Picked up some GM Synchromesh Tranny Fluid yesterday...

I got 3 quarts and it came out to $27. i’m either gonna put it in tomorrow or Tuesday, probably Tuesday. Right now it grind in 3rd and 4th. It only grinds if I shift above 3.5k, but it is NASTY as hell if I am redlining it. Hopefully this stuff will help. Anyone got any tips for changing out the tranny fluid? Thanks, I’ll let you know if this helps my grinding.

$27 USD??? holy crap. I paid $24 CAD here for the same thing. I still haven’t put it in though. I was going to this weekend, but I noticed my axle seal’s leaking…

Theres 2 kinds of GM synchromesh. Friction modified = expensive, and the normal one = waste of money.

OK, I put it in today! The tranny is 50% smoother, but I still have that grind in 3rd. BTW, I was told that the normal version was the one to get! DAMN IT! After all that shit, it’s not even the good stuff. I changed my oil too today. I am pretty worn out now! But I would have to say that GM Synchromesh does help some, but not the miracle I was expecting. Good luck with yours dude, especially with your good price!!!

give it some time… it should stop most of the grinding… if it does, please reply to this post

Are you serious? It takes time to stop the grinding? I thought that it would have stopped by now if it was going to. If you are right, that is great news!!! I’ll let you guys know. BTW, if you leave off the washer for the oil drain plug, it’s not gonna leak is it? LOL, thanks!

Honda Transmission fluid is just 5w30 oil.

I was told this by my mechanic, Honda Acura specialists, they know what they’re talking about.

Wait a minute – wasn’t it your dealership that said they’ll “resurface” your distributor rotor at a tune-up???

Actually it’s true that Honda MTF is 30 weight oil, but a lot of people have claimed that the GM Syncromesh fluid helps with Honda transmissions grinding and notchiness, etc.

Honda MTF is not “just 5W30 oil”. It’s actually 10W30 oil with special additives to protect your transmissons internals. Read your owners manual. It says to use 10W30 or 10W40 oil, only because Honda MTF wasn’t available before 1993. In later Hondas, 10W30/40 oil is said to be used as only a temporary lubricant.

How do you know which kind of GM MTF youre buying? Will it say on the bottle? Do you ask for the good shit? I was thinking about grabbing some…

There was a member from alberta not long ago that phoned his Acura dealer about a tune up and he kept asking what about his distributor rotor, and the person at the dealership kept telling him “yeah, we’ll resurface them…” (referring to the brake rotors of course)

Can’t remember who it was though…

Yes mine took about a week for most of the grinding to go away. BTW, i used the normal one (not friction modified) and it worked well.

 i dunno man. as far as atf, honda atf has proven results. id need some pretty compelling evidence that the gm stuff works before trying. otherwise a complete flush with honda fluid should be done first.

ya man that’s what I was thinking, GM or Honda? Honda shit’s always the best, personally I’d need to see some real time-tested evidence before using that stuff.

but i guess if you’re grinding then your tranny’s on the way anyways though…

Yeah, but if you’re using MTF and noticing grinding, etc… not much to lose by going with GM right?

People that have been around here for awhile will remember that the same thing was once said about Redline MTL. Back around 97 or so, just about every performance minded Honda owner was driving around with Redline in the tranny.

I suspect that the GM fluid is quite similar to Honda’s. Either way, fresh fluid doesn’t hurt. It’s true that Honda knows their cars best and recommends their own special fluids, but they also say the same thing about their batteries, wipers, and “Genuine Honda Keychains”…
