Pinging

My car pings at WOT at anything past ~3600 rpm. I recently replaced the stock B17a1 with a rebuilt b18c1. The B18 has been bored to 81.5 mm, yeilding 1824 cc of displacement. I also am running 9.0:1 JE pistons and the stock B17a head.

I do not have enough money to finish the project right now, but I have to solve this pinging problem. Any suggestions? As far as fuel and ignition goes, I am running stock everything. I am running it like this with the stock ECU at the suggestion of MACE and a few others over at hondatech…

BTW does anyone in NH have a wideaband?

obviously did you check timing?

Yeah make sure you have your base timnig set properly. Also, what octane fuel? and what ECU are you running? not the stock b17 one are you?

yes. i had the same probl;em. it is a spark issue. i had a bad distributor(common) and old wires. by replacing the wires it cleared up alot, and the distributor cleared the issue. whats happening is you are not fully combusting the fuel in your cylinder. also check your plugs for carbon. replace if necessary

This is a misfire problem…not pinging. 2 Totally different scenarios!

I AM still using the stock ECU (b17). The engine is a B18c1 block with a b17a1 head. It has 9.0:1 JE pistons (81.5 mm bore) in it but the actual compression is somewhere around 8.8:1 because the b17 combustion chambers have higher displacement. It seems to ping regardless of the fuel grade I put in it… I am almost certian that it only happens when the ECU is in closed open loop though.

BTW I set the dizzy to full retard, and the plugs are NGK platinum tip #6, new. The car bogs bad between 4 and 5 thousand if you give it too much throttle, I am pretty sure it happens becuase the ecu is pulling out all the timing it can when it sees the knocking.

try a standard copper V pwoer NGK plug heat range 7. also should get a wideband to see what’s going on with your fueling. How does your plugs look?

We will see if I can afford one over break here. I have to rip this block back apart too because the head gasket is leaking oil like a sieve. I don’t really know what to do about that one since I used a new OEM head gasket with a resurfaced head and arp studs.
