I think it’s because it’s blending in w/ her skin.
Yeah, I had her too close to the backdrop and the light was bouncing off of it and hitting her. I noticed that after I took them; a lesson learned.
Im jealous of that flash setup
James, are those taken wih the sigma?
and I just ordered a second 430EX II :ohyeah:
I’ll have the pair of 430’s on the umbrella stands and the 580EX II on the camera. Should be plenty for now.
Babak, yes, it’s the Sigma. I’m extremely happy with it, especially for the price, but I think I’ll be picking up the Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L soon. That or the 70-200mm F/2.8L IS…still deciding. Hopefully by the end of the year I’ll have both of those, plus the 16-35mm F/2.8L II, but I don’t know what to get first. Then next year I’ll start looking to upgrade the camera and pick up a second body. (1D MKIII/5D MKII ??? )
well I think the message is clear… you’re rich
Yeah, the military pays big bucks. :giggle:
We just budget our money well. We should have all debts (mainly both cars) paid off in a 2 years. That frees up a lot of money. Plus I just got our yearly raise, in May I get a small bonus, plus a nice longevity raise and in November I should make E-6, which comes with an even nicer raise. In 2010 We should get the Alaska PFD, which was $13,000 for a family of 4 last year. :stare:
Hey Paul Wall, shoot some of that money over here.
Aren’t you an/aspiring to be an ATC? You’ll make 3 X what I make.
I am but this house buying stuff is killing me. Now stop changing the subject and help a g2member out
On the other hand, where have you been buying your flash and umbrella setups? I like bhphoto but they always seem to be the most expensive (besides sammys)
BHPhoto isn’t the cheapest but the support and reliability make up for it. I spent $6k with them last month.
I recommend either them or Adorama.com. I’ve had good experiences with them also.
+1 for adorama.
classic shutter speed experiment:
Looks good kyle, I would personally have gone for just a tad long shutter speed, but you’re on the right track. It’s all subjective anyways.
Do you happen to have a relative named Wes?

This.
I haven’t used Adorama, but I’ve heard nothing but good things. I personally use B&H almost exclusively.

Dude… all of these are so good. you’ve really come along way. great style and superb set up if one were to ask me, and your girl is so beautiful on top of all else. keep posting up more.
One tiny observation if you will, only because as a designer it pops out at me. If you have the ability to mix up the colors a little better, use a tight pallet of background and clothing selections. I know this is nit picky, but your right there… as a art director, you want to control every little thing, and if these picts of your girl had slightly better color selection, they’d be off the chart good. keep it up man, I love looking at her as she seems to love the camera:rockon:
From last night,
Softbox up and to the left, a reversed umbrella to the right and a 3rd flash head lighting up the backboard.

nope. i know one person named wes and he isn’t related.
Anyway, thanks a lot for the input. I think my biggest concern with slowing it down anymore was how the water looks in the bottom. looks like ice. but eh…it was my first shot with water falls. i’ll get more opportunities in the summer.

Thanks Schu, I appreciate it.
I’m not sure if I’m following you 100% on the suggestion. Do you mean to match the clothing with the background better? Or to use more colors in the background than a single color?

To be honest, there is NO golden rule. It’s just that when you see a see well sculpted still life, you know its right. Sometimes it is completely tonal, sometimes it is very contrasting in color. I do think the green background picture is very cool because it fills the need of being playful and child like in its coloration. That particular picture with some simple retouch is a completely marketable commodity.
When your shooting next time, try to think about communicating a message, whether it is a feeling or mood through color, or a literal message through how you use your subject in the picture. I’d like to see some themed pictures of her(or even your dog) or even natural setting outdoor pictures. Bottom line is that your girl really grabs the viewer and I LOVE looking at her in your pictures.
As a photographer, not only are you responsible for the technical aspects of your pictures, which clearly you have down, but you also set the tone and control the creativity of the pictures by applying thought in the way you communicate a message or feeling.
An example is (I know these are not your pictures)… but I would love to see these two Basketball boys in this exact same setting/lighting without the smiles on there faces… perhaps very serious or with there game face on. perhaps even in some very simple action oriented crouching pose… still looking directly at the camera as in a portrait. This would communicate the intensity needed to complete in a team sport. perhaps even a picture or two were they are together and worn out from playing tough game.
Overall both you guys are really really good… keep posting more pictures.
Thanks for the advice Schu, I will keep that in mind.
I’m still trying to get down the ‘working with people’ part of portrait photography, and I always feel like I have to come up with an idea quickly before the subject gets bored. All those pictures of my daughter were more for practice and getting used to the new flashes/backgrounds than actually shooting something meaningful, I just wanted to post a couple that I thought turned out alright.
Hopefully on my time off I can get my wife and both my kids in front of the camera and do some real work.
In the mean time, here’s a self portrait. I’m the worst in front of a camera, which is why I try to stay behind it.
