That is pricey but not outrageous. If you guys hadn’t wanted 3 different colors it probably would have cut the price down a bit. Really though you could get one of those dress up kits for about that much but it wouldn’t look even close to that good. The best part about the zinc plating is that it still looks really OEMish.
So the entire bolt/threads were coated? I was thinking it was just the head…
Dang, that’s pretty thin and strong stuff to still thread in.
Looks awesomely clean though… you guys are making me feel terrible about my bay lol.
It’s an electroplating process I’m pretty sure. All of the bolts came coated that way from the factory. Ever notice how all of your OEM bolts have a yellow/gold color to them? That’s zinc. Honda has since switched over to using silver colored zinc coating on all of their hardware for environmental reasons. So now when you order new bolts from Honda they are silver, not gold. We wanted gold so that they looked like they did brand new from Honda. Of course it doesn’t match exactly, this gold is a slightly different color, and it will even look different on different alloys or even the age of the metal. It’s pretty strange really. Here’s a sample of all 3 colors we had done:
And don’t worry, I put all this effort into mine and the avg person won’t even notice half of the little things I spent way too much time on. And then there’s the fact that in 6 days I’m just going to spin out into the dirt infield covering the entire car in dirt anyway
Yeah, one color would have been $150, unless we would have done all of this hardware that color, then it would have been heavier than the minimum. Splitting it with people is really the way to go, if you’re doing it on your own it’s not really a good bang for the buck. I assume different places will have very different pricing though.
Indeed I have noticed the gold finish on older OEM bolts, and the more silver finish on newer hardware…
It’s just amazing how thin the coating is… I’ve seen people powdercoat bolts and hope they’ll thread in correctly, only to be sorely disappointed.
On a side note, congrats on your recent pick-up Mike… I’m super jealous, again. I hate you CA guys lol.
Colin- I’d love to split the bill with someone but unfortunately I don’t know anyone around me that is doing anything close to this thorough of an overhaul. I love the look of the gold but I don’t want to steal your idea so maybe I’ll go with black. Decisions, decisions…
Do they prep the hardware too? Is that included in your cost? I’m sure that a solvent bath and some sort of etching process is required for the plating to make the bond last.
Unified- Thanks! I was going to hold off for a bnib set of one pieces but those look pretty damn close to mint so I’ll settle… Lol. I was really just concerned with the condition of the reflectors and he assured me they’re in good condition so I think I got a great deal on them. Thank you aftermath!

im jealous and hating
This looks beautiful. I was tempted to get the aftermarket bolts, but this looks really nice.
Also like how you used the heat tape on the oil pan were the header passes

on the information
Pretty much everything we brought in was clean, but I assume they did some sort of process to it. Also, this plating process doesn’t work well with stainless steel.
Thanks Jose. I’m not a big fan of the aftermarket bolts because they don’t look stock - but that’s just my style. Plus everyone seems to switch to cap head style bolts but I prefer the stock flange head style where you use a socket instead of an allen wrench. All new silver colored hardware would still look pretty darn good though, really just depends on the style you go with. I opted for gold on almost all of the bolts that came gold from the factory, but then I changed some other things. For example, the hardware which was going to be on my motor mounts I had done in silver so they would blend in with the polished mounts and not stand out as gold on silver. Overall I wanted things to be subtle. With the exception of a different intake and having you paint my valve cover I think my bay is actually done now
I was going to buy all new hardware as silver bolts compliment my motor and engine bay but if this route is cheaper and still looks great I wouldn’t mind doing the zinc coating instead.

i’d like to get the goldish plated bolts too.
i’m for sure interested hehe.
Shipping a heavy box of hardware 2 directions wouldn’t be that cost effective either though. Sometimes I wish I lived closer to established civilization…
Your welcome mike. Ill text you some detailed pictures tonight. I’m going to package the lights in the box that I got.
When I opened your for sale thread Mike already pulled the trigger damn Mike always fast haha. Now Ive been saving for his catback exhaust I forgot the brand what is it again Mike? Lol!!!
Let me first start off by saying thank you for the passenger headlight.
You will be quite amazed at what it is going to look like when I am done.
This build is coming along great. Awesome those recaros are going to look great.
In my opinion I think you should go with the gold zinc color on your bolts too. its not copying anyone cause that’s how they came from the factory.
I have never have sent my hardware off to be recoated but I have always collected the cleanest bronze/gold oem bolts from every car I have ever stripped. most original super clean 6x1.0 thread 10mm head bolts can be found under dashboards at the junk yard.
I personally feel that the cap head/ allen key bolts should be reserved for European cars but to each their own.
keep it coming with the updates.
all these builds are helping to keep me sane.
keep up the great work
Terbong-I always gotta pounce on the deals! My catback is a greddy sp2. I love how these exhausts sound!
Tom-You got the headlight already? I’m interested to see what you do with it!
I’m actually really leaning away from the gold hardware. Although it would be more OEMish I don’t think it would match with anything else in my bay. Kinda leaning towards black just because its already my accent color on several parts in the bay. We shall see though…
Thanks for checking it out! Hoping to get some more updates soon!
So no pictures for you guys but I did take my welder and drop it off to have it serviced. I’m tired of messing with it and getting no results and just figured leave it to a professional who has more experience troubleshooting than me. I honestly don’t even know why I dragged my feet on taking it somewhere for so long. Bad news is the guy said he won’t have time to get to it for about 2 weeks…
I have ordered quite a bit of stuff lately that I’m looking forward to getting.
-ESP traction bar
-jdp oe2 92-93 front lip
-jdm headlights
-nrg short hub/quick release/lock
-greddy shift knob with pearl white sticker
-92-93 jdm front bumper support
-cdm seatbelts and pillar covers (except c covers, still need them)
Yeah I got the headlight last Thursday morning.
check my build thread for the pictures of the current progress on it.
Are you going to be doing the welding for the seat belt install yourself?
I have always wanted a DA or DB1 with the CDM seat belt conversion
I think that when I sell my ej6 sedan I am going to pick up a mint DB1 and just have a nice restored DB with everything functional. either a db1 or if I am lucky I will get a db2.
oh and let me know how you like that esp traction bar cause I am torn between just making my own or purchasing one.

Those should be easiest to source, you can start asking people in Canada and probably find someone willing to ship since they aren’t that big. But if you need something to hold you over you can use this stuff. I know painting interior parts is a bit ghetto, but this stuff actually works really well. We used it to turn our RX7 rally car dash from brown to black and it looked great. I also used it for the headliner and sun visors in my car.
Hondatom- yes I’ll be welding them in myself. It’s a pretty simple install I should think. I really like having a db1 as w daily. It’s so much easier to to get kids in and out and carry stuff around. I used to hate that about my DA. I think you’d definitely like dailying a db1.
And I’ll definitely post up my review one the traction bar. I’ve heard really good things about the ESP except that when you order it directly from them you experience ridiculous wait times. Luckily I found someone who had bought it and abandoned they’re project, so wait time should be short.
Colin- I’ve never been a fan of using any types of paint on any interior panels. You really liked the results with that stuff though? How long has it been since you originally painted stuff with it? I’d be especially weary of it over the long term. I might not have a choice for my headliner though. I can’t imagine how much shipping from Canada would be for something that big. It’s hard to even find a clean RS headliner in the states. I don’t know which I like the idea of less though, vinyl paint or recovering it…
Yeah, I always thought it was ghetto as all hell and wanted no part in it. Then we put together our RX7 rallyX car and it had brown interior. We figured “fuck it”, lets paint it. Here are a couple pics:

It works really well on fabrics or anything that it can soak into a little. Obviously anything smooth or harder will be more difficult to get good adhesion and is more likely to chip/flake. I wouldn’t use it willy-nilly but I do think it has some good applications - for example, a temporary solution to you not having the c-pillars. It probably wouldn’t match perfect, but it’ll look better than black a/b pillars and gray c-pillars. Plus it’s not something that will see a lot of wear like a door panel, so I wouldn’t worry about it chipping or anything.
Here are some pics of the headliner I put in my car. It didn’t clean up as well as I’d wanted, so I figured I’d try painting it. I wish I had pics of it in the car. I should probably take those now that I have access to a fisheye lens. So far it’s been plenty durable and looks great IMO, but as you know my car doesn’t see much use, so it’s likely not a good judge of durability. I also painted the sun visors and the associated plastic clips/brackets/etc. And the plastic clips which the sun visors “clip” into are starting to chip a little. But that’s a really high wear spot since you’re basically rubbing paint on paint every time you move the sun visor. I originally painted all of this on my car 4yrs ago, which is probably 8k miles of use. No wear other than the little clip things I already mentioned. And I’ve wiped the headliner down a handful of times with simple green or interior cleaner or whatever I was using at the time (the car gets VERY dirty inside when I spin out and go on my off track excursions, lol).

Also, from your statement it sounded like you were going to try and source a CDM headliner? I could be forgetting, but I thought the CDM headliner was the same as the USDM one (gray) and that the only difference was the color of the pillars.
It looks like it works well. I definitely could see it working better on vinyl than plastics. I’m a bit surprised to nor see any “zebra” stripes on the bigger panels like the dash and headliner. Definitely looks like a promising product!
For some reason I was thinking the CDM black interior cars came with the black headliner but I could be mistaken. In that case there would be no benefit to getting a CDM one. I seem to remember mine having a small rip though so I’ll need to replace it or recover it.
Do you know the difference on the USDM and CDM carpet? Also I’m on the hunt for a black passenger c pillar CDM too. I got a set from a member but that pillar came to me trashed so i need to replace it.
