Purchasing Turbo ... Need Help On Selection

Hey guys what’s up. To make sure my car is not all show and no go … the turbo kit has been put together and is ready to ship. Here’s the parts list

4-1 Cast Iron manifold

Deltagate Wastegate
Garrett T3/T4 T04B Turbocharger
Greddy Blow-off valve
Vortech Fuel Management Unit
2 1/4 Chrome Piping
Spearco Intercooler
MAP sensor bypass valves
High pressure Inline fuel pump
Silicon hoses and clamps
Steel braided oil feed lines
Oil return line
2 1/2 inch DRAG down pipe
Vacuum tee’s
Vacuum line’s

upgrade turbo to a TO4E
upgrade piping 2 1 1/2
your choice on a blow off valve (blitz, greddy, HKS)
1year warranty on manifold against cracking

Now a couple o Qs:

I’m planning to boost about 8psi daily and perhaps 13psi at the track. Well I rarely go to the track so daily is my main concern. My motor’s internals is mostly stock with about 106,000 miles on it. I plan on purchasing the following but with the money I just spent on my bodywork and new rims, I’m trying to limit my spending. The following are things I intend to purchase:

Wiseco 9:0 Pistons — How would the idle be on this?
Eagle Rods
Titanium springs/retainers
New Clutch

Now the plan is to just drive around with 8psi for a while and perhaps next summer boost it up to 13psi.

  1. Which of these components can I disregard for now since I’ll just be driving around at 8psi?

  2. What’s the lag gonna be like with the upgraded turbo? How much can I boost with a T04E?

  3. Which BOV should I choose that’s fairly quiet. I really don’t have a need to wake up the dead.

  4. What else would I need to have a safe and reliable setup - ie. fpr, boost controller, ignition mgmt., etc.?

Once again I turn to my fellow teggers for their knowledge. Let me know guys/gals, I wanna purchase this right away before winter hits. I thank you all in advance.

Re: Purchasing Turbo … Need Help On Selection

First let me say three things:

One: Your car rocks
Two: THANK YOU for posting something in this forum that is productive.
Three: THANK YOU for using proper english and punctuation.

Ok now onto the questions

Your list sounds very good.

The pistons wont change the idle by themselves. With the fuel properly set up the car will idle like stock. Although you will get that horrible sound on cold startup until those forged pistons expand to the proper size

On 8psi you on pump gas you don’t need forged pistons or rods. Even 13psi at the track on race gas you still don’t need forged pistons. The titanium springs/retrainers really will only benefit you if you plan on going past your factory redline. You can make lots of power even with the factory valve train though.

I have no first hand knowledge of spool time. That turbo on a 2L DSM with 7.8:1 or 8.5:1 compression is about 3700rpm or so.

The greddy type S is what you should choose then.

FPR is a good idea. Make sure you get one that increases FP when boost kicks in  Boost controller is up to you. If you have the $$$ eletronic controllers (except the AVCR-BAD!) are good investments. The HKS EVC EZ is a good controller. Ingition management is something else I dont know a lot about on integras. Something as simple as an MSD DIS-2 might do the trick, but you may need something more complex or nothing at all. Some one else will have to comment on that one.

If I’ve made any mistakes or anyone else has other opinions feel free to chime in. The more the marrier.

Which manifold are you going with? SFP, InlinePro, MaxRev and RevHard are good. I would ditch the Deltagate and go with a TiAL 35mm wastegate. What engine do you have? If you have an LS and plan not taking it past 8 lbs. the T3/T04B will spool nice and early but if you want more boost I think you should step up to the T3/T04E. A decent sized T3/T04E is good enough for 350-400 whp. Like Formz said, you can hold off on the pistons and rods if you’re gonna be running only 8 psi. Ditch the DRAG downpipe and go full 3" from the turbo back. I suggest investing in some gauges like boost, egt, oil pressure, and fuel pressure to be on the safe side.

Looks good bro, I’m diggin the black roof and pillars. How’d the kit fit? Any shots of the front and back? Good luck.

The T04B housing has been around before the 70s. The T04E technology although not cutting edge is much more efficient and would be a wise investment.

The Deltagate could only wish for the performance that is offered by the Tial 35mm. It too is a very good investment.

If your setup (a/c) allows room for a 3" downpipe go for it, but a 2.5" downpipe will be sufficient.

good luck

Matt: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. And one more thank you for clearing up the questions I was having regarding this investment.

Bill & FFD: I think I’ll go with the T3/T04E looking ahead I may want to boost the begeezus out of her and go full race … you never know.

FFDragger: The kit fits fine but it wasn’t a perfect fit initially. With some magic from my friends at the car shop it fits just right now.

As per request:

Thanks Matt as well for clearing up some of that. Jigs, I’ll be following your progress on here, in hopes to gain a little info on my setup!

Matt, one question? You honestly think the stock pistons/rods will withstand daily 8psi? I really don’t want to boost more than say 9 lbs anyway, but while I’m rebuilding things, it wouldn’t hurt to throw in some forged units, right? Let me know what you think!

Oh yea stock pistons and rods will definitely handle 8psi. Just make sure you’re tuned correctly  But ofcourse forged units will never hurt

Sorry but i just have to say the back end of your teg is sweet!!!
and how did you get the black trim to stay so black (around the windows and doors)

does anyone have anything to say about the tial hybrid 35/40 wastegate? would it not be too ideal for low boost? just curious

tial hybrid? huh?

That’s what I was thinking.

There is a Tial hybrid wastegate that doesn’t seem to be too known. I dunno how new it is or anything, but I’ve only heard of it in the last couple of months. I forget exactly what they did, but I think it was something like putting a 40mm valve in a 35mm housing. It’s something along those lines. I don’t know any more about it as far as advantages or anything though.

40mm valve in 35mm housing = the suck

I’m sure tial wouldnt do that. it must be something different.

no Tial does offer it. its mainly for people who want the performance the internals of the Tial40 offers but want the 35 housing for some reason, be it mounting or size limitations.

the tial 40 is a lot more than just being 5mm bigger.
