The purpose of this is to show that even with a budget, you can build a decent daily without giving into the temptation of using SHITTY parts.
I’m 32, have two little kids, work full time, and have my kids almost 24/7 outside of work…so this will go fairly slow, but I believe this will show the kids coming up these days that even you can build something respectable from $10/hr. Now I make quite a bit more than that, but I have a mortgage, bills, and mouths to feed…so this is all relative in terms of funds that will be available. MANY of the parts I will find used when I can.
Rundown on the car:
1992 GSR
144K miles on stock B17A motor
Needs a new fender, and a total respray (it has some shitty ass orange peel paint job)
My plan of attack is to first lightly mod the B17A to uncork a few extra HP’s:
ITR Intake Manifold
ITR 4-1
Full 2.5" exhaust from the header back
ITR cams
Suspension:
Coilovers
Some chassis stiffening (nothing major strut bars, sway bars)
Wheels:
These will probably be last item on the build, but here’s a few ideas:
Mugen RNR’s
Mugen NR-10’s
Volk TE-37’s
RH CP035’s
Spoon SW388’s
96 ITR setup
Exterior:
Fender replacement
Front bumper converted back to 92-93
Full respray
1-piece headlights
Interior:
Nothing. Interior is MINT.
I will be upgrading the stereo system eventually though.
Overall this will be one of those 1-2 parts every paycheck type of deals.
Paint looks good in pictures, maybe needs a wet sanding.
Your plans look good and seems like you know where you want to go with this car.
Glad you figured running issues and good luck!
Thanks! The paint is one of those “50 yard fakeouts” lol
Looks good from afar, but up close…it’s chipping, MAJOR orange peel, bubbling, etc. It definitely needs to be sanded down and repainted. I do want to stick with the original Milano Red though, so the prep work shouldn’t be TOO bad. And because it looks ok from afar I won’t be painting it till I’m almost finished with everything else I want to get done.
good from far, far from good… lol
I’d vote for the Mugen RNR’s or TE37’s in time attack trim… YUM YUM
Why not throw in some JDM ITR pistons to bump the compression up some more? You’ll definitely make more power~!
We’ll see what happens down the road, but right now I’m not really interested in getting into the block because I’m the type to just redo everything at that point lol…and I just don’t want to drop that kind of coin on the motor at this stage of things.
If I do anything block-wise…it will be swapping in a B18C block with higher comp. pistons, but that would be a LONG ways out barring anything catastrophic happening (blowing the motor).
32 here, bought a 93 GSR almost a year ago. Searched 5 years for one w/o rust and stock. Luckily it is a project car so can take my time with her. You can view my build thread if you search my screen name. Great car to begin with! Looks great!
Looks like a very good car to start with, Black RNRs would look very nice with red. Really glad to hear you are avoiding the crap parts, I did the same thing right after I bought a Megan header.
If you are going to go with black rnr’s or 37’s (which would look sweet IMO), you might think about having black moldings to really make it pop. Again my opinion.

budget build FTW! I feel budget builds generate more pride and respect for the owner because its more of a challenge to do “correctly”. So props to you.
I picked up a set of 17" fully polished and refinished Centerline wheels. These wheels weren’t in my plans but I couldn’t pass them up for the price. They will look great for days when I want a mid-late 90’s throwback look…dumped on 17’s FTW.
duuuude I remember your gold 4 door and you absolutely raping that turd kevinm lol. Love your approach here we are in the same boat expect my gsr is white. If you get it repainted def replace that bumper and black red rnr would be killer.
lol that guy turned out to be a total fucking toolbag. Thanks tho man, I appreciate the input…I think RNR’s would be the way to go as well. I really want Spoons too, but if I snag RNR’s I’ll just flat black my Slipstreams, fuck it.
Those Centerline rims look generally EXACTLY like the sliptreams, other than finish and size… Sadly I doubt anyone will be able to tell the difference. Must have been a good deal to get almost exact rims.
I scored them cheaper than used Rotas are going for lol…so yeah, I hopped right on it. Everyone was scared to even take a chance because they are 17’s…but rubbing doesn’t bother me, my last 4-dr. Civic was dropped pretty low on 17" Racing Hart Type-C’s and I managed just fine.
