So if you look up my other thread (1st revive…) you will see the white GS I partial traded to get…a 5th gen Prelude!!! The rest of the trade entailed an 83 lincoln and 9mm pistol.
PICS:
Story:
CL find, 3 hrs away. Motor would turn over but not start. Took a compression tester along and found cyl. 2 at 50 when others at ~130 140ish. Put oil in cyl and checked again to determine rings or valves. It was rings. Also had ignition issue, no spark. BUT it came with other goodies: intake headers exhaust Apexi turbo timer working headunit and…a built and documented lsd trans with modified gearing 1-3 are slightly more aggressive and 4-5 slightly less for fuel mileage. Did I mention the motor was from tiger jap 2k miles ago and ran fine until now? What about new lbj’s and other front end parts? Or how about the fact it came with boxes of receipts and hid lights?? :ohyeah: So pretty sweet deal in my opinion.
And if you thought there had to be some bad in the story you are right. The trip to the trade was hell.
To start, we have our own dolly and we left at 1pm. Dolly the GS and drive the lincoln. After 2 hrs of smooth sailing a dolly tire explodes at 70 mph, oh shit!! to say the least. Ask a construction equip rental company if they can save the day or point the direction. “6 miles that way discount tire” another guy chimes in,“nah more like 4”. So take off. After 4 mi I run into this:
A wreck putting already dense traffic to one lane. Despite 8 mi with no shop I ask DQ if they know where it is…not a single fu**ing one (out of 8). So roll on and ask a nice lady at rural king. “well I know tire barn is less than a mile, and pass the university on the left”. Fine. 3 miles later i find tire barn and buy 2 tires: one mounted and one just in case . Go to T-bell while I wait and no sauce 10 seconds after she asked…WTF?! Thanked tire barn for being quick about service (better than tbell) guy says: yea their service sucks lately, I bought 2 beef burritos and 6 plain soft tacos; “that’ll be 16.94”. Well how much are the burritos? Whatever just give me the food. Turns out they were BEAN burritos and his wife was pissed.
Moving on we are back on track. Get another hr ish down and what do you think happened? thats right POW!! other dolly tire. luckily we just hit Indy…the kicker: its happy go home time and there is a wreck <1 mi ahead and 4 lanes of traffic :rimshot:. Go to Sams but policy is if you didnt buy it we wont mount it. So go to Walmart. “Sorry we close in 2 mins”. For fuck sake just mount it PLEASE!! Im stranded blah blah blah…“ok sure”. When its done I ask to speak with the worker who did it so I can flip a 5 for gratitude. “Im sorry sir but you cant do that, its against policy” “Thanks Cecil, you’ve been of great help on this fine day”. Rolling again we hit construction for a couple hrs and FINALLY make it to destination at 10pm. Complete the trade (unload load talk talk sign and drive) and make it home by 2 am no setbacks at all.
Anyway I know it was a book but was it worth the read? Questions, comments, opinions?
I had a riced beater for a bit lol. I like the boxiness of the body but 2 qualms; flippy lights and gauge unit doesnt smoothly integrate with rest of dash.
As for coat hanger, of course! how else would we steal all the hondas we now own? lol
I believe you are correct since this is what multiple people have said.
Ignition issue solved. Its the coil pack. Glad it was simple.
Motor is ready to be pulled to do rings and timing. As for rings the “engine specialist(s)” in my area turn away business for the FRM blocks… After talking for a bit they said they can ball hone, but a rigid could very likely destroy it. “Some turn out good, some get destroyed”.
Ended up here because I asked local Honda dealer who they have do their machining. (Also #1 shop in region). So the question is what now. Just a ball hone? do you risk it on rigid? Input would be appreciated.

Do the cylinder walls have any scoring or heavy scratches? If not just install a new set of rings on the pistons and put it back together. Too many people waste their time honing and boring when it does not even need to be done. I have an H series in my integra and am familiar with the FRM liners. I would not mess with it if I were you. JDM H22 longblocks are dirt cheap nowadays I would just swap longblocks if it comes down to having to rebuild yours. For the price of gaskets, rings, and other misc parts that go into a rebuild you are pretty close to a new longblock.
I dont know about the cylinders yet but we are about to find out. I am finding you are right about price of rebuild/longblock BUT I also have my own philosophy when it comes to car care. If you read my last rebuild thread you know I am “nit picky”. If its worth doing, its worth doing right. And if its worth doing right then it might as well be done to perfection (if possible).
So instead of hoping its a stuck ring and trying to free it, why not do it proper the first time and replace it. Therefore pull motor. If Im pulling the motor then why not do timing components (easier). If its all apart for these projects then all the pesky gaskets should be replaced cuz who wants to do all this work and still have an oil leaking/consuming engine? So with my philosophy I can have peace of mind that each piece is up to snuff and can handle what i throw at it as long as its not abusive.
With that on to pics etc!!!
This may have something to do with the lake in the tire well
^^^ see where it lost integrity?
And replaced with
pressure washed carpets…
But DRIVER side has discoloration that when washed emits a white foamy substance
And PASSENGER side has some type of oil you can see on the waste water
Heart removed
Look at all that space!!
Lastly, noting lights need some attention
Thanks for looking guys!! Hopefully you enjoy watching the transformation
dont worry I will see this revitalization through. This will be my winter driver so it has to get done, but unfortunately I work ~60 hrs a week so its tough to keep regular updates. And I will continue to update with pics
Ask and you shall receive…
After another long day at work I decided to power through as much of the tear down as I could since the machinist will be back later this week.
BUT FIRST!!! The story of my life is shit going wrong through no fault of my own, here is another instance…
Went to rally’s with a friend and look what happened
For realz?? I better not put in an app because I dont have a phd in retardo.
>Big bold letters saying “NO LETTUCE” was actually a request to add bacon…and there was a TON of lettuce :squint:
>Might as well call them UNloaded fries
>Did you see where it said “Chicken w/ grilled onions”? Yeah neither did I but thats what I got instead of a roadhouse bacon burger
>And by all means short me a sandwich after you repeat the order perfectly :bowthank:
“Just go back and get some free food” you say…think they will do any better the second time? No thanks
So first step is getting the motor in the house
get valve cover off
Take pics before everything get separated
(not my blurry handy work ^^^)
Document bolt lengths
Now record what bolts go with what part/assembly:
Water pump (duh)
Tensioner pully
Crank angle sensor orientation
and bolts
Overview of what I got done
This is the auto tensioner
It is a common failure part that will wreck your engine. This one seemed ok so I will probably reuse it.
As of now block is in shop to be cleaned, honed and ringed. While that is going on I will be cleaning trans (outside) and brushing any bolts necessary. Also prepping a clean environment for reassembly.
After some research I picked up an A1 rebuild kit off CL for $100. I can use all but the pistons and head gasket (debated) but to be 100% safe Im going to pick up the A4 (since im sure somebody will cry open vs closed deck design). Believe me I abuse the search button on multiple sources before spending a nickel on anything.
FYI reason pistons wont work is different wrist pin design. fixed (a1) vs floating (a4)
random update: still waiting on machine shop. Apparently projects in line before mine could have gone better (faster). Should be torn down today or tomorrow. Will need new mains since vin decode says the motor is from a 99 automatic <– . the 99s are within the range of 55mm mains transition from 50.
Got it back finally. On tuesday. Today I got started on reassembly. this is what I got so far:
Turns out it was a good plan to have the block honed. Said looked to be a good block but likely burned good amounts of oil.
My hope is to have it done by bday/xmas as a present to myself :manual:
No pics for this update. Got the intake manifold gasket removed. That took some patience and elbow grease with a razor blade Anyway, crank sensors installed as well. Got the timing covers clean. Working on getting rear balance shaft aligned then most everything should go back smoothly unless I have to wait on any other gaskets/seals. Like say the oil cooler gasket I cant find…:bang:
Doesn’t sound like much done but also did front bearings on a vw jetta as well. And now its time to go back to work. How do you guys find the time to do your builds, take pics/vid, edit pics/vid, upload pics/vid and still go to work, play with pets, kids, shop etc?! Maybe its easier if your not doing 60 hrs a week but it still cant be EASY.
again no pics but motor has been mounted in the car. Got AC, header and alternator mounted too. Couple hoses on and connectors done. soon be ready for first start up.
