Remove pink lines in 90-91 tails without taking tails apart

i dont know if you guys went over how careful you need to be when removing and installing the tail lights, but my advice is, after removing the 6 or so 8mm nuts, get a hammer and tap the outer bolts to loosen the housing. don’t pry it out by the housing. tap the outer bolts, then tap the other bolts. the outer ones will need the most punishment. tap the outer ones until they start pushing out. then continue with the rest in even stages.
when installing, be careful not to overtorque these little nuts. i broke one of them. i would even go so far as to keep it slightly under the specified torque by one or two pounds since they are so old.

Good tip Xdeep. He is absolutely correct there. Another tip too: if you have a second set of tails, re-use the extra gaskets to double up for a little extra protection. Just be escpecially careful then not to overtorque like X said.

Here’s mine BTW after getting them installed.

damn why didnt they make the tails clear stock, it looks so much better

I think they originally came RED. Not pink. It probably looked great then. I’ll try to find some pics.

I used Simple Green to clear mine. It took like 4 tries each.

I’m going to remove the paint off the old ones and redo them using the teg tips instructions for the amber bumper lights.

Here how mine turned out.

  1. Patience is a virtue.
  2. Foam weather stripping=3$ from wal mart. replaces gaskets with no problem.
  3. Junk Yard or ebay=spare/new tail lights.

here is my lights. … let me know of what you think

wow… looking good!! It stands out even better on the black tegz…

db2-you said you used simple green. i tired it and after 2 tries it didnt look like it did anything at all. so i gave up…how much did you use per tailight? and did you boil the water or what?

^ You can’t get castrol super clean?

id really like to thank you guys. this was by far the best 6 dollar mod i have done to my car. i bought a gallon of the stuff and ended up not even using a quart. i just boiled some water, let if cool off for a couple minutes and then poored a cup in the light, then 1/4 a cup of the super clean and another 1/4 cup of water. you guys were right on the spot about the hot water. i took only one time to completely strip the pink off.

White… I didn’t even use 1/4 of the bottle… and i just used the hot water from the sink.
I attempted to use bleach, which I quickly… decided not to use… because the smell was killing me.
I tried that in one of the lights for about 10 mins… shaking… and rattling and roling. I noticed no change in color of the pink lines. I then washed out the bleach… and went in the garage looking for anything else that might work.
I saw the simple green and decided to give it a shot.
I sprayed [stream] the simple green stright from the bottle into the holes… and added hotwater from the sink… shaked… rattled and rolled…but no dice. The color = still pink. I held the light over my head… looking @ it from underneath… and noticed that there is a thin space between the casing and the lense inside the lights. I also noticed that there was not alot of water in that little space. I then refilled lights with a mixture of simple green and hotwater… and I held the lights over my head again and angled it till I saw the space filled with water… then in a “baby cradling/rocking motion”… swished around for a few mins… repeated for about 15 mins… and bamn!! white lines.

THANKS!

just did it and love it! will post pics tomorrow when i put them back on.

how long does it take for the tail lights to dry? and how should i position the tail lights so that i dont end up with water stains??

I used a hair dryer and it only took about 10-15 mins (each side) to dry out completely. I pointed the hair dryer into one bulb opening and opened another bulb opening on the opposite end of the housing to get the air to circulate and remove the moisture. I rigged it up so that I didn’t have to hold the hair dryer in place by hand. Just check on it occassionally to make sure the hair dryer hasn’t moved and also to check that it didn’t melt the plastic (which it shouldn’t if you use a hair dryer- but you never know).

I am going to do this, this weekend.

Will post pics.

You would be suprised how different the tails look without the pink until its gone. Roughly 100x better.
Before

after

A side by side with a sexy shot of a gallon of super clean. I couldnt find a spray bottle but a gallon was only 4 bucks at wal mart. I only used a few capfuls too.

It only takes a little under 2 hours, with the hardest parts bieng removing the tails and getting the suds out of the tails. Clearing the pink actually took like 10 seconds. there’s my 2c

I wouldnt worry about them drying, all you need to do is tilt the tails and all the water will flow out on its own, maybe a few drops stay behind. I used a hair drier to finish the job. Just make sure to have the water out of the bulb sockets before you reinstall them. Speaking of which, did anyone else find it odd that our amber turn bulbs have 2 filiments yet only one terminal has a wire leading to it? Am I alone in seeing this?
