Hello G2IC. I made a thread way back in 08 when I got this car but I thought I’d just create a new one. When I got the car it had a power steering leak and a dented oil drain plug bung that made it more of an oval. I replaced the seals on the power steering pump and got a new oil pan. Also did a tune up on it and replaced any seals I could without taking everything apart. Went to take it for a test drive and ended up spinning a bearing. Fast forward 7 long years and I got a new motor for it, a JDM B20B from HMotorsonline.
With the help of a friend we pulled the old motor.
From a hookup I was able to get an ACT clutch kit. Here are the parts next to the stock ones. I got the Prolite flywheel, heavy duty pressure plate and performance street disc clutch.
We got all of that mounted up to the new B20.
Switched over all of the brackets and manifolds from the B18 to the B20.
Then we dropped the motor in.
Since the car hasnt been registered for the past 7yrs (Yes I am an idiot and didnt put it as non-op cause I didn’t know if I was going to keep it or not) I not only had to smog the car but had do a smog inspection. So I got a new Optima battery, my stock one died, stock air intake, and replaced my broken windshield.
The car wouldn’t start and with some research and help from the forums here I bought a Walbro 255lph fuel pump and replace that, sorry I didn’t take any pics but it was a pain in the butt! One of the tank straps would not stay in the body groove and kept poping out. I also had to replace both tie rod ends and the locking nuts were seized. After 10 minutes with a blow torch on each nut I was able to get them off and replaced them. The car was on cut springs when I bought it and since time and money were not on my side I bought a cheap ebay coilover sleeve kit and installed that.
I was also able to get a pair of 1 piece headlights from a local junk yard for $100
The interior of the car is pretty clean with only a couple problems that bug me. The drive bolster is ripped and theres a small rip on the back of the seat also. There is also a stain in the driver side rear seat.
I went the DMV and paid my registration and then took it for a smog test and it passed.
Now to some of the problems I am having with the car. Before I spun the bearing in the stock motor the car would grind when shifting into 4th and 5th gear. Before I put the trans back in the car with the B20 I had a friend help me look at it and all the synchro springs were bad so we replaced those. The synchros looked fine but some of the selector sleeves were rough but didnt look that bad. So we replaced the springs and put it back together. Now when I drive it the trans is real bad. 1st and 2nd gear are fine, 3rd grinds a little but not always. 4th worked at first but had pop out issues. Now I cannot get it into 4th when driving no matter what, it just grinds like crazy. 5th used to work fine but now it is hard to get into 5th and sometimes grinds. Today when driving, it got stuck in 5th gear and I could not shift out. I had to pull over and come to a complete stop before I was able to get it out of 5th and back into neutral. When the car is idle or off I can shift through all of the gears but getting over to 5th/reverse I have start over on the left and slide it hard to the right, I cannot go from 4th to 5th straight. I am not sure what to do now. Do I rebuild the whole thing or just 3rd-5th and reverse?
Next little issue is I do not know where this vacuum lines goes to or comes from. I think it is what is causing my bouncing idle.
When the car sits idle for a while and if you rev it a bit it starts to get warm. If you drive it hard it will also start to overheat. When you drive normally it is fine. Not sure what I should do to try and fix this.
The last issue is kind of a big one. The car was in an accident before I bought it but I didn’t know this till after the fact. The front radiator support is bent and messing up the headlight alignment and hood latch. My hood does not lock fully. Would this be hard to fix?
Nice progress on the DB… seems like your off to a good start… as far as the overheating… might wanna check the T-stat also to see if you have enough coolant…did you bleed it properly?
As far as the bouncing idle… make sure that all the vacuum hoses are attached where there suppose to go as well as the sensors. I see in one your pics that theres no hose atttached to that dash pot… which might not make a difference since i took mine out…
secondly… I also planning on installing a b20 since my original motor is at 257k. Burns about half a quart of oil every 700 miles or so…did you have to get it Bar’d? Im also in CA…
Thank you. I just reused the t-stat from the B20 that I bought from HMO. I still have the stock one from my B18 so not sure if they are different and which one I should use, I dont think it matters. I filled it with coolant and think I bleed it properly. I filled it up and let it idle for a while with the radiator cap and reservoir cap off then topped it off.
I checked all of my hoses and sensors and that is the only one that is not connected.
When I got it smogged I did not have the hood on it. The tech took a good look at it and said it was fine and then did the smog test, which it passed. He did not send me to get bar’d or anything so no I didn’t.
Small little update but sorry no pictures. The other day I took my teg out for a drive to take my son to a youth conference at our church. On the way there I was driving along in 5th gear and it popped out of gear. I could not get it back into 5th nor could I move the shifter to any other gear, it was stuck in “5th” but not in gear. I had to have the car towed back home and a friend and I dropped the trans. We took it apart and found a couple things wrong. The 5th gear sleeve would not slide into gear and when we took it apart it was pretty rough. Also the 5th gear hub was real bad and worn down bad. I called all over and I cannot find the hub anywhere. Even the dealer has the part number but said it is discontinued. Looks like I will have to buy a new trans and I do not have the money for that right now. Oh also while looking we noticed that my other friend who worked on the trans before put the 5th gear back in upside down and caused the 5th sleeve and hub to go bad and preventing 4th gear from working.
That sucks about the trans, but as far as your pushed in core support goes, it looks to be an easy pull. Find yourself a nice tow strap or chain, a hearty tree, and pull away.
I called some local junk yards today and I found a trans for $200, not sure if I will get it or not. Going to see if I can find the part I need first before I buy another trans. Also I took my front bumper off and took some pics of the bent rad support. Hopefully it will be easy to fix and straighten.
that’s a very light hit. i pulled an eg civic back to relative straightness that hit a utility pole. i will try and find pics on my old computer. that will pull out with minimal effort, might even pull with a heavy ratchet strap and a stationary object
OK cool. My friend said to go to harbor freight and get something called a “come along”. Said it is shaped like a V with one anchor point. Was going to use the tow hooks on my Navigator to anchor too.
1. attach $10 tow strap to navigator, hook to core support.
2. stand on brakes/ebrake of integra
3. mash gas of navigator
4. success.
seriously, it won’t take very much to move the support.
LOL, all I could think of when I read that was this;
Well since I havent been able to find the 5th gear synchronizer hub for my S1 trans I decided to go ahead and buy the trans from the junk yard for $200. I asked several times to make sure it was a 90-91 trans as I have an ACT clutch kit for a small spline trans. I go to pick it up and guess what I found waiting for me, a YS1 trans from a 92-93 but they swore they pulled it out of a 1990 Integra. He gave me a receipt with a 7 day full return so I bought it. I was hoping that I might be able to make it work but after a call with Synchrotech I found out I could not. They did tell me that they have good used 5th hubs (Wish I called them earlier :bang:) and the 5th hardened sleeve and it would cost me about $140+tax. So I can either have them fix my stock S1 trans or keep the YS1 and find a new clutch kit and flywheel. Synchrotech said that the YS1 is a better trans and parts are easier to find than the S1. Any opinions or thoughts?
What are your plans with the car? The s1 has very short gears, which can be useful. My transmission is a ys1 ls case with s1 1-4 gears and LS 5th. Your ideal gearing depends on what you are going to be doing with it when its done.
Mainly I am going to use to car to drive to work but I wouldnt mind it to be quick 1-4 but I would like a long 5th for freeway. Also the spine from the S1 is small and thats what my ACT clutch is for and the YS1 is big so I would have to get a new clutch. I havent opened up the YS1 to see how the synchors, springs and sleeves look so I will need to do that soon. Do either of the trans I have come with the LS 5th?
yes. ys1 was stamped on both b18a1 (LS) and b17 (GSR) transmissions. It is VERY unlikely that you found a GSR transmission at the junkyard. You can tell for sure by counting gears, but I would bet on it being an LS, meaning you have your 5th gear already. If by some miracle you’ve been given a b17 transmission, just use it. You can also use B series hydraulic parts in your YS1 case, you are not limited to cable parts.
Thanks for that info. The first time I looked up the YS1 trans I read that it is from later GS-R motors and would make it a big spline trans. I later found it was avail on the 90-93 tegs B18A1s and that would make it a small spine, and the 92-93 GS-R with B17 and I believe would make it a big spline. I haven’t been able to check what I actually have but I am assuming since the junk yard said they pulled it from a 90 teg that it is a small spline and I would be able to use it with my ACT clutch kit I already have. I really hope so but I wont be able to look at it for a couple days.
Last night I remembered that I have a stock small spline clutch laying around so I went to see if it would fit on the YS1 and it didn’t. So I texted my good friend who works at ACT. He texted me back today with a price and I drove right over and picked up my new clutch. Hopefully tomorrow I will crack open the trans and make sure everything looks ok before I install it in my car. Now I have 2 small spline clutches to sell (Stock and ACT) to try and get back some of the money for the new one.

if you wouldn’t mind shipping, here is my email boza1017@hotmail.com im interested in the stock clutch if it’s new.
it is a 90-91 Performance Sprung street disc clutch small spline. Pretty much brand new, I only put 200-300 miles on it. I will uninstall it tomorrow and take some pics for you.
