to:
Balance the crank
Shot Peen the rods
Install the ARP Rod bolts
Install the Block guard
Assemble the motor
If you dont have alot of money, sell the VTEC Head and save up and buy a turbo KIT, you obviously dont know enough to really put one together yourself and i am under the assumption that a shop is installing it. I really hope this helps you out.
That my friend is exactly the response i was looking for, thank you . I will look into the prices ive got a guy giving me a quote in a few mins as well.
If it is out of my range ill go ahead with the turbo setup, seems you can pull a bit more power out of that, If i do go turbo i could just do quite a few internals for extra power gain correct?
well the issue is again how much $$ do you have?
turbo kit= ~$3000
installation + tuning…have no idea b/c a shop has never touched my car
now if youre sticking to your B18A and no VTEC, your going to cut your costs dramatically and for the price of your VTEC head you could buy some pistons and rods.
anyway you have to look at what you want to do.
This is what it all boils down to:
How much money do you have?
How much power do you want to make?
power is directly related to how much money you have
Or YOU could use the search button and answer many of your questions in seconds. I’m a fucking moron? Hardly. Make sure you or your buddy or whoever rotate your johnson rods , clean your muffler bearings , adjust your axel extruder valves and check your blinker fluid before switching vtec to the off position.
