Should I clearcoat JDM 1 Piece Headlights?

Well, I’m in the process of retrofitting my one pieces with projectors and installing HIDs. I’m just about done with the whole process and ready to seal up the whole headlight assembly. Before I do that, I have two questions…(1)Should I remove the glare guard from the foglamps?? (2) I’m going to renew the headlights as described in Tegtips:read: , but was wondering if I should apply a couple of layers of clear after the whole process. Thanks…Any info, comments, or questions are appreciated. I’ll post some pics of the install a little later.

imo…

  1. no

  2. yes…

They have thick plastic clear housing/cover?? Then NO!! That will actually make them start to “yellow” quicker. IMO I would possibly just purchase some of that clear “saran wrap/laminate” covering which you can easily remove and replace at will once it gets worn with stone chips, debris, Etc. That way you will be able to protect the new finish of the housing longer with minimal headache.

uhm… there’s originally a clear coat of some sort on there…

yes, baked into it profesionally with QC CONTROL…why ruin it experimenting.

many people here have re-cleared their headlights… Why sand off the original clear and leave the plastic exposed?

Yeh, I know that the headlights are plastic and that they have a clear coat from the factory…That’s exactly why I’m asking. The factory clear has gone to yellow after years of sunlight exposure. Renewing them by way of the Teg Tips would require sanding and polishing, which is fine with me, but there is no talk about reclearing them.

this clearcoat… is there a special type for plastic lenses, or will it eat into the plastic?

I don’t know if there is a special clear coat for plastic. I would think clearcoat is clearcoat and I’ve never heard of it “eating” plastics, but I would hate to find out the hard way.

So I just completed the headlights and they look remarkable. I did not remove the glareguards and I did decide to apply clearcoat. I had my doubts about the clearcoat, but just was not satisfied with the “haze” at an angle. The clearcoat added so much depth…it’s unbelievable. That final step should be added to the Tegtip. I don’t remember my headlights ever being this clean. I’ll try to post pics tomorrow.

Tag.

LOL:P I knew that was comming…It’s being done right now.

OK, here are some of the pics.

I’m still in the process of aiming the headlights…It’s probably the one thing that’s most time consuming and frustrating. The whole process took me literally a week. There is a lot of cutting and fabrication. Most time was spent assembling and disassembling the projector in the headlight to ensure a proper fit. As stated earlier, the projectors are from an Infiniti FX35 and have a high/low shutter to block the light on low beam, but hides when you need bright lights. They are nice projectors, but would recommend something a bit smaller like from a BMW, TL, TSX, or S2000. I don’t know if the G35 is smaller, but would have the HI/low function that most people loose when converting to HIDs. Anyways, any questions, comments, or concerns are welcome.

damn that shit look good…nice work

Do you happen to work for nissan/infiniti? Cause they have a recall on those headlights where they replace them and throw out the old ones.
Same with 07 g35 coupe.

Good catch… No, I don’t work for Nissan/Infiniti, but it is true that Infinity has a recall for headlights and tailights. I did not know this before I purchased my projectors, but only after when I went to the Infiniti forums to check the wiring for the Hi/Low beam solenoid. Appearantly the cutoff point is too high on headlights and the taillights are not bright enough.:read: Have you ever driven behind a FX35/45?? Those things are friggin bright!!! Anyways, I thought it was very weird of the vast number of Infiniti projectors on ebay. Well that’s the reason why…very good quality projectors for a low price.

so what’s with the wiring coming from the projectors themselves? i was under the impression you hooked up the car wiring to the ballasts, then that went to the bulbs.

being that i’m an old fart, i know i’m missing something…so what am i not understanding?

Armed Ferret, the wiring coming fromt the projectors are the wires to trigger the solenoid for the high beam. HTH.

go on…

Im not too good and explaining things however I’ll give it a shot.

When standard driving without High beams is being used,
There is a type of “Sheild” if you will within the housing

When you activate the High beam via inside the car like normal,
The wires are sent to a solonoid in which Moves the “Sheild”
and allows light from the HID to becom “Unblocked”

Not sure If I explained it in a good way.

But thats untill he explains the correct way.
