Rebuilding shift linkage

I have all kinds of slop in my shifter, and after inspecting things underneath it seems as though the slop is in the linakge not the transmission. The transmission probably isn’t as tight as it used to be either but i’d like to start by making sure the linkage is up to snuff.

Does anyone make an after market linkage?

If not anyone know if it is still possible to buy any of these parts?

are there some common fixes i could try first?

sitting in my car, if you nudge the shifter it basically flops side to side about 6 inches… :tsk:

from what i’ve seen, usually the bushings around the shifter wear out and will cause “sloppyness”. most parts you can get from the dealer.

I have this same problem. I tried putting ES bushings on the stabilizer and was disappointed to see it didn’t solve it, though it made shifting feel better. I think what ^ was saying is what the problem is. When I put in a short throw I am going to replace all the crap that is worn but I havent had the time yet. I think it’s the O rings. It’s not the linkage though.

delray acura, the place i used for my last order, doesn’t list these parts as being available. anyone suggested another good online source?

search for threads on here…people have listed the parts before

i know i can search for dealers… i was wondering if anyone has had success sourcing these parts at a particular spot.

anyone ever buy these parts b4?

Yes. Everything is available from an acura dealership.

If that doesn’t work, honda parts are the same. Pretty much all those wear items are interchangeable with any run of the mill civic.

i’ve kinda fixed mine. if u take things apart under ur shifter u’ll see whats wrong. #7 & #12 are things that even a short shifter kit and es shifter bushings can’t help. #7 kinda keeps things centered and #12 kinda does the same stuff but within #15 and #9. i bought the b&m edge shifter i think… whichever is the dual bend one… it also came with the o rings, the ones that go over the grooves on #13. and the ones that go on the outer sides of them which looks to be #3 & #4 (as long as they go on opposite sides of #13. u can also fix some of the slop by tightening up #23 & #25 both 12mm bolt/nut.

good luck on trying to get some of these parts, my local acura dealership said it would take about a week, so i said forget it. i just installed the es bushings, the short shifter, the new o rings, put the grease on the recommended parts and went on my way. feels firm now =) only thing is that those dust boots #6,7,12 are all torn or gone on mine… so i’ll prolly be relubing mine regularly to kinda keep it smooth.

When I installed the B&M short shift lever (straight), here’s the parts I have replaced and the shift feels better with little to no sloppiness.

By sloppiness you mean by wiggling it on neutral and when in gear:

#3, #4, #5, #8, #11, #12, #13, #16, #19, #24 (used the ones that came with the B&M kit),

Where the arrows are pointing at. The part that swivels. Is it suppose to be tight or loose? My shifter has a lot of side play and seems like it’s from that part. I also need to replace #12 cuz it’s torn and i can see the ball. There’s also a boot where the arrows are at. Where #14 plugs into the tranny. That part is ripped and caked hard. I believe I’m leaking tranny fluid from there. Correct me if I’m wrong. Yeh, I need that boot but I don’t see it on the picture.

Nevermind, I found the boot

#2

idk man I could swear the problem is right there under the shifter, it’s like you can feel it

well, of course that area needs replacing. i’m pretty sure that would be the cause of most sloppiness that everyone can have. my question is the swivel part of #14. is that part (arrows pointing at the area being questioned) suppose to be tight or loose? it would make sense if it’s suppose to be tight. but i have my doubts and that it’s suppose to be loose a bit since no one has given any input.

i’m probably going to the junkyard tomorrow to check that part if there is any 5spd g2’s there.

What’s the condition of the bushing there? It could be worn out. Regardless I would get the set of stabilizer bar bushings from Energy Suspension and throw them in when you have the bar out. They are only like $13 and have a great feel.

thanks. i have the es bushings already. still no one answered the real question i have. included is a video.

thanks

Ok, well i fixed my issue. Well, improved it anyway. i found that my play was mainly in the bottom part of the shifter, part numbers 3,4,5 and 24 were all whooped. Once i had it all apart i didn’t want to disable my car until i got the new parts so i took apart an old CRX si linkage and stole the shifter and associated parts from that. the slop is MUCH better, but i plan on ordering a new shifter and linkage shortly.

iogearz,

Brand new, the linkage does not have play like yours does. Mine has about the same amount of play, and that is why i am replacing it.

fastasleep, thanks for the update. i just need someone to confirm that it’s suppose to be tight. $50 new from acura. sure why not. i’m gonna order the other parts as well.

mine was really sloppy,

in every gear it moved like it was in neutral.

when I took things apart and found that part number 25 was loose.
I took a wrench and tightened it up and not a single other problem.

I didn’t bother looking under there at first so i bought a new shifter and some ES bushings and when i got up there it was just a loose bolt.
