Need help with JDM B16A

ok so i have a b16a in my da. My problem is that the 4 bolts where the spark plug cover tightens down well 2 of them were over tightened and caused them to rip off. now where the gromets are i am leaking oil. I’ve been searchin to find an answer on how to replace them but i dont know how.
anyone have any ideas?

tap and die set

and its not called a spark plug cover its called a valver cover…and i believe your talkin about the valve cover nuts n bolts??

… there is indeed a Spark Plug/Wire Cover. Think of vtec b-series motors.

If you’ve taken off a valve cover before, you’d know that its not a bolt that broke, but an over-tightened nut that broke a stud.

OP, tell us whether you have a non-vtec or a vtec motor, that will aid us in helping get you the correct part numbers to solve your issue.

Sorry but his post says a b16 so it’s v tec. Op if you could post a picture of the valve cover and the broken nut/stud it would be helpful thank you. And to answer your question all you need to do after you have the part is to purchase a valve cover set with new grommets from your local parts retailer along with permatex grey silicone. Then remove said valve cover and replace the studs one at a time. Then just replace the valve cover with the new gasket and grommets and call it a day.

Keeping in mind of course to not over tourque the studs. And if the cap nuts that hold both the valve cover and spark plug wire cover have pieces of the stud remaining I’d recommend just to replace them. Hope that helps if you need any help or photos I’d be glad to email or text u the pictures 661. 406 seven one six two.

Reading completely owns me today. But JDM_INTEGGY hit the nail on the head.

surely most and almost everyone calls it valve cover not spark plug cover… neways when u tighten them downn jus use a 3/8 or smaller ratchet and snug it down doesnt have to be super tight but nice snugged enough…i use my quarter ratchet since thatt doesnt over torque them…

On a B-Series motor, there is indeed a difference between a spark plug/wire cover and a valve cover. As well as on an H-Series, a K-Series, and most other 4cyl motors for that matter.

The gray ‘insert’ is a Spark Plug/Wire Cover. The black part is a Valve Cover. Yes, technically the WireCover nuts hold the Valve Cover as well, but if the OP says its a Wire Cover stud, then we know what part number to get. The outside Valve Cover studs are NOT the same as the 4 middle studs that hold the Wire Cover.

Also, torque specs are your friend. If you’re uncomfortable doing it by hand use an in/lbs torque wrench and torque to the proper spec. If doing it ‘hand tight’, as cream1316 said, use a 3/8".

gotcha

Yea I am talkin about the wire cover studs twp of them ripped out. And its leaking oil from their.

Thanks jdm_integgy I will be sending u a text when I get off work
also thanks unified112 for ur help.

here are some pics of what am talking about.

Just pull the valve cover off and with some pliers, unscrew it and replace the stud, there not much at Acura.

91_ls do u know the part number? or what its called?

Just ask them for the valve cover grommet stud. You might be able to just get one off another motor as well, just make sure there the same size.

This should help you.

Here are the part#
#24 is - 90012-PM7-000 BOLT B, HEAD COVER $3.32

[/QUOTE]

As seen in the pic i had posted, they are indeed the same all around. The senter studs are set just a tad higher then the outer studs, that’s all.

awesome thanks 91_ls. i will hit the dealership first thing monday morning.

Any time bro,good luck.

Not to be a dick… but there is a reason that when you look up PartNumber 90012-PM7-000, the Quantity Needed is 4, and that reason is because you are incorrect… There are 8 total fasteners for the valve cover.

I’ll say it again… the Plug/Wire Cover studs ARE NOT THE SAME as the outer Valve Cover studs.

The part needed would be #20 (x2) (PN: 90014-PR3-000 $5.75ea), from this picture:

And coincidentally, part #20 (x2) (PN: 90212-PR3-000 $2.80ea) from this picture, if you need new fasteners:

You would also need part #21 (x4) (PN: 90213-PH3-000 $3.08), if you installed a Wire Cover.

Strange,i called the Carson City Honda to get the part number and they said there all the same.
But in your pic,the top dose look much longer,so the guy must not know what he is talking about. lol

You can clearly see in the pic on the left that #18 and #19 being different, but that looks like the LS valve cover,so IDK. Thanks for posting that up man.
OP,post the differences of the 2 if possible so others can see. GL.
