Pipping

This may be a dumb question, but even though i custom built my turbo setup, do i need to have custom pipping made, or can i just buy a pipping kit? And if i can buy just a kit what brand makes good pipping?

carparts.com

check out http://www.carparts.com , they sell hedman’s a “box of mandrel bends” which is made for exhausts, but they should have the size you need for a turbo. I hvent really looked into it much but you should check it out.

I got all mine custom built, because no one offered a kit for the way that I wanted the piping run…
Cost for materials and labor was 600.00.
Ask around at fabrication/exhaust shops, they are more helpfull than you think.

Any idea if i can buy the drag pipping all by itself without the IC?

Thats what truly separates a piece togther(custom) turbo setup from a bolt-on(DRAG/RH/F-MAX) setup. Doing the piping is the hardest part. Just takes time. Buy a bunch of mandrel U-bends( cheapest place is www.jcwhitney ), test fit, cut label and mark, then get it welded. Or you can buy full drag ic piping from ben@importparts.com which cost around 500.

should i go with 2 1/2" or 3" IC pipping

How much boost are you planning on running? If your going moderate boost >16psi, I would say 2 1/2" piping. 3" is going to affect your responsiveness.

i was thinking about running 15lbs daily driven, then cranking it up at the track on race fuel to 23-25lbs…

2 1/2" should be fine.

Just from what i’ve read 2 1/2" to 3" would be fine from the intercooler to the throttle but that big of piping from the turbo to the intercooler would cause pressure loss and that’s not good. i would have to agree and go with 2 1/2" piping. exhaust piping… well that’s a totally different story.

i was gonna do a custom down pipe…3 inch all the way until the downpipe hits the curve, then going back to 2 1/2" or something like that

Jeff

BTW i have 2 1/2 inch exhaust from the cat back

I did a little more research on piping. For the best results, 2" from the turbo to the intercooler, 2 1/2" from the intercooler to the throttle body, and 3" for the downpipe and exhaust. You want your exhaust to be as free-flowing as possible. It’s your money and your car, but 3" will be a tight fit. Thermal R&D makes a turbo cat-back for our tegs but for the downpipe, you might have to do a little research. I have heard of people using a Buschur downpipe from the DSM’s though I’m not really definite on that. Hope this helps out and good luck with your car.

Ok, 2.5" Intercooler piping is max, any bigger will just increase lag. Most common is 2"-2.25" turbo to intercooler pipe and 2.25"-2.5" intercooler to tb pipe. Remember, intercooler piping are measure in outer diameter. As for exhaust. back pressure doesnt help for turbo so, 3" all the way.

so my 2 1/2" HKS hiper catback does me no good? where can i get a 3" downpipe anyone know any sites that will sell just the downpipe?

Jeff

3" downpipe to 2.5" exhaust. bottleneck exhaust cant be good. If you bought a turbo kit, it should come with a 2.5" down pipe.

2.5" on the downpipe going to a 3" exhaust should be fine. I would have major fitment probs if my downpipe was bigger than 2.5". I have like 1/8" clearance between my downpipe and oil pan/front crossmember.

well, where can i get a downpipe?

i am gonna order my mandrel bends tonight, but what material? Aluminized mandrel bends run about 10 bucks each from JC Whitney, they also have t304 stainless for about 25 bucks each…
