short shifter pro&cons

I am undecided on whether not to buy a short shifter or not. I have heard that b&m and skunk2 are some of the best out there, but i have also heard that
short shifters can wear out ur synchros fast, and also shifting isnt as smooth and becomes notchy. I was wondering is these are true or not or if anyone as come across these problems. Also what is the difference between getting a single bend and a double?
Thanks

well it does make a hella good improvement. its good to have if you are concerned about the extra split second added that comes with the stock shifter. My short shifter is for a civic but it is the same part number but it rattles of my downpipe and i and ive read about others who have a few problems like mine are downshifting to second gear and always the best. quite a few times have i had to bog it down and go into third because i cant get it in. the notchiness is also true i think. mine is at stock height and i like it that way… less confusion for people driving my car. but its just a lot different feel but i personally like it despite the cons. its just a personal taste… oh and as far as single bend goes thats what i got and ive driven tegs that have the dualbend and its a completely different feel and i like it much better so if you dont mind spending a little bit more id say go with a dualbend short shifter.

Depending on the design, you generally lose leverage so it causes notchy shifting and more effort. Hopefully the knob or shifter itself is counterweighted to alleviate this problem.

as with the syncros i’m not sure.

If you want better shifting, get a Type R shift linkage with shifter.

You don’t lose leverage, but you gain a gated feel because the change exchange is on the shift linkage is thicker/beefier. Couple that with ES bushings, the shifter feels WAY better then any short shifter and you won’t end up damaging your transmission from using a short shifter.

Almost all race cars i’ve seen or helped with never used a short shifter, non of the drivers believed in any gains from it and it damaged the tranny. These guys shift fast with a stock shifter.

I never really liked short shifters… all the ones that I’ve tried on my friends rides seems very notchy and sometimes hard to get into gear… I’m happy with my stock shifter…

I just installed my blox short throw. I like it and it does make a lot of difference… only thing is its not as smooth as stock… not sure if its a dual bend or not but the ball was up higher and the whole thing was thicker… thumbs up for me…:burnout:

I just installed my Fidanza dual bend about 2 months ago. At first, it was hard to shift but got easier over 2 weeks. I was not hard to install and with new bushings, I can shift alot faster and somewhat smoother. It doesn’t hit my exhaust and it is easy to get into all gears. I paid $27 shipped on Ebay so for the price, it is a good deal. I really like it but I suggest to get a comfortable shift knob. I am using the Momo Combat Evo Airmetal and it is great.

yea i got the fidanza short throw with a new type-r knob, it feels excellent!, doesnt feel like im damaging the synchros, but it does hit my exhuast heat shield, so im just gonna remove it!

I had to remove mine. Here are the pics of the clearance.

b&m dual bend FTW…I believe the dual bend design shortens slightly more then the straight bend, but not by much. What could possibly be a con about them…? I’ve never had any issues with notchy shifting or synchro problems…shift like a normal person.

I’ll be modifying a 94+stock dual bend shifter to fit in the teg. It is slightly longer below the ball, and a typical stock dual bend above. So I get slightly less throw than stock. I am trying this because the short throw I have now is broken (Solo shifter) and I don’t like everything about engine wear.
To make it fit properly I need to cut off a bit of the base that holds bearings, and I think I can use the solo bearings in it (need to check this).

I have a straight B&M shifter with ES bushings and it feels absolutely wonderful. I just bent the heat shield so that it wouldn’t get in the way, and it works perfectly.

short shifts definetly seem to be about personal taste. I’ve got one on my teg and i think it makes the car really fun to drive. yeah its a little notchier but it’s no big deal. as for synchros…its not the shifters fault it scratched second gear it’s the guerilla behind it that missed the shift.

i’ve got the B&M Edge Shifter. straight shifter, no bends.

it is a little notchy, but nothing i can’t deal with. i do intend to put in a dual bend shifter though, to bring the knob a little bit closer to my driving position. i’m constantly leaning forward a bit to reach for the knob, so i’d like to have a little more comfort. i can’t really move my seat closer, as i have somewhat long legs, and going any closer will be a little uncomfortable.

I like mine because short throws make me feel like billy badass. I don’t think there’s any performance benefit. But if I’m gonna be driving, anything I can do to make me feel awesomer is a win.

I hate short shifters, i love the stock feel, and i hate when the shifter sits low, thats pretty pointless to me, i like my shifter high so i don’t move my hand much from the steering wheel.

Well, a true short throw, like the B&M products, actually reduce the throw, they don’t just make it sit lower. And it’s really not that low.

my thoughts on having a short shifter is a waste of time…if your clutch is not short( meaning like getting the omni clutch master cylinder) then its a waste of time…because yea sure you can probably shift faster(what some people claim) but your foot can only still engage the clutch so fast…besides i dont like the feel of a short shifter…it feels too hard…i personally think i can shift faster with a stock shifter…but this is my opinion…if your going to get one id get the b&m…

Yeah dude, we should all get that clutch master cylinder.

Hellz yeah, I’ve got 2 of 'em taped to my firewall, my throws are stupid short.
