Oil inside the I/C pipes....Is this good?

While on the way back home the other night, one of the clamps broke and let a pipe loose. As i was going to re-install with new a new clamp I noticed a good amount of oil in the pipes.

Ever since I installed the Turbo Kit, when I let her warm up on idle she will start to smoke with an oils smell. Then after driving her it go’s away. But when I come to a light, a lil smoke appears with that smell. I was thinking that the Oil Return Line on the oil pan is placed wrong. The Hole is, I think, to low so when the oil is going from the turbo to the oil pan it can not go in quick enouph there for making the Turbo burn oil…Or something like that…Another reason I think this is because I was shortening the oil return hose and all the motor oil came out from just that hose as I held it down…She never smoked any before the Turbo install…

Here is a pic of the Oil Return hole on the pan…

Any comment will help me greatly…Thanks…

Your return fitting should be at the highest point possible on the oil pan.

I just did some research and now see that my Oil return line hole is looking retarded compared to the correct way to do it…Shiii!!!

Also, oil inside IC piping sounds like a fucked up ventilation system. You have a catchcan?

I had the same thing happen on my prelude. The seals in the turbo may be gone. Take of the intake on the compressor housing and see if there is some oil coming from there. Also see if the turbo has any shaft play. Im almost certain that its the turbo.

I don’t have a catch can…Were can I place one and what is that for? I have heard that if the Turbo needs a rebuild that it will start to burn oil and then you will have the simptoms that I am haveing…So I will have to start saving for a rebuild…Great one more for the LIST…LOL…Thanks for all the help fellas…Much appreciated…

With all of these problems you’ve had, did you do any research at all before you put your turbo build together?

I did research…But thought that with the money that I was paying the shop to do the install that they would have done it all the correct way…But, now I have to fix some minor things…That is how I see it…Thanks.

i had a similar prob with mine smoking, i tried to just drive like that but one day it got really bad. i took my build apart and i had oil in the downpipe and oil in the intake side. i had someone look at it and i found out that i had blown out the oil seals and the oil was leaking into the down pipe and burning up. i had choice of rebuild kit or new turbo. for rebuild the only place around me wanted $400 - $450 then the rebuild kit was like $120. so for that $$$
i just saved and got a new turbo.

yup thats the same story. The locals wanted about 500-600 for mt saab turbo rebuld. So I just went along and paid about 750 for a brand new turbonetics turbo with a warrantee.

also for future info. Do tons of research so you can work on your own car. With a custom build you will be doing a bunch of tinkering on your new toy. If you take it to the shop everytime something happens your pockets will be empty.

For sure…I am now realizing this…Thanks for the info…I am going to save up a bit…Then take her apart and see what I could do…First thing is the Oil Pan…Then other things like the Oil Sending T…Then The Clutch and Fly Wheel…Then the brakes and brake lines…What a list…And it won’t stop there…LOL…Be safe…

If your return line it too low like yours is…it can back up and push past the oil seals in the turbo and can/will get into your charge piping and the intercooler.

Get a new oil pan, tap it correctly and see if it helps…if not, you need to rebuild the turbo or get another one.

Thanks…Will do…It is all in the doing…I will let you all know how she turns out…Other than that she is running great…
