Notice to FI *enthusiasts* and *posers* alike...Cultivating the G2IC F.I. Atmosphere

I’ve noticed a few trends over the two years I have been a member of G2IC.

When I started I liked the flash, the glamour and glitz of the import scene. Hell, I can still sit down and watch TFATF & 2F2F back to back on a rainy saturday afternoon still and enjoy it. A lot, and I mean an entire flock of people have started joining the darkside in the past year, and even more have thoughts of granduer about joining the FI elite class.

As many of us know, it takes a lot of time, patience, money and knowledge to turbo charge your own car. This means planning your setup, pricing out the best deals, waiting for shipments, getting scammed, reading every book and thread you can to learn what to do and what to buy, and actually physically doing the install yourself (and having it come out correct). Some like myself even take it one step further and learn to tune for themselves.

I’ll share with you that ALL of my motivation to do this was to learn how and to see a finished car that I built, I designed, I tuned and that I could be proud of for as long as I wanted. It might not be the fastest, it’s certainly not the prettiest, but for me the fact that I did it all is the most rewarding thing of all.

Many of you looking to get into FI might not have the same desires driving you to turbo your car. Maybe one of your friends did it and you want to be like him, maybe you want to go out an street race and that tiny B16 you had a shop install just isnt cutting it in your local scene. Maybe you just want to go fast as hell on the highway or take it to a track on the weekends. What ever your motivation, I cant hate…but I can tell you that most of the motivations I listed in this paragraph are short lived and fade away from your brain as soon as the next best thing comes out or you find something else to latch onto.

I’m getting a little long winded here so I’ll get to my point. There are quite a few people here I respect greatly and whether you know it or not, your posts helped me reach my goals to the point I am at now. Haberdasher, MIKES, Zoom, Stu, RAWB, XDeep, and a few others I cant remember off the top of my head. I believe that all of these guys and many more to this site have more information than most of us know and I hope you stick around here as this is my favorite forum to visit on the web.

But I want it to be better, in fact I have personally being trying to do something about it and I wanted to bring that fact in the open since FI no longer has a Moderator dedicated to us anymore. I think this is good and we can self-moderate much better honestly. I have instigated many discussions (or tired to) often pointing out devil’s advocate or details I actually didnt believe were true to get someone to actually prove me wrong. I have gotten into some serious debates about tech (and because I’m pretty proficient at searching) and have been able to prove some people incorrect and stop the spread of bad information.

Let’s do this more…make it more tech and less clutter, less blinging, yo! Instigate discussion and keep out the haters. BRING FACTUAL PROVEN DATA INTO YOUR RANTS INSTEAD OF COMMON ERRONEOUS MISCONCEPTIONS. Be able to back your posts up and dont add pointless crap.

To the newbs, noobs, noobies and rookies…you probably haven’t read this far, and if you have I commend you.

Find some passion in FI, dedicate yourself to it, because if you cant, you are gonna blow shit up and then dont come crying here!

Please add your remarks…I just cant type anymore.

Who has ideas about how to make G2IC better?

My first idea to keep some of the bling and cosmetic joy that goes along with FI is to create ONE “Rides” thread where everyone gets ONE post in the thread to post pics and stats about their ride. Remember, if you update your car you can always edit and update the ONE post you get in that thread. Wouldnt it be cool to have one thread to look at pics, setups, info on a specific member. Send a noob there and let him pick and choose. That one thread alone could solve 12 noobie questions a week!

Ok, Im done!

…sniff sniff…
wow… that touched the bottom of my heart…

i agree with ya xeno. MY motivations are a little different than yours, my motivation is to build my car and make it as fast as i can to bring pride to our I-4 imports. Of course i’m still learning, and yes, i’ve done extensive researched, was ripped off or scammed and was provided with false information. The bad thing is that I’ve actually applied those false info. But hey, ya cant learn without makin mistakes rite (not major ones i hope… )

I’ve grown wiser and when i finally put the last piece of that turbo in, i felt DAM PROUD. Why, because i put my sweat and blood in it (minor scratches hehe). It’s a much different feeling than if you’re a rich ass spoiled brat who has all the money to spend; and all you had to do was take it to a shop and have em do it for you.

this is the difference, and you’re not a true car enthusiast if you havent worked on your car, or if you dont know how to change oils.

That is all.
I like the idea of having a “showcase thread” wouldnt be bad at all. it’d be like a Forum car show. hahahaha.

but how would pix and numbers help our or newbies/rookies?

Nice, I’m touched, seriously.

Anyway, I totally agree.

I used to be literly afraid of turboing my car, then just as I started warming up to the idea, I totaled my '96 GSR.

After driving my 73 Super Beetle around for like 6 months, I had plenty of time to read up on turbocharging. I was even going to turbo my Beetle until the starter went out and I said “Fuck it.” and took my tax money and bought my 90 G2 for $1,000 in perfect running condition with some dents and a cracked bumper. I pretty much stole my car.

Anyway, I read a lot of stuff on Honda-tech, I just decided that instead of skipping over stuff I didn’t immediatly recognize, I’d read it.

Then I got “Maximum Boost,” by Corky Bell for Christmas, along with that other popular turbo book by Hugh McInenes or something like that. Those books really helped me understand the basics, so I could understand the more detailed internet stuff better.

From there it’s been quite a journey. I bought a used Maxrev mani I think around May, and my girlfriend got a great deal on an intercooler from my friend in June around my birthday, (I finally got it six months later), and now, the only parts that I even need are turbo back exhaust, and the fitting for my oil drain tube, (well, also some hardware).

I thought that I’d need all this help from my mechanic buddy (his screen name is Honda Ghandi, he has forgotten more about Honda’s than I’ll ever know, was a Honda Mechanic for years, now has a full-sized lift in his garage, and is the only certified Hondata tuner in the state), but one day I just dove in feet first and never looked back.

Usually when I work on my car, I go to fast and break shit and cut corners, but so far I’ve taken my time and really impressed myself by doing a lot of stuff right. Like running the oil feed lines to my guage and tee, and relocating my batttery, and preparing my bumper and stuff.

So anyway, I’ll try to get some pictures when it all goes in here in a coupld of weeks. :stuck_out_tongue:

-Nods in agreement-

You’ll run into people that talk all this and that and lie out their arse. Hell, I used to do it. Then you meet the people that have read everything in the world and subscribe to every theory in the world. But I’ve learned first hand that until you get under the car and turn some serious wrenches, everything else doens’t matter. People need to do a few motor swaps…or get a wideband, or weld some pipe before they try boosting…just my thought.

Though I must say…
“Once you go boost, you don’t go back.”

I am touched man. Thank you for the compliment. Its good to educate/learn from the masses if and only if they are willing to learn and add to it. Forced induction is my passion. I take great pride in my accomplishments and goals. I don’t like getting into verbal combat with people over the net nor do I like to brag about what I got (thats so immature). Funny enough, I get emails sent to me daily from guys on this site along with Honda-tech asking for advice and help. This to me is what makes forced induction so enjoyable. I thrive on helping people, educating them and also learn lots from them in the process. I always tell people that get involved to do this when going FI to do the 10 commandments

  1. find out your goals first (how fast do I want to go)
  2. how much money am I willing to spend
3)is this a long term goal or have you got the coin to get started right away
  3. find someones setup you like and duplicate it if its what your looking for in a car, then critique it as you go along
    5)absorb info like a sponge
6)understand what all these parts do
    7)research like theres no tommorrow
    8)have patients
9)if you don’t know, ask somebody. Don’t do anything with doubt in your mind
  4. just do it

Turbo is just as reliable as NA if done right. Vtec or non vtec, there is no major difference between the 2 in mild (300whp) cars. BOTH motors can easily make those goals and maintain stock driveability. In higher hp applications vtec motors are your best bet and there is no subsititute for displacement. Keep a open mind, and if your truely serious about it, check your ego in at the door when getting into discussions so you can actually learn something or educate someone. BOOST is great. I am and always will be, TURBO FOR LIFE!!!:stuck_out_tongue:

MIKE, thats a good checklist, I’ll be quoting that a lot in the future.

It’s pretty easy to recognize who are the posers and who are the true enthusiasts these days on message boards. I think we have enough knowledgable guys to point out the bullshit and prove it with facts and figures.

My question is how to you turn these guys around to see the light? If you insult them, they act like children and call you names back…if you spoon feed them, they bleed you dry until you are sick of answering anyone’s questions, if you call their bullshit they take offense and call you :gay:

What do we do to make this place (speaking FI specifically) better? As members…

Re: Notice to FI enthusiasts and posers alike…Cultivating the G2IC F.I. Atmosphere

edit:

peep the sig. should explain everything. take care, kids.

I loved this post…reminds me of my younger ricer years. Before I knew anything about a car, yet alone a turbo. Then I totaled 2 of my cars and got 4 tickets…suspended my license. I loved my car but didn’t know anything about it so I had a year to do some serious researching. I started posting on HAI, that’s where I met Stu and Honda Ghandi. They’ve taught me a lot and made me realize I still have a lot to learn.

Then after talking with Stu and other board members, I was pointed to G2IC and found even more people that knew about cars. And it was pointed directly at DA’s which I love.

So, to make this site better, I say we archive this. So noobs know who to go to for their questions. We have very knowledgable people, some are smartasses  lol, but it seems they’re always willing to help out. Unless they’re asking about ls/vtec or “turbo Vs supercharger”.

I also really like the members ride thread, and a mod could delete any threads with just words

so…uh… how 'bout those BOVs you put in your muffler?.. :stuck_out_tongue:

J/k

I havent really noticed a trend, but that might be because ive only had my teg for 7 months. ive gone thru many ideas on what to do to my car. ive decided that i want it to be an all around performer. ive got the suspension done (almost, just need new bushings and a few well placed bars) and with that i was able to get second place in the local Auto-x series. now my sights are set on power. all im really looking for is to beat my Dad’s 69 camaro which stands at 14.0 (me driving). it shouldnt be hard, though my dad will be dropping a 502 ci engine into it when he feels the need to be the fastest once again. though i think ill still be ahead of him. ill also take it to the track, since i like tracks better than strips.

There are also several of you who i look up to as a sort of big G2 brother (Zoom, Haber, Xdep, Mike) and to the others, i probably havent read your posts yet. i hope that once i finish my project, i will be one of those guys other G2ICers can look up to. (you can ask me about suspension parts if you want :stuck_out_tongue: )

Later

Oppz sorry guys, didn’t mean to go off-topic

Is this in the right thread?

:wtf: :ot: :wrong: :squint:

pms would be best

This is the shit i’m talking about…

93teglspcola, do me a favor and edit your post so it ADDS something to the thread, then everyone who posted after him edit accordingly…

Damn:jerkoff:

To add another idea to this thread…i’d like to start and head up our own member written turbo guide. From inspiration I got from Dave (haber), I think that mostly noobs should be doing the writing.

We will have ONE thread as the guide, and when everyone has their articles done, each one will post his/her assignment in one post. Each topic will be specifically broken down and expected to be well researched by each individual who volunteers to write a short explanation.

I need to come up with a specific list of topics but to throw some ideas and really break it down, things should be covered like:

  • manifolds
  • turbos(compressor options, reading and understading compressor maps, different bearing technologies, compressor efficiency, trim sizes, etc)
  • intercoolers
  • engine management(fmu, afc, chipped ECUs, standalones, etc)
  • oil lines(filtering, oil selection, etc)
  • superchargers
  • piping (design, materials, DIY tutorial for G2s, etc)
  • exhaust, aftermarket, DIY, sizing

others…please add specific things to add to this list

thats not a good idea. since thats like giving them homework, and im sure they wont want to do it. what happens when they dont?

add exhaust sizing to the list

Well, if they are serious enough, hopefully they won’t ask for the assignment!

But the thinking is that the “noobs” have the most to learn…I’ve learned about more of this stuff and yes I could always learn more…but noobs come here trying to accelerate their learning curve (although sometimes they want to be spoonfed).

I think its time that we gave the beginners a challenge, and hopefully what we find is that they can teach us (those that think we know it all:D ) something for a change!

Alrighty then, I would like to help out on the guide, but honestly, im still quite new to the F.I. scene. I am willing to try! For a topic… Hmm, well I guess I can take a stab at the Manifolds? If thats alright with you guys though.

I will go ahead and research any of the topics. I think that this is a really good idea like someone else said because if you are a noob or semi-noob like me, then doing this little project will really enhance our knowlege of things FI. Also, you are right we probably wouldnt do this homework, if this was HS. But hopefully, if we are doing this it will be interesting and not boring like Statistics or American Literature. Anyway, I would take manifolds and intercoolers. Let me know when to commence this, although I have already started.

Im coming up with a comprehensive outline of things i would like to see covered…when I think its near-complete, Ill post a new thread dedicated to this “venture”

thanks for showing some interest guys!
