Which brand/type of mechanic gloves do you guys use/recommend ? I’m sick of getting oil and dirt under my fingernails.
How about you just sack up?
hehe
neil, the latex gloves doctors and vets use are good alternatives. aren’t the mechanic’s gloves kinda bulky?
We use the latex gloves for most things and when it get’s hot or heavy, we use the Mechanics gloves. Also, the Mechanics gloves are not water proof, so we use thick rubber gloves for the parts wash.
Yeah guys I’ve used Latex, but they rip too easily, especially when you’re getting screws off by hand. Unless there’s a heavy duty latex glove out there I don’t know about ?

how about Surgeon’s latex gloves? Orthopedic gloves are even thicker (but those would cost ya some money, unless you jacked them from the O.R.
)
mechanix gloves seem mainstream. i like latex and mechanix together when i reach in hot place or what not.
ya i hate when those latex ones rip. at least theyre cheap so i just go through 3 or so every few hours
I’ve tried the mechanix but I like the craftsmen ones better. They fit me better and they are a lot less bulky
RoadRace Engineering uses something called Gator Skins. It’s supposed to be a lot more durable than the regular latex gloves
i’ve been using some Nitrile gloves i got from harbor freight awhile back. i believe it was $10 for 100 gloves (so 50 pairs). The nitrile is much stronger than the latex gloves i had used previously. they will still occasionally break depending on what you’re doing, but overall i’m very happy with them. And typically i even reuse them if they don’t break (yeah, i’m a cheap bastard).
oh, and they are blue in color… oh so sexy.
I use a pair of Manitou (or Answer for those not into biking) motocross gloves… nice pseudo-leather palms and full armor on the knuckles for those moments that bolts break loose and you bash your hand into something sharp… they have worked great for me for over 2 years now…
Normal latex for working around grease/dirt.
Mechanix for working around sharp metal/hot objects.
im a mecanix glove user. also the requisite rubber gloves.
i use the mecanix gloves. well worth the money. i dont realy like the rubber latex type gloves because they dont let your hands breath. eastwood has some of those nitrile gloves and should work alot better then latex. IMO just buy some good soap.
ok those latex ones i was using sucked. i was using the clear ones they use for beauty stuff. now i have the medical ones that are thicker and cream colored. much better, but of course still break. dont know how much they cost tho. the clear ones i bought in a box of 100 for 5bucks.
i really dont have an issue with the breathing part at all, i guess i got used to it quickly. i used to hate wearing dishwashing gloves cuz of that.
as for the mechanics gloves, i always overlooked it cuz what if you get them really oily? id rather not spread the filth to my other tools or parts of the car heh. i like the disposable method cuz i can just throw on a new clean pair for cheap.
I use cotton gloves. I got used to wearing them at work and thought they would be good for automotive use. They will keep the grease from getting under your fingernails pretty good. Once you get them wet there toast. If I know im going to be working on a certain part of my car, the day before I will take it to the car wash and spray that area off pretty good. This helps alot!!!

think im gonna try those now. ive probably run through about 5 boxes of latex since my last post. seems that most degrade very quickly when exposed to oil. also acquired a bag full of leather/cotton ones from my mom- gardening i guess.
I just use some Craftsman Gloves I got at sears, they seem to do the job. They are machine washable, and they are this really cool looking red. I got them on sale for about 14 dollars and when I have to handle something really greasy I just take them off and put some rubber gloves on.
It works for me
As a profesional mechanic I used Mechanic brand gloves. They worked great for everything from just turning wrenches to grabbing hot exhaust (not to mention they can really save your hands when welding). The only problem I encountered with them is they do rip easily with constant use. I was buying a set every 2 weeks when I worked for Midas.
