Newbie PET PEEVES!!! *read please*

This board is here for people to help other people but I feel that as the board grows it gets less and less n00b friendly. It happens. I don’t think, however, that the newbies should be scared away. This board definitely is NOT the least n00b friendly board on the internet (go and post something in the road racing forum at Honda-tech or anywhere on pgmfi.org, although that site is kick ass), but it has it moments. So since I sympathize with the new folks I thought I would write this up.

Why the “regulars” can be assholes, and what you can do:

The worst is the vague questions. People come in and ask something along the lines of “How do you build an LS/V-TECH?” or “What shocks should I get?” Do the n00bs really expect to get a good answer? I mean someone would have to write a book and then the n00b would probably still have more questions. So to the n00b reading this I ask: What are your goals? What do you do with the car? Whats done to the car? How much money do you have? How much time are you willing to invest? Etc… You need to be specific and to know what you actually want out of the person answering the question. Also, don’t expect anything from us. We answer stuff in our free time (or school time, heh) and we don’t HAVE to answer your question. So your goal, I guess, should be to make us want to answer your question. I know I would be much more inclined to answer a thread (in detail if needed) that was well written, obviously had some thought put into it, and it looks like you looked around for an answer before posting.

The next thing a lot of people hate is the repetitive threads. The more the question has been asked the pissier people get. Most of the regulars read just about every thread that is on this site and so we pretty much know what is here and where it is. I realize the n00bs don’t have this knowledge of the site but you have to look at it from our perspective. If there is a thread that already answered your question why should we write it all up again just for you when its on this site and just a few seconds away? The search function on this site is great and it should be used to great lengths before any type of question is posted.

Next is credibility. You don’t automatically get it. I don’t care who you are, you have to earn it. You cannot come on here and claim outrageous shit then be surprised when no one believes you. It happens a lot.

N00b don’ts (these will help us be nice to you):

Don’t post vague repetitive questions. Do a little looking around and figure out what you actually want. If you are new to Hondas or cars you need to build a knowledge base.

Don’t act like you know what you’re talking about if you don’t. Quite a few members on here know their stuff so don’t try and act all cool with your big talk. We will see right through you.

Don’t type like a homie/stunna talks. You will get no respect. Also, learn to spell and sometimes use decent grammar.

Don’t talk smack to “regulars” unless it is very very necessary.

Don’t want everything handed to you. You need to do a lot of the learning on your own. That’s the best kind of learning anyway.

Don’t be a dick. That is unless you are funny. That seems to work out for a few members ;).

N00b do’s:

Do make your subject titles jive with your topic (like no threads called “Help!!” or “Question” or something).

Do gain a knowledge base. I have included a few links (mostly of threads from g2ic to help get you started).

Do use the search function. I even use it a lot.

Hell yea Ben, excellent write up!

That will help alot of people out, when someone regiesters it should automaticaly link them to something like this.

Either Ben was really pissed off or he just had a lot of free time on his hands…

Way to go Ben!!

That was a great write up! If only it had been there when I signed up and was asking those same generic questions sigh

I hope the more n00b folks like it too! We are willing to help if you put in the effort too.

To be honest, I dont know why i wrote it. I hope it helps some people and I hope I stop seeing vague-ass questions all over the place.

Ben

Nice write up Ben!

you rule ben

Ben’s my Hero :hugs:

Thanks for the info. I allready pretty much did all that. I have posted a few threads, only after searching. I am not the typical n00b who wants a H22. There have been some crazy ass mods like the AWD. Thanks for the list, I bookmarked it.

“regulars” = “zoomintegra”.

i heard that guy can be a prick. but a funny one.

:whip:

Great post.

good work ben. can this be “stickied”? if that’s the right term? some of those searches may come in handy…i guess i’m fairly new but if i can answer somebody’s question, i try to help them out, rather than just tellin’ them to “search”. maybe i’m doing it wrong but sometimes, no matter how many different terms i use, a search comes up blank…

you and formz and stu. are the folks i was talking about in that one.

I’m glad you guys like it. I thought either no one would notice or I would get a bunch of crap.

Very helpful post Ben… I sure hope the n00bs read it. I have noticed lots of n00bs don’t like to read much.

Now, I would like to propose a solution:

I think we should take all of the n00bs in the world and put them on an island with no internet access

" Also, learn to spell." Uhhh ben if ya havnt noticed im from idaho, and cant smell i mean spell very wells… Sorrys i just aint nots SMRT… But ill do my BESTEST!

VERY GOOD JOB ON IT! All i can say is WOW… I think this should be put in every forum…
